Since people are showing more interest recently in movies and as movie reviews of the same movie could vary in the degree of their objectivity, this paper seeks to answer why movie reviews may differ in their evaluation of the same work. To this end, a critical discourse analysis using Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework and Martin and White’s attitude framework is carried out to analyze two reviews of the Saudi movie Wadjda, one written in English by a western critic, and the other is Arabic written by a Saudi critic. The textual analysis of attitudinal expressions shows that the English text maintains an even distribution between the negative and positive expressions, and most of the negative expressions do not assess the aspects of the movie but rather the Saudi society. In the Arabic text, however, the negative expressions outnumber the positive ones, and they are mostly related to the movie and the director. Using Fairclough’s framework, the author explains the findings of the textual analysis of the English review and the critic’s avoidance of negative evaluation as a result of Eurocentrism and the way the western media represent Arabs and Muslims. However, the negative appraisal of several movie aspects found in the Arabic review could be seen as a result of the critic being part of the society and, thus, not distracted by the social issues.

Linguistically, the word ‘language’ has shifted into ‘discourse’ which is a social phenomenon not only to express the thoughts but also to reflect the mindset and contexts of a specific community. The purpose of this study is to examine the slogans written on Pakistani automobiles and to understand the logic behind the social and cultural affiliations of these slogans. Pakistani culture of the art of making pictures and written phrases, poetic verses and imperative sentences on vehicles is famous all over the world. The study has analysed the writings found on vehicles, and although these writings might look trivial on the automobiles, they address various social issues. The Three-Dimensional Model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Fairclough (2001) is used as a theoretical framework that explains the study at three levels: lexical, syntactic patterns, interpretations, and social practices. The discourses written on the vehicles are characterised into different categories, which are life’s mission statements, loud messages, mind baffling messages, everyday life annoyances, provoking statements, and religious looms. Twenty images and pictures have been captured from vehicles as a random sample of this study. The results reveal the mindset behind these discourses. They are used to highlight social issues which Pakistan faces, being a developing country. In short, the study discloses the strong link between the vehicles and the people using them to convey messages to the society which can bring harmony among the public. The current study is limited to only Pakistani motor vehicles.

The purposes of this research are to describe the micro, mezzo, and macro as well as the social, political and cultural situation from the linguistic aspects in Gerakan #2019GantiPresiden di Antara Ambiguitas Hukum dan Syahwat Politik text. The results show that there are linguistic aspects in the form of diction in the direct sentences that are used by Kompas.com with the theme #2019GantiPresiden. This movement is considered as a constitutional movement indicated as a rebellion because it is supported by political interests towards their current government rival. This is closely related to the background of Kompas.com as a pro-government online mass media. It is also acceptable if Kompas.com creates a positive image of the current government. The main point of information that is conveyed in the news of #2019GantiPresiden is that this movement possibly threats the government of Jokowi Widodo who will run again for the presidential election in 2019.

This article deals with the investigation of the existence of postcolonial discourse in Coogler’s Black Panther (2018). The study aims to reveal and examine the existence of social issues related to Bhabha’s notion of postcolonialism represented through visual and linguistic elements in the movie. Fairclough’s (1989,2001, 2010) Critical Discourse Analysis, Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) Reading Images, Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (2004) and Bhabha’s (1994) Postcolonialism are used to conduct this research. The result of the study shows that postcolonial discourse is proved represented in the movie. The findings imply that the post colonialism affects the characters in term of how they see and reflect themselves towards the dominance. They are also identified as possessing hybrid identity, ambivalence, and mimicry. It seems that the result of the research opposes the director’s intention to bring the theme of the movie. Theoretically, it is proved that the social irregularities representing black supremacy and exploitation of the citizen of Africa, Wakanda, is depicted in the movie. Empirically, the existence of nondemocratic social practices in black citizens is also seen in the movie.

AbstractThe purpose of this study is to analyze the discourse. And this study examined oral and written text analysis, used to exploit expansive resources. One of the goals of this article is about how to study literary development and analyze discourse. Discourse analysis is one of the new approaches or methods that attract the attention of researchers to examine the relationship between the superstructure and social issues. This is criticized for several reasons, first because political and social ideology is projected onto data and not realized through data, secondly because there is an unequal equilibrium between social theory and linguistic methods, and the third because discourse is taken from the social context and the fourth because its methodology is not systematic. Keywords: Critical Linguists (CL), Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), Discursive Practices, Educational Policies, Semiotics.

Abstract This research is linked with Twitter, as one of social media services on the Internet that are extremely popular in the world, including in Indonesia. This research is important because Twitter is effective in quickly and accurately delivering messages. In fact, everyone can act as a 'reporter' and form quick opinions through this social media. This research is aimed to investigate the emergence of the roots of hegemony based on text analysis that is linked with representation, relation, identity, and transformation of national issues that become trending topics on Twitter. Moreover, the research is to discuss the social media's discourse practice that influences media workers in producing news, and to see how it implicates the research on the study of discourse analysis. By using the Fairclough theory, especially on text analysis that is linked with representation, relation, and identity, the researcher attempts to explore how the roots of hegemony emerge in the national issues that become trending topics on Twitter. The researcher also offers a new function to complete the approach of Fairclough in text analysis on social media: transformation – which is an attempt to see the change in roles of news participants and amateur readers as 'reporters' and participate in forming opinions.
