This study aims to discuss the effectiveness of the Grammarly online application in improving academic writing through the experience of reviewing published papers. For that, we have reviewed a variety of literature and listened to the experiences of other academics published in various international journals. We chose descriptive qualitative content analysis. For example, it involves an in-depth analysis of each expert's experience with an exploratory phenomenological approach. To do this, we involve a coding analysis system, critically evaluate the content and ensure the results are valid and reliable. As for literature sources, we do with the help of the Google Doc application, Eric Publications, Google scholars, and other online literature sources. We do this considering that we did this study in a dynamic era and responded to the pandemic protocol and public restriction in Indonesia. We follow the guidelines of descriptive qualitative studies experts in academic writing and application technology. The result is that most academics say that the Grammarly online application is very suitable for use by writers because its usefulness is beneficial in tracking writing errors.

This study was qualitative content analysis that evaluated the quality of English for University Teaching (EUT), English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and English for Academic Purposes (EAP) textbooks through impressionistic and in-depth analysis.   The participants were 9 EAP teachers and 15 EAP students from three universities in Surakarta, Indonesia. Instruments to collect data were checklist and interview guide. The checklist consisted of impressionistic analysis to see (1) cover, (2) content scope, (3) learning activities, (4) book organization, and (5) layout; and the in-depth analysis, namely (1) aim and approach, (2) organization design, language and content, (3) language skills, and (4) practical consideration. Data were collected using checklist and Focus Group Discussion. Data were analyzed through summative content analysis with seven stages: transforming data into narrative text, determining unit of analysis, developing categories, coding, coding the entire text, checking consistency of coding, and drawing conclusion. Results show EUT and ESP have low quality based on the impressionistic evaluation, and fair quality of their in-depth evaluation.  Both books are register and grammar oriented.  EAP textbook is good in general, and very good in depth.  EAP presents its contents in terms of genre reading, academic speaking, academic reading, academic writing and grammar.

The research deals with figurative language, aimed to identify the types and interpret the ideas or messages implicitly or explicitly expressed with theoretical based proposed by Kennedy and Giola (2005) that figurative language is an expression of comparison that relies not on its literal meaning, but rather on its connotations. Figurative language is also commonly used in song lyrics and this is referred to as the object of the research, that is the song lyrics taken Evanescence’s album Anywhere but Home. This album consists of five songs:  Everybody’s Fool, Going under, Haunted, Taking over Me and Thoughtless. Qualitative content analysis as the use of replicable and valid method for making specific inferences from text to other states or properties of its source under Descriptive Qualitative Approach, pioneered by Krippendorff (2000) is applied here. The results show that Hyperbole, Repetition, Personification, Metaphor, Erotesis, Merism, referring to Kosasih’s category of figurative language are found in the song album with various meanings. The present research aimed to analyze adverbial anaphora resistance in students’ descriptive texts at the Department of Indonesian Language Education and Literature, Faculty of Languages and Literature, Universitas Negeri Makassar. The problem “How is adverbial anaphora (resistance) was presented in the descriptive texts written by the students? A descriptive qualitative content analysis was employed in this research. Data collection was performed through documentation of the five-semester students’ descriptive texts. The results show that adverbial anaphora resistance in the students’ descriptive texts consists of: (1) anaphora within adverbs of place ( ini “this” and di sana “there” that occupy a different position); (2) anaphora within adverbs of time (tahun “year”, pagi hari “in the morning”, and malam hari “at night”); (2) anaphora within adverbs of purpose (bagi “for” and untuk “to”); (4) anaphora within adverbs of comparison (seperti “like”); (5) anaphora within adverbs of cause (sebab “cause” and karena “because”). Adverbial anaphora is highly associated with the placement of words, the relationship between words and phrases, or interrelationship among sentences. The limited number of adverbial anaphora produced by the students originates from the students’ lack of competence in writing a text.

English Education Master Students’ Self-Regulated Learning Strategies in Academic Writing Kristian Florensio Wijaya Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta [email protected]     Abstract There is a propensity for language teachers to handicap graduate students as independent, competent and strategic academic writers. Therefore, it is easier to discover graduate students struggling intensely to produce and publish qualified academic writing products to targeted journal articles. Due to this ubiquitous fact, self-regulated learning strategies need to be entrenched potently within L2 academic writers to enable them to become more mindful, resourcefulness, autonomous, and proficient academicians who excel in their subject-specific fields. This was a small-scale qualitative study implementing qualitative content analysis to obtain a more obvious portrayal regarding some specific phenomena taken place in one particular circumstance. To fulfill this objectivity, two research instruments were utilized in this study namely the Likert-scale Questionnaire and interview protocols to maintain the robustness of the data gathering processes. 15 English Education Master Students together with 3 selected interviewees were also invited to fill out the questionnaire and participate in the interview activities. In line with the gathered data, the qualitative results revealed that the majority of English Education Master Students have transformed into more life-long and proficient academic L2 writers for they continuously showed greater resilience, efforts, commitment to accomplish various academic writing projects.    Keywords: Self-regulated learning strategies, academic writing, qualitative content analysis, academic L2 writers

The present research was a corpus-based descriptive qualitative content analysis of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, based on Peirce’s intersemiotic model. The drama was translated interlingually from English to Farsi and intersemiotically by Servati for stage performance. Regarding the first research question (Which signs (iconical, indexical, or symbolic) are more applicable to semiotic analysis of Macbeth performance?), the results of the analysis show that the intersemiotic translation of drama was not successful in transferring some iconic signs from page to stage. Iconic signs are more susceptible to inappropriate intersemiotic translation than indexical signs and symbolic signs. Considering Servati’s adaptation, it can be judged that other aspects, namely, secondness and thirdness, are more manageable when translating drama into a stage performance. This finding, in this case study, contradicts the findings of some previous studies regarding the point that intersemiotic translation is a deeply iconic dependent process. The contradictory results may be related to cultural differences and different cultural signs of the two involved languages.

The research was related to figurative language but the researchers focused on simile, aimed at identifying the dominant type of simile used based on the theory put forward by Kennedy and Giola. Simile is a comparison of one thing to another which is always listed because the words "like" or as are used. Simile is also commonly used in song lyrics and this is referred to as the object of the research, that is the song lyrics taken by Lenka’s song Everything at Once. The researchers take this song because all the lyrics are full of similes, from the beginning to the end of the song. Qualitative content analysis as the use of replicable and valid methods to make specific inferences from the text to other circumstances or properties of the source under the Descriptive Qualitative Approach, pioneered by Krippendorff  is applied here. The results show that there are two types of simile in this song and the dominant types used in this song is close simile.

For the last 30 years, the Church of Sweden, along with other institutions, has offered special confirmation courses for the church’s young Sami members. The organisers and teachers involved with these Sami confirmation courses all stress the necessity of adapting their teaching to fit Sami contexts. Their views are supported by various steering documents, but the wording of these documents leaves room for differing interpretations, which has resulted in multiple understandings of what concrete adjustments should be implemented in the teaching. The overarching aim of this article is to analyse the differing views of how to adapt the teaching in Sami confirmation courses so as to better fit the Sami contexts. In particular, I examine whether these different views can be traced to differing understandings of what contextualising Religious Education entails.Ten interviews with people involved in teaching or organising the courses were analysed, along with archival material, using qualitative content analysis and theories regarding contextual theology, religious education and indigenous education. To capture these different theoretical perspectives, I suggest the concept of contextualised religious education and three central analytical questions: (1) ‘who is the teacher?’, (2) ‘how is the teaching organised?’ and (3) ‘what is the content of the teaching?’My in-depth analysis of the interviews and archival material, the sorting of the different views voiced in this material (based on the three questions above), together with inspiration from models of contextual theology, resulted in three new categories: dialogical contextual religious education, context-driven contextual religious education and faith-driven contextual religious education.
