Nowadays regeneration of warehouse zones and former industrial areas of the city is becoming one of the most relevant strategies for cities’ sustainable development. The main purpose of the research is to identify the methods and principles of structural and spatial transformations of existing urban areas. The research formulates the need to rethink the attitude to urban planning in general, as well as reveals the warehouse zones’ («Brownfields») potential for sustainable development while their integrated use. On the example of the industrial territory in Kazan, there were developed the principles and methods of structural-density and morphological transformations, which can be used in projects for sustainable development and transformation of existing urbanized settlements. A formalized model of study area’s structural reorganization is constructed, on the basis of which the identified principles of regeneration are tested. The obtained results make it possible to formulate the basic principles underlying structural and planning transformations of warehouse zones and to create its urban planning renovation model. The developed practical methods of implementing such strategies can be applied in the further development of urbanized territories, both new and existing ones.

Organizational innovations of the integrated management system for hospitality and tourism companies is now an essential factor in the economic competitiveness of firms. The study of innovations in the service sector is still in its infancy, as the first studies did not appear until the late 1990s, and it is difficult to find a reliable theoretical basis for studying innovations in this sector. It becomes even harder to find when applied to firms working in the hospitality and tourism sectors. Tourism is currently one of the most promising industries in the world, and there is an urgent need for a better understanding of innovation in this sector. This study addresses a common question: how to explain innovations in the tourism sector. In seeking an answer to this question, the work has two objectives: 1) to discuss what innovation in services is, taking into account a study of innovation in hospitality and travel firms, along with a literature review; 2) to develop a case study for an international group on hospitality. The results support the hypotheses that the implementation of an Integrated Hotel Management System is an important innovation in the sense that it mainly promotes organizational innovation, while firms use sustainable development policies as strategies of innovation and differentiation from competition. At this time, tourism firms are to be managed in three ways: economic, social and environmental. The advantages defined by the hotel are: optimization of work processes, with an impact on productivity, sustainable development of the company, strengthening of its corporate image, creation of an organized structure, reduction of environmental impact and risks inherent in the activity, and increase in customer satisfaction. Finally, we present a number of conclusions that allow a better understanding of innovation in tourism and are aimed at expanding the theoretical debate as well as knowledge on this topic.

Geographic information systems can be defined as a intelligent tool, to which it relates techniques for the implementation of processes such as the introduction, recording, storage, handling, processing and generation of spatial data. Use of GIS in urban planning helps and guides planners for an orderly development of settlements and infrastructure facilities within and outside urban areas. Continued growth of the population in urban centers generates the need for expansion of urban space, for its planning in terms of physical and social infrastructures in the service of the community, based on the principles of sustainable development. In addition urbanization is accompanied with numerous structural transformations and functional cities, which should be evaluated in spatial context, to be managed and planned according to the principles of sustainable development. Urban planning connects directly with land use and design of the urban environment, including physical and social infrastructure in service of the urban community, constituting a challenge to global levels. Use of GIS in this field is a different approach regarding the space, its development and design, analysis and modeling of various processes occurring in it, as well as interconnections between these processes or developments in space.

The paper concerns the issue of infrastructure formation in research and technology development centers. It is established that the key point in the design and construction of such centers is providing the effective functioning of social infrastructure, which is a connecting link for the main structural elements of modern research and technology development centers. The grounds for the necessity of working out a unified pattern for designing research and technology development centers in compliance with the urban planning regulations and research and technology development priorities are given. An integrated model for working out a unified pattern of designing research and technology development centers is suggested. This model envisages creating a harmonized international standard that describes the basic principles of sustainable infrastructure formation in research and technology development centers construction. Based on the research results, the principles of sustainable infrastructure formation in research and technology development centers are set out and worded according to the goals of sustainable development. The authors also give grounds for the applicability of the principles formulated in this paper for the infrastructure assessment of research and technology development centers, both operating and under construction, which will make it possible to target the less-developed elements and draw up the plan of their improvement for further sustainable development. The authors also list emerging technologies to be developed and implemented for the efficient accomplishment of the research objectives.

The present sustainable metropolitan cities and the urban planning procedures in Libya are mainly aimed at reducing the impact on the environment due to the use of resources and improving life quality. Thus, the primary objective of this investigation is to create a model that focuses on reliable and valid urban planning of sustainable development, which highly reflects the Islamic way of live concerning the Libyan cities. The projected study model was tested experimentally using a review of 307 suitable samples, which included urban planning associated parties/industries, like the governmental institutions, academic research institutes, developer consultants, and planning and design engineers. Moreover, evaluations were done using the statistical software package Smart-PLS 2.0. The outcome shows that Libyan urban cities should comprise four major elements: social sustainability, environmental sustainability, economic sustainability, and institutional markers. The indicators for every element are studied in detail later in this investigation, which contributed significantly to gaining a better insight into the model for urban planning of sustainable development concerning the Libyan cities. The results provide useful insights for the urban planning industry in order to introduce the UPSD (Urban Planning of Sustainable Development) model, which is helpful as a strategy for Libyan organizations, urban planning contribution, and development to improve Libyan cities. Also, UPSD can be used to assess developed urban areas to analyze the quality of those areas and finally indicate the areas of enhancement.

The article discusses the practical aspect of implementation of the idea of sustainable development in the EU Cohesion Policy in the 2014-2020 programming period in Poland. The objective of the study is to determine the relations between the idea of sustainable development and instruments of its implementation, and the identification of the scope of influence of Cohesion Policy tools on sustainable development of functional urban areas (FUA). The paper presents the author’s set of sustainable development indicators (SDI) and relevant analyses of their implementation in the financial and spatial aspect in 26 FUAs. Detailed analyses covered one of the new instruments of territorial development, namely Integrated Territorial Investments (ITI). The paper provides evidence which proves that the dominant sphere in the financial and spatial support is the modernisation of transport and energy engineering infrastructure, with potentially multiple effects, as well as the development of a structurally diverse labour market. The least support is provided to the strengthening of integrated management. The tested approach is applicable in reference to other functional areas in the EU. It can contribute to the determination of the extent to which the implementation of the Cohesion Policy supports sustainable development of cities and their functional areas. The application of SDI contributed to the understanding of the process in reality.

Strategic urban planning plays a real and significant role in the development of urban areas around the world. It helps mitigate the loss of lands and especially divert urban growth away from “agriculture lands”. It provides for improved and equal urban services and utilities as well as enhances local economics, livability and sustainability. This paper explores the importance of strategic planning and its role in sustainable development in addition to the importance of its implementation process. Case studies in Egypt are presented through a questionnaire with the local government with a group of 19 cities. We find that there are many problems associated with the implementation process, which have prevented the conversion of these plans into a reality. The aim of this paper is to illustrate the concept of strategic planning and its process and to explain how Egypt is dealing with it. Secondly, this research aims to suggest a new implementation system that can solve the main implementation system’s problems in Egypt. In conclusion, the paper identifies, through statistics, the perspectives of local government staff in Egypt about the preparation and implementation of the strategic plans, including proposed solutions and the opportunity of community participation.
