Are dentists more prone to metabolic syndrome and occupational stress?

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) among dentists in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The study also explored the causes of occupational stress among the participating dentists. MATERIALS & METHODS: The participants included a conveniently selected sample of dentists (N = 126; Males = 65; Females = 61). The participants’ anthropometric measurements/blood sample analysis were carried out and they completed a self-administered questionnaire. Data analysis included demographics, gender/age wise comparison using SPSS (p <  0.05). For the diagnosis of MS, updated criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program was applied. RESULTS: Participants diagnosed with MS were 13 (10.3%), Males = 11(8.7%) and Females = 2(1.5%). Physical activity of 6 (15.8%) with MS was only 0–2 hours/week. 9 (14.5%) participants with MS declared positive family history for MS. The average systolic (117.55±11.33) and diastolic blood pressure (71.9±9.34) of the participants was found to be normal with no gender wise statistical difference. No gender wise statistical differences (p >  0.05) were observed for cholesterol, triglycerides and HDL. However, significant difference (p = 0.00) was found for the fasting glucose level (Males = 5.69±1.49; Females = 4.94±0.42). Overall mean scoring (3.00±1.11) for the stress showed that the participants fall into the average/moderate level of stress category (Males = 3.16±1.02; Females = 2.83±1.08). Almost two third (68.26%) of the participant’s responded that they were under some kind of stress. CONCLUSIONS: MS was found to be less frequent among the dentists working in the city of Riyadh. Overall, the dentists were under moderate level of occupational stress, with male dentists being more prone to work related stress.

Background: Now a days, there is increased demand and progress in the nursing profession. Along with these stress among the nurses has also increased.Objective: Purpose of the study was to assess the extent of perceived occupational stress and its association with work-related and non-work related causes among nurses.Materials and method: This Cross-sectional study was carried out among 197 nurses of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College hospital (ShSMCH), Dhaka, Bangladesh, from the period of 1st July 2015 to 30th June 2016. Sampling method was simple random sampling. Data was collected by face to face interview with the help of semi-structured questionnaire and finally all data were analyzed using SPSS software version 21.Results: It was found that 69% nurses were between the age of 21 to 39 years, 94.9% were female, 68% were married, 79.2% were Muslim, 84.3% had diploma, family income of 91.4% were equal to more than 40,000 Tk. and 95.5% used to do clinical work. Only 5.1% found to experience high stress. Statistically significant difference was found between sex, occupational stress and religion, educational status, and type of work (p < 0.05). Few nurses suffered from high stress but high level of stress were more in male, non Muslim, post graduate nurse and those who were engaged in administrative work.Conclusion: Nurse Managers should take appropriate actions to decrease stress helping their nurses to work efficiently and effectively.Delta Med Col J. Background. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease with a steadfast increase in prevalence. Due to the chronic course of the disease combining with devastating complications, this disorder could easily carry a financial burden. The early diagnosis of diabetes remains as one of the major challenges medical providers are facing, and the satisfactory screening tools or methods are still required, especially a population- or community-based tool. Methods. This is a retrospective cross-sectional study involving 15,323 subjects who underwent the annual check-up in the Department of Family Medicine of Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University from January 2017 to June 2017. With a strict data filtration, 10,436 records from the eligible participants were utilized to develop a prediction model using the J48 decision tree algorithm. Nine variables, including age, gender, body mass index (BMI), hypertension, history of cardiovascular disease or stroke, family history of diabetes, physical activity, work-related stress, and salty food preference, were considered. Results. The accuracy, precision, recall, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) value for identifying potential diabetes were 94.2%, 94.0%, 94.2%, and 94.8%, respectively. The structure of the decision tree shows that age is the most significant feature. The decision tree demonstrated that among those participants with age≤49, 5497 participants (97%) of the individuals were identified as nondiabetic, while age>49, 771 participants (50%) of the individuals were identified as nondiabetic. In the subgroup where people were 34<age≤49 and BMI≥25, when with positive family history of diabetes, 89 (92%) out of 97 individuals were identified as diabetic and, when without family history of diabetes, 576 (58%) of the individuals were identified as nondiabetic. Work-related stress was identified as being associated with diabetes. In individuals with 34<age≤49 and BMI≥25 and without family history of diabetes, 22 (51%) of the individuals with high work-related stress were identified as nondiabetic while 349 (88%) of the individuals with low or moderate work-related stress were identified as not having diabetes. Conclusions. We proposed a classifier based on a decision tree which used nine features of patients which are easily obtained and noninvasive as predictor variables to identify potential incidents of diabetes. The classifier indicates that a decision tree analysis can be successfully applied to screen diabetes, which will support clinical practitioners for rapid diabetes identification. The model provides a means to target the prevention of diabetes which could reduce the burden on the health system through effective case management.

This study determined the impact and influence of published articles on the field of occupational stress. A transdisciplinary approach was used to identify the 50 work-related stress articles with the most lifetime citations and the 50 work-related stress articles with the highest annual citation rates. Studies were categorized based on their primary focus: (a) etiology, (b) predictor of outcome for which occupational stress is the outcome or predictor of outcome for which occupational stress is an independent variable, (c) management/intervention, (d) theory/model/framework, or (e) methodologies. The majority of studies with the highest number of lifetime citations as well as the highest annual citation rates used stress as a predictor or outcome of another factor. The proportion of studies that were categorized by etiology, intervention/management, theory/model/framework, or methodologies was relatively low for both lifetime and annual citations.

This study evaluated the effects of locus of control, occupational stress, and psychological symptom distress on reported job satisfaction in a sample of 34 practicing nurses. As predicted, greater work-related stress and higher psychological symptom distress were significantly negatively correlated with job satisfaction. External locus of control was also negatively associated with job satisfaction.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study is to identify the factors predicting psychiatric nurses&rsquo; decision to use physical restraint in a clinical psychiatric setting in the Province of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A descriptive explanatory design was used. 110 nurses working in a psychiatric hospital in Jeddah city were recruited during the period 27th April to 29th June 2017. The outcome was assessed on the following scales: level of knowledge, occupational stress, working environment, nurses&rsquo; attitude toward use of physical restraint and nurses&rsquo; practice toward use of physical restraint. RESULTS: The study participants had sufficient knowledge about the use of physical restraint, experienced high levels of occupational stress, suffered an unproductive working environment and accepted attitudes and practice toward physical restraint. In addition, these variables significantly predicted the nurses&rsquo; use of physical restraint. CONCLUSION: The findings revealed that the level of knowledge and occupational stress scales, the working environment, and nurses&rsquo; attitude and practice toward the use of physical restraint significantly predicted the nurses&rsquo; use of physical restraint. RECOMMENDATIONS: The study recommends the establishment of educational and awareness programmes for nurses to better understand the concept of restraining a patient and the consideration of alternative measures for controlling agitated and violent patients. It also recommends that providing adequate staffing and other resources, maintaining a therapeutic ward environment, and decreasing work-related stress could influence psychiatric nurses&rsquo; decisions to use physical restraint on their patients.

Abstract Prevalence of shift work and occupational stress is one of the highest in nursing compared to other sectors. For years Bulgaria is facing nurses’ shortage, which contributes to their long working hours. The aim of the study was to follow the working time arrangements, stressors and health symptoms in hospital nurses in Sofia. Methods: The study is cross-sectional and comprised 1292 female nurses of average age 50.0 ± 10.2 years from 19 hospitals in Sofia. The anonymous questionnaire was filled, including demographic information, working hours and shift system, with special attention to night work and long working hours, stress and health symptoms. Statistical analysis was carried using SPSS. Results: The shift work, night work, including 5 and more night shifts per month and the extended shifts were common among the studied nurses with the greatest deal of the emergency and intensive care unit nurses, followed by department nurses. The high rates of overtime and second job contributed to long working hours of 51-60 hours per week in 16.9 % of the nurses and > 61 hours in 11.1 %. About 90 % of the nurses felt under strain and experienced emotional dissonance while working with patients. Work-related stress, night work and long working hours were related to self-rated emotional and physical exhaustion and poor health. Discussion: The work-related stress, night work and the long working hours raise health concerns for occupational health of hospital nurses. Urgent preventive measures are needed to control stress and reduce working hours and night work.

<em>This study investigated the health implications of work-related stress among academic staff of tertiary institutions in Katsina State, Nigeria. This research adopts a descriptive survey design. The population of this study is 2,036 academic staff from thirteen institutions. A sample of 328 academic staff was drawn, using proportionate stratified sampling technique. A self-developed questionnaire (HIWRS-Q) with reliability of 0.75 was used. Chi-square and t-test were used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings of this study revealed that 105 (32%) of the respondents do not experienced health implications of work-related stress while, 223 (68%) of the respondents experienced health implications of work-related stress. Also, there is significant health implication of work-related stress among academic staff (P=0.001&lt;0.05). There is significant difference in the health implication of work-related stress among academic staff based on institutional ownership (P=0.023&lt;0.05). There is no significant difference in the work-related stress between male and female teaching staff (P=0.650&gt;0.05). It is recommended among others that the State government should improve on the working environment and conditions of academic staff to be health-friendly, health enhancing conditions for achieving academic excellence, and sustainable productivity in the State.</em>

INTRODUCTION: Burnout is a state of mental and physical exhaustion which is developed under high levels of work-related stress. Burnout during residency training has gained significant attention since it leaves negative impacts on job performance and patient care. This study aimed at investigating the rate of burnout among residents in different medical fields.METHOD: A descriptive cross sectional study was carried out in 170 medical residents in Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences, 2012. Data was collected using a demographic questionnaire and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI).RESULTS: Overall 52% of residents met burnout criteria ranging from 33% to 73% in different fields. There was a significant difference between specialties regarding emotional exhaustion subscale. (p=0.022). There was also a significant relationship between age and emotional exhaustion, in fact younger residents reported higher emotional exhaustion. (p=0.004)CONCLUSIONS: There was a considerable degree of burnout among residents and we found a relationship between educational field and emotional exhaustion. The highest degree of burnout was observed in Gynecology residents, and highest degree of emotional exhaustion was reported between younger residents.

Background: Occupational stress is one of the key factors in reducing staff productivity in any organization with physical and psychological impacts  on employees. Nursing is among the most stressful professions. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the extent of perceived level occupational stress and its association with work-related and non-work related variables as causes of stress and work ability among nurses in a Public Medical College Hospital. Methods:  A  cross  sectional study  was  done  among  nurses  in  Shaheed  Suhrawardy  Medical  College Hospital (ShSMCH) dmi.ng July 2015-June  2016 among 197 nurses, selected through a simple random sampling.  Face  to  face  interview   was conducted,  using  a  pretested  semi-structured   questionnaire. Occupational stress and work ability were measured using Expanded Nurses Stress Scale Questionnaire (ENSS) and WorkAbility Index Questionnaire (WAIQ). Appropriate statistical analysis was performed to see the level of significance. Results: Majority  (69.0%) of the study  population were between the age of 21 to 39 years,  94.gG/o were female, 68.0% were married, 79.2% were Muslim, 84.3% had diploma, 91.4% fumily income were equal or more than   Tk 40,000,  95.5%   did    clinical   work.  Some   25.0%  worked  in  medicine ward,  22.8% worked at surgery ward and 90.9% worked more or less than 50 hours per week.  Only 5.1% found to be high stress and 94.6% low stress. Significant difference was found between female and male, occupational stress and religion, educational status, type of work, occupational stress and work ability (p<.0.05). Conclusion: Severe occupational stress is associated with reduced work ability. So, it is recommended to decrease occupational  stress to increase work ability, although identification of sources of occupational stress seems necessary in order to adopt appropriate stress management strategies.
