BACKGROUND: Ragi (Eleusine Coracana) is a major food crop for the tribal population of India. OBJECTIVE: This study emphasizes the need to consider ergonomics aspects in the design and development of a pedal operated ragi thresher (PORT) for tribal people, and assesses the drudgery as well as ergonomic evaluation of a developed thresher against the conventional practice. METHODS: Thirty subjects (male = 15 and female = 15) from the tribal region were evaluated ergonomically. The physiological responses of the subjects were studied and their performance was compared. RESULTS: The results revealed that the working heart rate, oxygen consumption rate and overall discomfort rating were significantly higher in case of traditional threshing as compared to those in case of PORT. Postural analysis identified the traditional method as the most fatigue one as the person has to lift the hand above shoulder level repeatedly and has to sit in a squatting posture for long period. CONCLUSION: The drudgery and occupational hazards to public health involved in the traditional method of threshing was reduced by using the pedal operated ragi thresher. Furthermore, the traditional method involved continuous stressed actions across the entire body, whereas the PORT involved only the lower limbs.

Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WRMSD) is one of the most common problems that affect productivity in industrial processes. This chapter presents the ergonomic evaluation of the main tasks in a Constant Velocity (CV) Joint assembly process. Tasks selected and evaluated using ergonomic methods were the transport of manufacturing parts on carts, parts supply at the workstation, materials handling within the workstation, and loading of the finished product on pallets. The ergonomic evaluation was performed by applying both Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) method, and Rodgers' Biomechanical analysis. The analysis showed the existence of very high and high risk levels. Body regions most affected were elbow, shoulder, trunk, hip, legs, arm, and wrist. Ultimately, this research highlights the urgent need to perform corrective actions and further assessment for the CV Joint assembly process tasks studied.

This paper presents a study in batik industry with the objective of determining any musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among canting batik workers in Kuala Terengganu. The MSDs symptoms were identified through questionnaires modified from a Standardized Nordic Questionnaire (SNQ) and from observational techniques by using a postural analysis tool, Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) and Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA). The results of questionnaires revealed that MSDs occurred at a high rate which the highest rates of MSDs prevalence were reported in shoulders (64.5%). By assessing postural using the REBA software, the score 4 placed it in medium risk level. However, there are other factors contribute to the existence of MSD such as prolong standing, repetitive movement and poor workstation design. These parameters are not taken into account in the RULA and REBA analysis. Thus, designing an ergonomic workstation may prevent awkward postures to provide a maximum comfort to the batik workers and consequently enhance the productivity. Work posture analysis plays an important role in providing safe and productive workplace, through minimizing musculoskeletal symptoms or disorders. The postural analysis can be conducted through observation, direct, and self-report method. Each has their advantages and disadvantages. Purpose of this study is to compare obervation and self-report analysis in the context of degre of agreenes. One rater observes and gives rating to the fifteeen work postures in an automotive service company using Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) and Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA). In addition, six workers in the automotive service company also fill out the Nordic questionnaire as a self-report of musculoskeletal symptoms or disorders. Descriptive analysis is conducted to compare the musculoskeletal symptoms using both observer and self-report analysis. Results show that RULA is slighlty better than REBA in accordance to the Nordic questionnaire’ result. Implications of the result is discussed.

Agriculture is one of the most crucial and hazardous sectors in both the developing and the developed countries. The agriculture area has a various problem related to safety and health, calling an urgent research to solve the problem. The purpose of this study is to apply ergonomics checkpoint in agriculture (developed by ILO) in Indonesian as well as to observe the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms among Indonesian farmers.251 Indonesian farmers participate voluntarily in this study. “Ergonomic checkpoint in agriculture” as a tool to reduce agriculture-related accident and increase productivity is assessed by student researcher. Prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms (MSS) is assessed using Nordic body map that is filling out by participants. Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA), Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA), and postural analysis using 3 dimension Static Prediction Program (3D SSPP) are applied to observe the risk activities of Indonesian farmers including the manual hoe for land clearing, grass cutting for land clearing, planting the rice, manual plow, giving fertilizer, harvesting, threshing, cleaning the rice from the straw, and sun-drying of rice. According to ergonomics checkpoints, material handling and storage are the worst in Indonesian agriculture, coupled with minimum safety information, toilet and washing facilities, and first aid. The high-risk activities are manual hoe for land clearing, manual plow, grass cutting for land clearing and threshing. The reported MSS mainly found in the shoulder and lower back.In conclusion, Indonesian agriculture is in a poor ergonomics condition and is associated with high musculoskeletal symptoms. The postural analysis also reveals a high risk of farmer activities.

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to determine the prevalence rate of musculoskeletal disorders and evaluate the body position in routine tasks among orthotists and prosthetists. Methods: Forty orthotists and prosthetists were included. The scores of the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire and the Rapid Entire Body Assessment were used to determine the prevalence rate of musculoskeletal disorders and analyze the work position of orthotists and prosthetists, respectively. An examiner evaluated 10 working postures that were dominantly used every day, in each orthotist and prosthetist. Results: Among the orthotists, 55.6% of men and 47% of women suffered from pain in the trunk, neck, and lower limbs. Nearly similar results were seen in the upper limbs (74.1% men and 45.5% women). Such high prevalence rates were not seen in prosthetists. The analysis of the Rapid Entire Body Assessment scores based on the working task and gender of the orthotist and prosthetist showed that more than 60% of the workers achieved a score of 4 to 7 approximately in half of the tasks. It shows the medium risk of musculoskeletal disorders, thus, corrective action is necessary. Conclusion: Based on the findings, musculoskeletal disorders are highly prevalent among orthotists and prosthetists, especially in the orthotist workers. To reduce these disorders, it is recommended to add ergonomic topics and training courses for working with devices to increase the knowledge of specialists and apply and select practical tools based on the principles of ergonomics.

Ergonomics integrates knowledge from the human sciences to match jobs, systems, products, and environments to the physical and mental abilities and limitations of people. Most of the injuries, stresses and strains in construction industry occur due to over-exertion and repetitive work actions. Postural analysis can be a powerful technique for assessing work activities. Use of ergonomic principles reduces fatigue experienced by the human body in various tasks. Ergonomics deals with the study of internal and external stresses acting on the human body. The aim of this study is to assess the level of ergonomics in various tasks in the construction industry .The study also aims to find the level of musculoskeletal disorders in workers and suggest corrective measures for every task having high risk factor. The study is conducted by using the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) tool of Ergofellow software, to assess the posture of workers in various construction tasks. Fatigue analysis is done by this method, which provides a scoring system for muscle activity caused by static, dynamic, rapid changing or unstable postures. Background: Improper posture is recognized as one of the risk factors in musculoskeletal disorders. So, operational postures assessment is required to correct undesirable postures and reduce musculoskeletal disorders. This study was conducted to specify the risk level of working postures utilizing REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment) and NERPA (Novel Ergonomic Postural Assessment) method and determining its relationship with the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders in the operational occupations of Abadan Oil Refining Company. Methods: The current study was a cross-sectional and descriptive-analytical study. Using the Cochran formula, 315 of the operational employees of the Abadan Oil Refining Company were studied. Data were gathered by the methods of REBA and NERPA and analyzed using SPSS 20 and statistical tests. The statistical test of the Pearson correlation coefficient was applied to determine the correlation between the results of REBA and NERPA methods. The confidence level of 95% was taken into consideration. Results: Based on the results obtained from REBA method, the highest frequency percentage in the risk level of postural analysis was attributed to 206 subjects (65.4%) in the medium level, 88 subjects (27.9%) in the low level, and 20 subjects (6.3%) in the high level. Regarding the results obtained from NERPA method, the highest frequency percentage in the risk level of postural analysis was attributed to 158 subjects (50.2%) in the high level, 134 subjects (42.5%) in the medium level and 23 subjects (7.3%) were in the very high level. The statistical test results revealed that a statistically significant relationship was observed between the mean score of REBA and NERPA (P<0.001). Conclusion: This study's results declared that the NERPA method, by regarding the domain and angles of motion more than the REBA posture assessment, investigated the musculoskeletal health and was more worker-oriented.
