Relevance. Biological features (morphometric indicators, viability and germinating power) of Poterium polygamum seeds found in natural communites of the Stavropol Territory have been studied. The conservation of wild-growing plant species in the natural population and the rational use of their potential are relevant.Methods. Years of study — 2013–2021. The subject of the study is Poterium polygamum seeds. Seeds were collected in 2013. Studies were carried out according to the methods of studying seed material. Freshly harvested seeds and seeds of different shelf life were germinated in petri dishes at a temperature of 18–20 °C.Results. The collected seeds of Poterium polygamum are quite large. The length of the seeds is 4–5 mm, the width is about 2.5 mm. The mass of 1000 pieces of seeds on average was 10.59 grams. Complete absence of viability of freshly harvested Poterium polygamum seeds was revealed. After three months, seed viability was 97%. This is a shallow physiological rest associated with the post-harvest maturation period. During the storage of seeds, their high germination was established — from 70 to 100%. The duration of seed storage is 8 years. The largest number of germinated seeds and their germinating power were noted in the third year of their storage (100%). Seeds germinated on the third or fourth day. The differences between the viability of seeds and their germinating power are not great. In the eighth year of storage of Poterium polygamum seeds, viability and germinating power were slightly reduced. The storage period of seeds, in which they retain the ability to germinate and the germinating power, is long. It has been found that the wild species Poterium polygamum belongs to plants with a high (70 to 100%) viability. This species is regularly resumed in the natural population. The revealed biological features of Poterium polygamum seeds can become the scientific basis during the reconstruction of degraded natural grass stand and in selection work.

Gliricidia sepium is a drought-tolerant species, easily multiplied by seeds, and has been exploited by farmers as a source of forage in the semi-arid region of northeast Brazil. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of seed storage on the mobilization of reserves during imbibition of "Gliricidia" seeds. Freshly-harvested seeds were packed in kraft paper bags and stored for three and six months in the laboratory under ambient conditions (25 º C ± 3 T and 75% ± 3 RH). Cotyledons were isolated from imbibed seeds and macerated for the extraction and quantification of total soluble sugars, reducing sugars, sucrose and starch, as well as of proteins, amino acids and for amylase activity. Storage under these conditions resulted in an increase in seed water content although germination remained at relatively high levels (86%). Seed macromolecule levels showed significant variation with the storage period and imbibition and these variations were associated with a loss in seed viability due to inadequate storage conditions.

An important center in which genetic research started and was carried out in Brazil during the 20th century was situated at the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Linguistics of the University of São Paulo, led by André Dreyfus (1897–1952). Beginning in 1943, the Ukrainian geneticist Theodosius Dobzhansky (1900–1975) visited Dreyfus’s group four times. This paper evaluates the impact of Dobzhansky’s visits on the studies of genetics and evolution developed by the members of Dreyfus’s group during the 1940s and the 1950s. The study leads to the conclusion that Dobzhansky’s visits had an impact, not only in quantitative terms (the number of individual and joint publications), but also in qualitative terms. However, we also detect a decrease in the number of individual and joint publications related to the subject of the project during certain periods. The adoption of new experimental organisms by some members of the group; the involvement with subjects not related to the initial project, such as botany; Dobzhansky’s and his wife’s health problems during the third visit; and scientific disagreements between Dobzhansky and Brazilian researchers may have contributed to the decrease in publications.

<p>Soybean seed viability declines during seed storage. Soybean seed deteriorates rapidly, affected by its high protein content and often high humidity in the tropical environment. This research was aimed to develop dynamic model of soybean seed viability in an open storage. The study was conducted in three stages, namely: 1) desk study, 2) seed storage experiment, 3) development of seed storage model, simulation and verification of the model. The second stage of the experiment consisted of soybean seed storing and germination testing using completely randomized design. Treatments were three initial moisture content (7-8%, 9-10% and 11-12%) and four varieties of soybean (Anjasmoro, Wilis, Detam-1 and Detam-2). The results showed that the seed behaviour during storage period were affected by initial seed moisture content, initial viability, varieties and environmental condition. Therefore, seed moisture content, initial viability and varieties may be used as input model. Moisture content, integreting seed respiration, electric conductivity and seed storability vigor (VDSDB) were as model output. Simulation of Seed Storability Vigor Prediction Model with Model Construction Layer-Stella (MCLS) using relative humidity (RH), temperature, seed permeability, initial moisture content and initial viability as input model could logically predict the seed moisture content and seed storability vigor (VDSDB).</p>

The main problem of cocoa seed storage is moisture content of the seeds because cocoa seeds will germinate if cocoa seeds moisture content is high. The objective of this research is to maintain the cocoa seeds viability in storage using acrylic acid sodium acrylate polymer (AASAP). The function of AASAP is to absorb humidity in storage due to their ability to retain water and to prevent water loss. The experiment was conducted in a laboratory of Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute and in Kaliwining Experimental Garden. This experiment was arranged by factorial randomized complete design, in wich AASAP dosages 0%; 0.1% (0.1 g/100 seeds); 0.2% (0.2 g/100 seeds), 0.3% (0.3 g/100 seeds), 0,4% (0,4g/100 seeds), combined with seeds storage period 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks. The experiment used 3 replications and each repli cation used 100 seeds. Parameter of observation consisted of percentage of seeds germinated in storage, percentage of seeds infected by fungi in storage, seeds moisture content, percentage of seeds germination after storage, and early growth of cocoa seedlings. The results of the experiment showed that AASAP application with some dosages cocoa seeds storage cause to germinate in storage during 2 weeks. AASAP application with some dosages in cocoa seeds storage for 2 weeks would not result in infection by fungi and did not significantly affect seed germination after storage for 1, 2 and 4 weeks, and percentage of germination of cocoa seed after storage for 3 weeks decreased with increase dosage of AASAP. Higher dosage of AASAP would reduce early growth of cocoa seedling. Key words : Theobroma cacao, seed, acrylic acid sodium acrylate, seed storage, viabilty.

ABSTRACT Physalis peruviana belongs to Solanaceae family and has a high nutritional and nutraceutical potential. The production is intended for fruit consumption and the propagation is mainly by seeds. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of priming on the kinetics of germination of P. peruviana seeds stored at different temperatures. The seeds were stored at 5 and 25 °C in a chamber saturated with zinc chloride solution and in liquid nitrogen (-196 °C). Every 4 months, the seeds were removed from storage for evaluation of germination and moisture content in the laboratory and emergence and development of seedlings in greenhouse. During the last evaluation at 16 months, the seeds under the same conditions were subjected to salt stress. The moisture content varied during the storage period, but was always higher for seeds kept at -196 ºC. These seeds kept high germination percentage in water until 16 months, regardless of the tested temperature; however, in salt solution the germination percentage was significantly reduced.

The work presents the evaluation results of the viability of oat and barley collection varieties during storage in the laboratory conditions at the temperature of 20-25o C. Seed storage covered the period of 2006-2017. The research included 24 varieties of barley and 29 varieties of chaffy oats of domestic and foreign breeding collection. The seeds were stored in different packaging materials such as standard paper package; glass bottles of 0.25 liter and plastic bottles of 0.5 liter. The initial seed moisture content was 8.5-9.0 per cent. The varieties were divided into groups taking into account the initial laboratory seed germinating ability. For oats the fi rst group included 10 varieties with initial germination of 96-99%; the second group included 12 varieties with initial germination of 91-95%; the third group included 7 varieties with initial germination of 86-90%. For barley the fi rst group consisted of 5 varieties with initial germination of 91-99%; the second group consisted of 10 varieties with initial germination of 81-90%; the third group consisted of 9 varieties with initial germination of 71-80%. Determination of seed quality was carried out in 7 and 11 years’ time. The initial moisture content of seeds remained without signifi cant changes in all packaging types during the storage period of 11 years. It was also noted that germination of oat and barley seeds during 7 years of storage did not differ in any type of package. The average value in all three groups of oats was 93.2%. After 11 years of storage, germination of oat differed a little, depending on the type of package. In a paper bag it was 80.4%; in a glass bottle – 88.2%; in a plastic bottle – 85.1%. The average initial germination of three groups of barley in 7 years’ time of storage was 84.7%. After 11 years of storage, germination of barley was 53.2% in a paper bag; 63.3% in a glass bottle; 61.8% in a plastic bottle It was revealed that oat and barley seed germination in 7 years’ time did not differ in any type of package. After 11 years, germination of oats was 5.8% higher, and germination of barley was 8.6% higher in a sealed plastic bottle than in a standard paper bag. Differences in seed germinating ability between the glass and plastic bottles were not observed.

The caper (Capparis spinosa L.) is a perennial plant characteristic of the Mediterranean region that presents difficulties in its propagation, both vegetatively and by seeds. The main aim of this study is to provide collection guidelines to achieve a viable caper commercial propagation, for which three experiments were undertaken to determine the viability and germination in different seed lots. In the first experiment, commercial and own produced seeds (collected with the same criteria as commercial seeds) were analysed; the commercial seeds presented the lowest viability and germination. The second experiment analysed the effect of the fruit (from which the seeds were extracted) at its maturation stage, obtaining the lowest seed viability and germination in the seeds extracted from the dry fruits. In the third experiment, seed viability and germination were analysed immediately after collection, following a short drying period (3 d), and after six storage months. Viability and germination decreased with seed storage. Overall, it can be stated that caper seeds are sensitive to desiccation; consequently, a general rule of thumb is to collect the fruits once a week, to extract the seeds, and to plant them immediately for germination.

Abstract. Seed storage is one of the efforts to maintain seed quality until the seed is ready to be planted. Some factors that influence seed quality after the storage period are seed storage pest attack, packaging type and seed charac-teristics of each cultivar. The objectives of the experiment was to determine the combination of dosage of clove oil, packaging type and mung bean cultivar. This research consisted of two series of experiments: to study the effectiveness of a combination of clove oil dosage with cultivars and tested combinations of packaging types with two mung bean cultivars. The first experiment was conducted in January - April and the second in April - June 2017 respectively. The first experiment was to obtain the effect of a combination of clove oil dosages (0,0 ml kg-1, 0,5 ml kg-1, 1,0 ml kg-1, 1,5 ml kg-1 and 2,0 ml kg-1) with two mungbean cultivars (Vima-1 and Vima-2). Furthermore, the second experiment was to examine the types of packaging (jute bag, aluminum foil, paper bag, plastic bag and glass bottle) with cultivar type (Vima-1 and Vima-2) .The quality of the seeds was tested three and six months storage respectively. The first experi-mental results showed that clove oil treatment had no significant effect on the population of Callosobrochus sp after three months storage, percentage of broken seeds, weight of 100 grains and germination capacity. In general, Vima-3 cultivars that combined with dosages of clove oil  gave better quality than  of Vima-1 cultivars. The second experimental results showed that the paper bag packaging type and the jute bag are not able to maintain the seed viability and vigor more than  ≥ 80% of the standard quality. Aluminum foil, plastic seals, and glass bottles are able to maintained the seed quality of both cultivars after a six-month storage period.Keywords: clove oil, types of packaging, Mung bean cultivars, storage Sari. Penyimpanan benih merupakan salah satu upaya menjaga mutu benih sampai benih siap ditanam. Faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi mutu benih setelah periode simpan, antara lain serangan hama gudang, jenis kemasan dan karakteristik benih tiap kultivar. Tujuan penelitian adalah menentukan kombinasi dosis minyak cengkeh, jenis kemasan yang  paling baik  mempertahankan kualitas benih  kacang hijau.Penelitian  terdiri dari dua seri percobaan, yaitu mengkaji keefektifan kombinasi dosis minyak cengkeh dengan dua kultivar kacang hijau serta mengkaji kombinasi jenis kemasan dengan kultivar kacang hijau. Masing-masing dilaksanakan pada bulan Januari – April serta April – Juni 2017. Percobaan pertama mengkaji pengaruh kombinasi antara dosis minyak cengkeh ( 0,0 ml kg-1, 0,5 ml kg-1, 1,0 ml k-1, 1,5 ml kg-1 dan 2,0 ml kg-1) dengan kultivar ( Vima-1 dan Vima-2). Selanjutnya percobaan ke dua adalah untuk mengkaji  jenis kemasan (kantong terigu, aluminium foil, kantong kertas, kantong plastik dan botol kaca) dengan jenis kultivar (Vima-1 dan Vima-2). Mutu benih  diuji setelah periode simpan masing-masing tiga bulan dan enam bulan. Hasil percobaan pertama menun-jukkan bahwa pemberian minyak cengkeh tidak berpengaruh nyata terhadap populasi Calloso-brochus sp pada penyimpanan benih tiga bulan berkisar antara 10,00 – 25,67 ekor, persentase benih rusak, bobot 100 butir dan daya berkecambah. Secara umum kultivar Vima-2 yang dikombinasikan dengan dosis minyak cengkeh mutunya lebih baik diban-dingkan benih kultivar Vima-1.Hasil percobaan kedua menununjukkan bahwa jenis kemasan amplop kertas dan karung terigu tidak mampu mempertahankan daya berkecambah dan vigor  kedua kultivar ≥ 80 % dari standar. Kemasan aluminum foil, kantong plastik dan botol kaca mampu mempertahankan mutu benih kedua kultivar setelah periode simpan enam bulan.Kata kunci : Minyak cengkeh, jenis kemasan, kultivar kacang hijau, penyimpanan

ABSTRACT<br /><br />Physiological and biochemical changes in seeds indicates levels of viability and vigor during deterioration. The aims of the research were to study the patterns of biochemical changes in soybean seeds and its relationship to seed vigor during storage under controlled conditions. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design using two varieties as a factor which was nested into storage period and replicated four times. Two varieties were Gepak Kuning and Mallika, stored in controlled condition at temperature of 19-22 °C and 64-67% of relative humidity for six months. The seeds were evaluated for protein, peroxide value, electrical conductivity and seed viability. The exponential regression analysis was used to determine the patterns of biochemical changes of each soybean varieties during the storage period. The results showed that the biochemical behaviour of soybean seeds stored under controlled conditions for 24 weeks following the exponential equation of y = a + b expcx, which a, b, and c were constants that has different value for each variety. Electrical conductivity and peroxide value could be used as indicators of seed vigor during storage under controlled conditions for 24 weeks. Seed storage under controlled conditions are to maintain seed vigor &gt;80% up to 12 weeks for Mallika and 24 weeks for Gepak Kuning with low oxidative process and less membrane damages.<br /><br />Keywords:deterioration, storability, vigor<br /><br />

Tests of seed germination, seed dormancy and seedling growth were performed on 0-, 6-, 20- and 30-months-old seed lots of Festulolium in comparison with Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) and meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis). Tests were performed on seeds harvested in 2 different years (2014 and 2015) resulting in no major difference between the years. Seed storage affected seed viability and dormancy and seedling growth in all 3 grasses. The maximum germination of Festulolium seeds was achieved 6 months after harvest (95% normal seedlings); germination decreased significantly thereafter. While maximum germination of L. multiflorum and F. pratensis seeds was also achieved following storage for 6 months, these germination rates (93 and 90%, respectively) were retained until at least 20 months in storage. After storage for 30 months, seed germination of Festulolium, L. multiflorum and F. pratensis had declined to 72, 79 and 83%, respectively. High germination in all species was associated with higher rates of seedling growth. In an artificial seed ageing test, a temperature of 41 °C (during 48 and 72 hours) was found to effectively rank seed lots for germination performance in all 3 grasses. This test seems to have application for use in the seed trade to identify seed lots which could deteriorate more rapidly in storage. Further studies are needed to verify this hypothesis.
