Women, nature, ghost, and taboo are the main discourses related to magical realism in “Burak Siluman”, a novel by Moh. Ambri. In Burak Siluman, women (the main sign) were connected to the discourse of nature, ghost, and taboo. In it, women represent the suppressed desires of the lower class for wealth, position, honor wrapped in narratives of fascination, search, wandering, misfortune, and a curse. Discourses on the supernatural, half-ghost, and taboo legends in the novel are important traditional realities that are studied and seen by the workings of the concepts of magical realism in the colonial period of the Dutch East Indies. The main problem is: how does the concept of magical realism affect the construction of the world (physical and supernatural), especially related to ghost and taboo narratives in “Burak Siluman”. Thus, the main objective of this research is the interaction of the influence of magical realism on narratives construction related to women, nature, ghost, and taboo. To resolve the issue, the concept of contemporary magical realism is used from a postcolonial perspective. The results of this study is the placement of the "between" space (magic in rational) which is represented in the wandering figure is the core idea of ​​magical realism in “Burak Siluman”.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the issue of intertextuality in the novel Alfirdaws Alyabab (The Waste Paradise) by the female Saudi novelist and short story writer Laila al-Juhani. Intertextuality is a rhetoric and literary technique defined as a textual reference deliberate or subtle to some other texts with a view of drawing more significance to the core text; and hence it is employed by an author to communicate and discuss ideas in a critical style. The narrative structure of Alfirdaws Alyabab (The Waste Paradise) showcases references of religious, literary, historical, and folkloric intertextuality. In analyzing these references, the study follows the intertextual approach. In her novel The Waste Paradise, Laila al-Juhani portrays the suffering of Saudi women who are less tormented by social marginalization than by an inner conflict between openness to Western culture and conformity to cultural heritage. Intertextuality relates to words, texts, or discourses among each other. Moreover, the intertextual relations are subject to reader’s response to the text. The relation of one text with other texts or contexts never reduces the prestige of writing. Therefore, this study, does not diminish the status of the writer or the text; rather, it is in itself a kind of literary creativity. Finally, this paper aims to introduce Saudi writers in general and the female writers in particular to the world literature.

Borneo, the largest of the Sunda Islands, was already divided during the colonial period. Its southern part belonged to the Dutch East Indies. To the north, there were the territories of North Kalimantan, part of the British Federation of Malaya. The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ahmed Sukarno, supported anti-colonial movements around the world. Moreover, in 1962, Indonesia launched a military operation that attached West Irian, a Dutch overseas territory in the eastern tip of New Guinea. This operation gained international support.When Great Britain revised its Far East policy in the late 1950s, London gave independence to the Federation of Malaya, known as Malaysia since that time. From then on, the country was part of the Commonwealth of Nations. President Sukarno, remembering the success of the 1962 operation, considered newly established Malaysia to be only a new incarnation of English colonial politics. In April 1963, Jakarta began invading northern Borneo to annex these lands to Indonesia. The invasion met with strong resistance from the Commonwealth of Nations. After three years of struggle, the territorial status quo from before the conflict was re-established. The invasion and its high costs shook President Sukarno’s position. As a result, he was overthrown by General Suharto and the previously pursued policy of supporting anti-colonialism ended, although Indonesia remained a member of the Non-Aligned Movement, one of whose spiritual fathers was Ahmed Sukarno.

With thirty-nine original chapters from internationally prominent scholars, The Oxford Handbook of Virginia Woolf is designed for post-secondary students, scholars, and common readers. <p>In Doris Lessing’s fictions, the effects of the world outside on the female self-transcendence are invariably lost, and instead the journey in the world within is notably emphasized. Similarly in <em>The Golden Notebook</em> the didactic bend of the female enlightenment is firmly entrenched to the world within where personal harmonies parallel the mystical patterns of self-development. Moreover, the detailed exploration of the novel foregrounds the female characters’ hard effort to end their suffering which is the core of Buddhist teachings. Hence, while Lessing is not specifically attempting to portray Buddhist principles in her novel, her vision captures the universal nature of humankind’s attempts to overcome suffering which is the most emphasized concept in Buddhism. Accordingly, the purpose of this paper is to use Buddhist philosophical thoughts, particularly the founding of the pioneer of Mahayana Buddhism, Nagarjuna, in his book <em>Mulamadhyamakakarika </em>to look more closely at the root of women’s suffering and their prescription to overcome it. The methodology appropriated entails depiction of clinging as the root of female suffering which is overtly discussed in Nagarjuna’s philosophy. After diagnosis of clinging disease as the root of suffering, this paper presents Nagarjuna’s prescription to end suffering through viewing the “empty” nature of beings and “dependent arising”. By examining the root of female suffering and offering the method for its eradication, we depart from other critics who examine Lessing’s works under Sufi mystic thoughts. This departure is significant since we reveal, unlike Sufi patterns within which the suffering is only diagnosed, Lessing’s mystic aim in shaping her female characters is not only to detect their suffering, but like Buddhism, to suggest a prescription for it. </p>

Eighteenth-century natural-history illustration in the Dutch East Indies reveals verisimilitude as a goal shared between colonial artists and their counterparts in Europe. Natural-history images more generally exhibit common styles in the world settled and dominated by Europeans. Apparently dramatic differences in the local settings of the artists produced only trivial variations in representing nature pictorially, in just the way that astronomy and physics in the European colonies and spheres of influence departed hardly at all from European practice. The overwhelming strength of disciplinary norms, in science and in art, is the standard explanation for this circumstance. An alternative explanation from social history is proposed. It centers on the hypothesis of a homology between households in colonial settings and in Europe. The alternative explanation implies that both the observatory and the artist's workshop were insensitive to superstructural variation in costume and architecture, as well as variation in climate and cuisine. The hypothesis behind the alternative explanation, designated by the term complementarity, derives directly from the postmodernist dictum that ideas are extrusions of social interactions. Nevertheless, just as the strength of disciplinary norms is unresolved in postmodernist doctrine, so complementarity directly challenges the postmodernist predilection for affirming the distinctiveness of colonial cultures.

The culture of feudalism and democracy in the Dutch East Indies agreed to oppose one another. The intersection of the two cultures is the perspective of indigenous and colonial identity which ultimately demands a struggle to demand its "class" rights. The struggle for narratives of power was inevitable. The first Sundanese novel Baruang ka nu Ngarora “Poison for the Youth” (1914) by D.K. Ardiwinata and Gogoda ka nu Ngarora “Temptations for the Youth”(1951) as a novel response from M.A. Salmun has shown these oppositional phenomena. This study aims to trace the struggle for narration that has implications for identity politics in the Dutch East Indies colonial period. The method used in this study is descriptive analysis from the perspective of postcolonial studies. From a postcolonial perspective, literary works have become an important means for tracking colonialism practices where the narratives of dominant and defensive forces are nested. The results of the analysis show that the narrative of class disagreement in Gogoda ka nu Ngarora is used as a motive for empowering the spirit of democracy, in Baruang ka nu Ngarora, is used as a motive for the assertion of partiality towards feudal culture. Through the spirit of democracy, the struggle for identity politics was built by M.A. Salmun in Gogoda ka nu Ngarora to rejects feudal ideologies. Through a feudal spirit, identity politics was built D.K. Persinggungan kedua budaya tersebut dipengaruhi sudut pandang tentang identitas pribumi dan kolonial yang akhirnya memicu perjuangan menuntut hak-hak "kelas"-nya. Perebutan narasi kekuasaan pun tidak dapat dihindarkan. Novel Sunda pertama Baruang ka nu Ngarora (1914) karangan D.K. Ardiwinata dan novel sambutannya Gogoda ka nu Ngarora (1951) karangan M.A. Salmun telah menunjukkan fenomena-fenomena pertentangannya tersebut. Studi ini bertujuan menjejak perebutan narasi yang berimplikasi kepada upaya politik identitas pada masa kolonial Hindia Belanda. Metode yang digunakan dalam studi ini adalah deskriptif analisis dalam perspektif studi postkolonial. Berdasarkan perspektif postkolonial, karya sastra menjadi sarana penting untuk menjejak praktik kolonialisme tempat bersarangnya narasi-narasi kekuasaan dominan dan perlawanannya. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa narasi pertentangan kelas dalam Gogoda ka nu Ngarora digunakan sebagai motif pemberdayaan semangat demokrasi, dalam Baruang ka nu Ngarora digunakan sebagai motif penegas keberpihakan terhadap budaya feodal. Melalui semangat demokrasi, upaya politik identitas dibangun M.A. Salmun dalam Gogoda ka nu Ngarora untuk menolak ideologi-ideologi feodal. Melalui semangat feodal, politik identitas dibangun D.K. Ardiwinata dalam Baruang ka nu Ngarora untuk mengukuhkan identitas kelas.Kata kunci: politik identitas, kelas, pribumi, kolonial

Widespread hunger in the world is due mainly to the fact that people don’t care enough about one another’s well-being. Caring can be increased by encouraging social interaction. This can be done in many different ways, but the core idea here is to help people produce food for themselves. Many people who produce food in their own gardens gladly share it with their neighbors. They also share their knowledge and enthusiasm for gardening. This is a huge underutilized resource. The project proposed here is intended to facilitate that sharing.

Relation between Indonesia and The Netherlands, particularly in the tourism sector has been established long time ago. The relation has been built since Indonesia still part of Dutch colony until now. Relation in the tourism sector had disconnected between the beginning of Second World War until the 1950s. This article tries to trace the relation and the contemporary situation of the tourism sector in Netherland. The discussion focuses on the Netherlands as a tourism destination for the Dutch East Indies’ verlofgangers (those who furlough) and for Indonesian tourists. The question is how Netherlands promote their country as tourist destination and the reason why they promote their country to Dutch East Indies and Indonesian tourists. Artikel ini membahas jejak hubungan dan situasi kontemporer sektor kepariwisataan di kedua negara. Bahasan dititikberatkan pada Belanda sebagai negara tujuan wisata bagi penduduk Hindia Belanda yang ketika itu disebut verlofgangers (orang yang mengambil cuti) dan wisatawan Indonesia pada saat ini. Pertanyaan yang akan dijawab pada studi ini adalah bagaimana Belanda mempromosikan negerinya serta alasan di balik promosi itu.
