  Objective: To examine the relationship between muscle strength and muscle thickness of levator ani with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in women.Methods: This study uses a comparative cross-sectional study design. We collected 82 women who visiting the Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic of RSUPN Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo with the study group were subjects with positive cough tests while the control group were subjects with negative cough tests. The data obtained in the form of history taking, Questionnaire for Urinary Incontinence Diagnosis (QUID), physical examination (POPQ), cough test. perineometer, and ultrasound.Results: We found no significant difference between the levator ani muscle thickness to the incidence of SUI with the median levator ani muscle thickness 0.63 cm (range 0.31-1.02 and p = 0.897). While levator ani muscle strength against SUI has a median of 19.5 (range 4.6-88.6 and p = 0.001). In multivariate analysis it was found that purely SUI, prolapse and age had no significant effect on the strength of levator ani muscles with a p-value of 0.243; 0.844; 0.903.Conclusions: There is no significant difference in levator ani muscle thickness between women who experience SUI compared to those who do not. Women with SUI have weaker levator ani muscle strength than those who do not experience but are not statistically significant. And there is no correlation between muscle strength and levator ani muscle thickness in women with SUI.Keywords: muscle strength, muscle thickness, perineometer, stress urinary incontinence, ultrasound.   Abstrak Tujuan : Untuk mengkaji hubungan antara kekuatan otot dan ketebalan otot levator ani dengan keluhan IU-T pada perempuan.Metode : Penelitian ini menggunakan desain perbandingan potong lintang dengan melibatkan 82 wanita yang berkunjung di poliklinik Obstetri dan Ginekologi RSUPN Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo dengan kelompok studi adalah subyek dengan tes batuk positif sedangkan kelompok kontrol adalah subyek dengan tes batuk negative. Data yang diperoleh berupa hasil anamnesis, Questionnaire for Urinary Incontinence Diagnosis (QUID), pemeriksaan fisik (POPQ), tes batuk. perineometer , dan USG.Hasil: Hasil penelitian ini didapatkan tidak ada perbedaan bermakna antara ketebalan otot levator ani terhadap kejadian IUT dengan median ketebalan otot levator ani 0,63 cm (jarak 0,31-1,02 dan p=0,897). Sedangkan kekuatan otot levator ani terhadap IUT memiliki median 19,5 (jarak 4,6-88,6 dan p=0,001). Pada analisis multivariat didapatkan bukti bahwa secara murni IUT, prolap dan usia tidak mempunyai pengaruh bermakna terhadap kekuatan otot levator ani dengan nilai p masing-masing 0,243; 0,844; 0,903.Kesimpulan : Tidak terdapat perbedaan yang bermakna pada ketebalan otot levator ani antara perempuan yang mengalami IU-T dibanding yang tidak mengalami. Perempuan IU-T mempunyai kekuatan otot levator ani yang lebih lemah dibanding yang tidak mengalami, namun tidak bermakna secara statistik. Tidak terdapat hubungan korelasi antara kekuatan otot dan ketebalan otot levator ani pada perempuan yang mengalami IU-T. IntroductionThis study is designed to assess the percentage share of musculus obliquus externus abdominis, musculus obliquus internus abdominis and musculus transversus abdominis activity among women with stress urinary incontinence using ultrasonography.Material and methodsMaterial and methods: The study is a retrospective analysis of prospective collected data of 84 women aged 23-62 years old. In the study group are women suffering from grade 1 or 2 stress urinary incontinence according to the Stamey classification, the control group consists of women with no micturition disorders. The abdominal muscles activity was measured by using the ultrasound imaging with assessment of muscle thickness.ResultsThe analysis of musculus obliquus externus abdominis in anterolateral abdominal wall activity shows a statistically significant difference between study and control group concerning isometric tension of abdominal muscles (p=0,012) and lower part of abdomen tension (p=0,004). Women with stress urinary incontinence present a higher activity of the musculus obliquus externus abdominis than controls. In the case of the musculus obliquus internus abdominis, statistically significant differences were shown during tension of the lower part of the abdomen (p=0,024). Comparison of activity of the musculus transversus abdominis between study and control groups shows a statistically significant difference during isometric tension of abdominal muscles (p=0,018).ConclusionsThe pattern of activity of the assessed muscles differs between the study group and the control group. In the study group, the activity pattern is concerning the higher activity of the musculus obliquus externus abdominis and the lower activity of the musculus obliquus internus abdominis and musculus transversus abdominis.

Abstract Background Pelvic floor dysfunction is known to be among the principal factors influencing public health, regarding frequency, cost and effect on women’s quality of life. Radiographic assessment of the pelvic floor function and anatomy plays a vital role in the recognition of pelvic floor defects. The aim of this study is to detect the postpartum-related levator ani muscle changes thus defining the relationship between the vaginal deliveries and the etiology of pelvic floor dysfunction in order to provide guidelines to decrease the incidence of pelvic floor injuries during parturition and guide the treatment plan. Results There was a significant difference in the puborectalis muscle thickness between the case and control groups in the right puborectalis (P value ≤ 0.001) and in the left puborectalis (P value (≤ 0.001) as well as significant midpoint thickness (P value = 0.03) with 46.2% puborectalis muscle injury in the case group compared with none in the control group. Conclusion Pelvic floor MRI is highly recommended as it is a contrast-free modality that allows for both anatomical and functional analysis. Its incorporation in the routine postpartum assessment will allow early detection of abnormalities even in asymptomatic cases thus ensuring proper management and preventing the development of pelvic floor dysfunction predisposed to by repeated vaginal deliveries.

Purpose.The objective was to evaluate the usefulness of transperineal ultrasound in the assessment of the urethral length and urethral lumen by 3D/4D transperineal sonography to discriminate between female patients with subtypes of urinary incontinence.Methods.A total of 150 female patients underwent an examination because of urinary incontinence. 41 patients were diagnosed with urgency urinary incontinence (OAB), 67 patients were diagnosed with stress urinary incontinence (SUI), and 42 patients were in the control group (CTRL). Three diameters of the urethral lumen (proximal (U1), medial (U2), and distal (U3)) and the urethral length were measured. By the assessment of the urethral lumen, the presence of the urethral funneling was evaluated.Results.We found a significant difference in the urethral length and urethral lumen U2 of OAB and SUI versus CTRL. The urethral length was significantly greater (P<0.05) and the urethral lumen was significantly wider (P<0.05) in the patients with urinary incontinence. The incidence of the urethral funneling was significantly higher (P<0.05) in the study groups with urinary incontinence than in the control group.Conclusions.Our results have shown the urethral changes obtained by ultrasound in patients with urinary incontinence, but they are still insufficient to distinguish between subtypes of urinary incontinence.

Background and Aim: Ultrasonography (USG) is useful for non-invasively identifying changes that occur in soft tissue architecture. The objective of this research was to demonstrate postpartum (PP) uterine involution through the changes of perineal muscle intensity and thickness in Madura beef cow by ultrasonography. Materials and Methods: Madura's breed cows used in the research consist of eight non-pregnant (NP) cows and three PP cow. The transrectal and transperineal USG imaging of NP cows was performed on days 1, 33, and 65. USG imaging of PP cows was performed every day starting from day 1 (24 h after parturition) until day 21 PP. Transrectal USG of the reproductive tract was performed for the cervix, corpus uteri, and cornua uteri. USG was performed transcutaneously over the perineal area for coccygeus and levator ani muscles at the longitudinal and transverse angles. Reproductive tract diameter and perineal muscle intensity and thickness were measured with ultrasound imaging. Results: The analysis of the sonogram of PP cows showed that the diameter of the cervix, corpus uteri, and cornua uteri decreased within 21 days PP. The transverse view of the coccygeus muscle of PP cows showed decreased muscle intensity and thickness. On the other hand, the longitudinal view showed increased coccygeus muscle intensity and thickness. The transverse view of the coccygeus muscle of NP cows showed increased muscle intensity, while muscle thickness was reduced. Sonogram analysis of the levator ani muscle of PP cows showed decreased muscle intensity with increasing muscle thickness. However, imaging of the levator ani muscle of NP cows showed a decrease in both intensity and muscle thickness. There was a significant difference in the mean value intensity of the scanning view analysis results of the levator ani muscle of the PP cow (523.6 AU increased to 672.1 AU) and the NP cow (515.9 AU decreased to 465.4 AU). Furthermore, there was a significant difference (p<0.05) in the mean value thickness of both scanning view analyses of the coccygeus and levator ani muscles of PP cows (5.8 mm increased to 6.5 mm and 3.8 mm increased to 4.8 mm, respectively) and NP cows (8.8 mm increased to 9.1 mm and 5.9 mm decreased to 4.9 mm, respectively). Conclusion: We found that the perineal muscles, namely, the levator ani muscle and coccygeus muscle, change in size, and intensity during uterine involution as demonstrated on Madura beef cow.

Background: Range of Motion (ROM) exercise has been identified in the literature that it has an effect in improving muscle strength, especially in patients with stroke. However, little is known about the effect of ROM exercise combined with hypnosis therapy.Objective: To determine the effect of combination of hypnosis therapy and ROM exercise on upper extremity muscle strength in patients with non-hemorrhagic.Methods: This study employed a quasy experiment with pretest-posttest control group design. Thirty-two samples were selected using simple random sampling, which 16 randomly assigned in the experiment and control group. Muscle strength was measured using Muscle Strength Scale. Hypnosis Deepening test was used to measure the level of hypnosis depth. Paired t-test and Independent t-test were used for data analysis.Results: The mean value of muscle strength in the experiment group was 3.50 and  the mean value in the control group  was 2.62. Independent sample t-test obtained p-value = 0.012, indicated that there was a statistically significant difference in the mean of muscle strength of upper extremity in the experiment and control group. Paired t-test obtained p-value = 0.000, which indicated that there was significant difference between the average of muscle strength value before and after treatmentConclusion: The combination of hypnosis therapy and ROM exercise has a significant effect in increasing muscle strength of upper extremity in patients with stroke non-haemorrhagic.

Abstract Background: This study was performed to determine the effectiveness of 8 weeks of pelvic floor muscle (PFM) training by electrical stimulation (ES) on PFM function, lumbopelvic control, abdominal muscle thickness, and the contraction ratio in women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Methods: Women with SUI were randomized into an ES group (n = 18) or control group (n = 18). The ES group underwent a PFM ES training during 8-week, and the control group underwent only a general exercise without PFM training. PFM functions was measured using a perineometer. Lumbopelvic control was measured by one- and double-leg lowering tests. Abdominal muscle thickness and the contraction ratio during the active straight leg raise maneuver were measured by sonography. Results: The ES group showed significantly higher PFM strength and power than controls (p < 0.05) at after 8 weeks of training. PFM strength and power were significantly increased after 8 weeks of training in the ES group (p < 0.05). The ES group showed significantly higher values than the controls in both the one- and double-leg lowering tests (p < 0.05) at after 8 weeks of training. There were no significant between- or within-group differences, at rest or during contraction, in transverse abdominis (TrA), internal oblique abdominis (IO), or external oblique abdominis (EO) muscle thickness. Conclusion: Improvements in PFM functions by PFM ES could enhance lumbopelvic control in women with SUI.Trial registration: Clinical Research information Service, KCT0003357. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of Pilates stable device with an instability device using circuit training method on balance, flexibility, abdominal muscle strength. This research used quasi-experimental design by giving exercises aided instability devices using a gym ball with a circuit training method in six training posts. Trainer used the gym ball instability devices programmed: 1) bridge on stability ball; 2) single leg on stability ball; 3) hip lift on stability ball; 4) single-leg hip lift on stability ball; 5) stability ball leg rotations stability ball leg rotations; 6) prone scaption (Y) on stability ball. Total population is 90 male students, age ± 19 years, height ± 164,40 cm, and body weight ± 55,33kg. From the test of each group (paired sample), it was found that there was a significant difference between pretest and posttest on the variable group of stable devices with instability devices (p-value> 0,05), while the control group did not have any difference (p-value <0,05). Meanwhile, ANOVA test results obtained only the average value of the balance variable in the instability device group using gym ball with control (p-value 0,002 <0,05), the stable device using a mattress and control (p-value 0,000 <0,05), the flexibility group of the stable devices using a control mattress (p-value 0,001 <0,05), the abdominal muscle strength device instability using a gym ball with a control (p-value 0,007 <0,05 <0,05) which has a difference.
