The aim of the present work is to investigate the inhibitory effect of the aerial part of Daucus carota L essential oil (EO) on mild steel in a 1.0M HCl solution. The electrochemical study is performed using potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) curves, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements in the presence of various concentrations of the examined Daucus carota L essential oil (EO). PDP results show that the studied EO behaved as a mixed-type inhibitor. EIS measurements indicated that the EO could inhibit the corrosion of mild steel by the formation of a protective film on the surface of mild steel. The experimental results showed an efficiency of 96.5% for a concentration of 2 g/l. In addition, The DFT results proved that the major components, especially -pinene (23.5%), -Bisabolene (3.96%), and Pseudo limonene (7.20%) having a high electron-accepting ability and interact actively with the iron surface, which may be responsible for the inhibition ability of the investigated EO. Furthermore, the computational complies with the experimental data.

AbstractThe inhibition efficiency of Atlas cedar essential oil (ACEO) as a green corrosion inhibitor on steel in 1 m hydrochloric acidic was studied. The effects of temperature and the concentration of the ACEO inhibitor on the inhibition efficiency were studied. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to test the performance of the inhibitor. We found that the inhibition efficiency of ACEO exceeded 88% at 1 g/l at 298 K and increased with increasing concentration. The evaluation of activation and thermodynamic parameters reveals that the organic molecules of cedar essential oil and its fractions act by chemical adsorption on the metal surface. The adsorption of the inhibitor on the surface of steel is in a good agreement with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Increasing concentration of the corrosion inhibitor enhances the surface coverage and formation of a protective film.

The essential oil of Santolina pectinata aerial parts (SP oil) was extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed by Gas Chromatography (GC) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). 34 components were identified, accounting 59.4% of the total oil, which (Z)-heptadeca-10,16-dien-7-one (ZHD) was the major component with 28 % of the oil. The protective effect of this oil on the corrosion of mild steel (MS) in 1M HCl solution was tested by the measurements of Weight loss (WL), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). From WL measurements, the inhibiting effect was raised with the increasing of both concentration inhibitor and temperature. PDP curves led to a mixed-type inhibitor. The charge transfer process mainly controls the results of EIS measurements. The SP oil adsorption not only was discovered to obey Langmuir isotherm but showed a chemical interaction as well. The computational methods such as density functional theory (DFT), Monte Carlo (MC) and radial distribution function (RDF) simulations were also performed to analyze the possible contribution of (Z)-heptadeca-10,16-dien-7-one (ZHD) to the corrosion prevention effect of global oil.

In the present study, the corrosion inhibition effect of Spilanthes acmella aqueous leaves extract (SA-LE) on mild steel was investigated in 1.0 M HCl solution at different temperature using weight loss, Tafel polarization, linear polarization resistance (LPR), and electrochemical impedance (EIS) measurements. Adsorption of inhibitor on the surface of the mild steel obeyed both Langmuir and Temkin adsorption isotherms. The thermodynamic and kinetic parameters were also calculated to determine the mechanism of corrosion inhibition. The inhibition efficiency was found to increase with an increase in the inhibitor concentration i.e., Spilanthes acmella aqueous leaves extract, however, the inhibition efficiency decreased with an increase in the temperature. The phytochemical constituents with functional groups including electronegative hetero atoms such as N, O, and S in the extract adsorbed on the metal surface are found responsible for the effective performance of the inhibitor, which was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopic (UV-Vis) studies. Protective film formation against corrosion was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and contact angle studies. The result shows that the leaves extract acts as corrosion inhibitor and is able to promote surface protection by blocking active sites on the metal.

The goal of studying corrosion process is to find means of minimizing corrosion or prevent it from occurring. The use of inhibitors is one of the most popular methods for corrosion protection. A protective film has been formed on the surface of the mild steel in a neutral aqueous environment using a synergistic mixture of an eco-friendly inhibitor viz., Potassium Sodium Tartrate (SPT) along with polyacrylic acid (PAA) and Zn2+ ions. The inhibiting effect of SPT, PAA and Zn2+ ions have been investigated by gravimetric studies, Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The investigations revealed that SPT acts as an excellent synergist in corrosion inhibition. Optimum concentrations of all the three components of the ternary formulation are established by gravimetric studies. Potentiodynamic polarization studies inferred that this mixture functions as a cathodic inhibitor. EIS studies of the metal/solution interface indicated that the surface film is highly protective against the corrosion of mild steel. Surface characterization techniques (FTIR, SEM, AFM) are also used to ascertain the nature of the protective film. The mechanical aspect of corrosion inhibition is proposed.

2[2-Oxo-phenyl hydrazinyl ether] benzamide (2BA) was synthesized, characterized and tested effective for corrosion inhibition of mild steel in 1 N H2SO4solution using galvanodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. Polarization resistances calculated from the EIS measurements are in good agreement with those obtained from alternating current (AC) polarization measurements. The mild steel samples were also analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The result showed that 2BA is an excellent inhibitor for mild steel in acid medium. The inhibition was assumed to occurviaadsorption of the inhibitor molecule on the metal surface. In the 303-323K temperature range, the 2BA adsorption follows Langmuir isotherm model. The protection efficiency increases with increasing the inhibitor concentration in the range of 250-1000 ppm but slightly decreases with increasing temperature.

Electro-oxidation of 4-hydroxybenzalaniline in alkaline solution on mild steel surface was successfully carried out using cyclic voltammetric technique. Results demonstrated that brownish colour appeared on the mild steel surface after the cycle of voltammetric study. The presence of film was confirmed by the EIS measurement whereas the Nyquist plots obtained from EIS measurements were fitted with suitable electrical equivalent circuit. The coated mild steel exhibit better polarization resistance than uncoated mild steel.

Achyranthes aspera (AA) extracts were studied as corrosion inhibitor for mild steel (MS) in industrial water medium using mass loss and electrochemical techniques. The results of the study revealed that AA extracts inhibit MS corrosion through adsorption process following Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The protection efficiency increased with increase in inhibitor concentration and decreased with temperature. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements showed that the charge transfer resistance increases with increase in the concentration of AA extracts. The polarization curves obtained indicate that AA extracts act as mixed type of inhibitor. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyze the surface adsorbed film.

Three piperidin-4-one oxime derivatives viz. 3,5-dimethyl-2,6-diphenyl-piperidin-4-one oxime (DDPO), 3-ethyl-2,6-diphenyl-piperidin-4-one oxime (EDPO), and 1-methyl-3-isopropyl-2, 6-diphenyl-piperidin-4-one oxime (MIDPO) were synthesized. Corrosion inhibiting ability of these compounds in 1 M HCl was studied using weight loss study, potentiodynamic polarization measurements, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, XRD and SEM with EDS measurements. Weight loss studies revealed that all the three oximes are good corrosion inhibitors. The order of inhibiting ability of these compounds is as follows: DDPO > EDPO > MINDO. Results of the polarization measurement showed that these inhibitors do not alter the mechanism of either hydrogen evolution or mild steel dissolution reaction, proving the mixed mode of inhibition. At constant acid concentration, increase of inhibitor concentration increased the charge transfer resistance (R ct ), complimented with decrease of double layer capacitance (C dl ), thereby indicating the increase of percentage inhibition efficiency. XRD and SEM with EDS analysis provided strong proof for the existence of inhibitor film over the mild steel surface.

This paper deals with the effect of anion groups (SO42- and Cl-) on inhibition behaviours of Vietnam orange peel essential oil (OPE) for corrosion process of mild steel in acidic media. The electrochemical techniques (potentiodynamic, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)), weight loss and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses are used in this study. The results show that anion groups do not affect the inhibition mechanism of OPE. The OPE behaves as mixed inhibitor for mild steel corrosion in both 1N HCl and H2SO4 acid. The inhibition efficiency of OPE in 1N HCl is greater than that in 1N H2SO4 which implies that the adsorption of the inhibitor is influenced by the nature of anions in acidic solutions. Moreover, the OPE inhibits both general and pitting corrosion for mild steel in the acidic media.

AbstractThe inhibition effect of Thymus zygis subsp. gracilis (TZ) on mild steel corrosion in 1 m hydrochloric acid has been investigated by weight loss measurements, surface analysis [scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), three-dimensional (3D) profilometry, and Fourier transform infrared analysis], potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Gravimetric results indicate that TZ exhibits good inhibition efficiency of 80.40% attained at 3 g/l. Polarization measurements show that the studied inhibitor is a mixed type. EIS measurements revealed that the charge transfer resistance increases with increasing concentration of TZ, which suggests a Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Based on SEM-EDX and 3D profilometry, it appears that the surface is remarkably improved in the presence of TZ oil compared to that exposed to the acid medium without TZ oil. From the obtained results, it can be concluded that this oil is a new natural substance that can be used against material corrosion in aggressive medium.
