The modern concept of a curriculum originally derived from the Latin word for a race course. Undergraduate medical education is part of a continuum of education and training.The new curriculum is structured to provide a balance among learning opportunities through integrated teaching system.  This study was carried out to explore the views of teachers and students regarding the current undergraduate medical curriculum.  This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted between October 2019 to October 2020 among the teachers and students of a private medical college and hospital (MH Samorita medical collegesandhospital) in Dhaka Bangladesh. The sample size were 100 in total.  Most of the participants suggested for changes in overall existing MBBS curriculum. Highest satisfaction was seen in content related to learning objectives that were 90% and highest dissatisfaction was seen in Phase distribution of subjects that were 89%.However, they were satisfied with present pattern of course content, objectives, evaluation system and carry on system. Teachers and students evaluation may prove useful if analyzed further to overcome the shortcomings of existing MBBS curriculum. Bangladesh Journal of Medical Education Vol.13(1) January 2022: 27-32

This descriptive type of cross-sectional study was conducted to find out the teachers' opinion about teacher evaluation in undergraduate medical education at two government and three non-government medical colleges in Dhaka city by convenience sampling. 30 teachers were participated and they were from Assistant Professor to Professor Level. Teachers gave their opinion about potential use, facilities, barriers and factors affecting the implementation of teacher evaluation through in-depth interview. Majority of teachers opined that a well developed teacher evaluation system is a must in undergraduate medical education. It is strongly felt by the participant teachers that teacher evaluation has presently become very much essential against the backdrop of continuous changing of curriculum, technology, teaching styles, pattern of society, disease demography etc. Teachers agreed that it can improve teaching ability and protect students from incompetent teachers. Most of the teachers agreed about the necessity of student involvement in the teacher evaluation programme. Problem if arise can be resolved by implementing teacher evaluation with the help of a precise or proper guideline from policy level. Study recommended that teacher evaluation should start from undergraduate medical college. Study also mentioned that teachers' classroom performance and relationship with students should be used as parameters of teacher evaluation. In conclusion it can be said that without teacher evaluation there is no way for quality improvement of teacher and undergraduate medical education.Bangladesh Journal of Medical Education Vol.6(1) 2015: 12-18

Background: Periodic students’ feedback ensures and enhances the effectiveness of the curriculum of medical subject. Objective: This study was designed to obtain students appraisal of the undergraduate pharmacology curriculum and teaching methodology. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Pharmacology at Colonel Malek Medical College, Manikganj, Bangladesh from May to June, 2019 for a period of two months. Questionnaire-based data were collected from students of both sexes who had completed 3rd Professional examination. Likert Scale was applied to collect students’ feedback on pharmacology. Results: A total number of 40 students were recruited for this study of which 60.0% students were strongly agreed about organized teaching. About 47.5% students were agreed that the course was appropriate at their level and achieved their goals in Pharmacology. However, 55% of them strongly agreed that teacher provided clear constructive feedback during class. Total 60%, were agreed that the course improved their problem-solving skills. Overall, 55% students were agreed regarding their satisfaction on Pharmacology course delivery and conduction. Conclusion: In conclusion, periodic appraisal from students regarding evaluation of the student-centric undergraduate pharmacology curriculum is vital in developing efficient medical graduates. Background: The aim of medical education is to produce competent, physically and mentally strong health professionals, as they are going to be the pillars of the future health care system. Stress is one of the most common and process-oriented obstacles in medical education. It often exerts a negative effect on the academic performance, physical health, and psychological well-being of the students. Dealing with overloaded medical curriculum, competing with peers, being away from home and meeting high expectations imposed by parents and society to excel is among the common stressful transitions at this stage.Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out amongst 352 undergraduate medical students of a private medical college in a rural area of Maharashtra during April to October 2019. The structured questionnaire was used to record the data. Collected data was used to assess the severity of mental health issues among medical students.Results: Majority 194 (55.11%) students were in the age of 18 to 20 years followed by 141 (40.06%) were in 21 to 23 years. There were 196 (55.68%) girl students and 156 (44.32%) boys. According to the various categories, 80 (22.73%) of the students had low stress scores, followed by 76 (21.59%) in minimal. A highly significant difference in stress scores was seen between boys and girls, which was more in boys.Conclusions: Study concluded that undergraduate medical students perceive minimal to very high stress presented as various systems that vary with the year of study and gender wise too. There is a further need to look into the various causes of stress.

Background: The development of an ideal doctor-patient relationship requires empathy. Empathetic conversation aids in the formation of an open and trusting equation between doctor and patient. Furthermore, this leads to accurate diagnoses and more compliance to the advised treatment. In this manner, empathy helps in overall recovery of the patient and improves global functioning and generalised well-being. This study aims to make note of the fluctuation in empathy levels during medical education. Studies done in various countries have found factors such as curriculum, clinical rotations timing and gender to progressively influences empathy levels in students throughout their medical training. The recent trend of violence against healthcare professionals in India calls for an urgent action into the gap between doctors and patients communication. Empathy towards patients and attendants will reduce such untoward events. In this current context, we should improve empathy levels among the training doctors. As a first step, we should assess various factors affecting empathy among health care professionals. Method: This cross sectional study was done among undergraduates of a rural medical college in Northern Telangana during the time period of October to December 2019. Their empathy levels were assessed using Jefferson’s Scale for Empathy- Student version (JSE-S). Result: Of the 470 students surveyed, 227 were males and 243 females. Female students were having higher empathy among first year and second years (p<0.001). Empathy levels seem to decline from first year to second year following which the mean empathy remains similar throughout the remaining years in students of both sexes. There is no significant relation between mean empathy scores and choice of future speciality (p>0.05). Conclusion: Female undergraduate students are found to be more empathetic than their male counterparts. A fall in empathy scores from the first to second year of MBBS is seen, which is when students enter their clinical rotations. Targeted intervention at this time may go a long way in the creation of a new generation of more empathetic physicians. Hence, there is a need for evaluation of teaching and learning techniques in medical education. Further, there is a call for more research into the determinants of decline in empathy amongst medical professionals.

THE position of science in the modern world has been aptly compared to that of the church in medieval times. Just as the manifestos of the church were then accepted without question, today the pronouncement that "it has been scientifically proved" is sufficient authority for the general public. In somewhat similar vein, a statement to the effect that medical education has not kept pace with the rapid changes in medical practice is accepted without critical analysis by many physicians and taken to mean that a sweeping revision of the entire medical curriculum is indicated. Is this position justifiable? Should we choose a new site, lay a new foundation and erect a new edifice to house medical education? Or is the old building structurally so sound that it would be better to modernize it from within? Can additions be made without spoiling the "lines" which are of such symmetry that they have been admired throughout the world? This is a question of great importance to which I will not attempt to give a categorical answer. On the other hand, there is no doubt that the present building is in urgent need of a thorough house cleaning, and that some remodeling is in order. It is the objective of this paper to offer suggestions for certain simple changes and additions which are needed now. Student Body We must face the fact that there is a wide variation in the level of instruction among the approximately 800 approved colleges in the United States. This is clearly attested by the great difference in the mean scores of students from the different colleges on the Medical College Admission Test.

Abstract Introduction: Research experience gained by medical students during their under graduate tenure plays a significant role in their future endeavours in the field of medical research. The present study was a cross-sectional study conducted to know the attitudes and perceptions towards research among final year medical students in a private medical college. Methods: A total of 220 students participated in the study. Results: The majority of the students agreed that research is important in the medical field (88.6%, 195/220). The majority also believed that research methodology to be part of medical curriculum (72.7%, 160/220). 31.8% (70/220) felt that Research methodology will be helpful to enter competitive exams (USMLE, PLAB). The barriers for conducting research as believed by students were: Lack of interest (32.7%, 72/220), Lack of time (31.4%, 135/220), Inadequate knowledge about research methodology (51.4%, 113/230), Lack of guidance by faculties (27.7%, 61/220), Lack of research curriculum (34.1%, 75/230) Inadequate facilities for research (35.5%, 78/220), Inadequate financial support (30.9%, 68/220) and others 2.9% (6/220). Of the participating students, 23.2% (51/220) participated in research during medical school, while 76.8% (179/220) did not. Conclusion: Medical colleges should emphasize more on research among the undergraduate students. There is a need to reform the medical curriculum with more weightage towards research methodology.

Background: Anemia is a public health concern with adverse health consequences. The vast nature of medical curriculum demands rigorous efforts and stress putting health science students at risk of anemia. In the present study, we aim to estimate the hemoglobin level of undergraduate health science students at Chitwan Medical College. Methods: This cross-sectional study included all 386 year I and II undergraduate health science students enrolled at Chitwan Medical College. An informed consent was obtained from all the participants and hemoglobin values were obtained using Sahli’s hemoglobinometry at Physiology laboratory of basic science complex during March to August 2019. Ethical approval was obtained from CMC-IRC (Ref: CMC-IRC/075/076-125). Chi-squared test was done to seek the association of various demographic factors with hemoglobin values. Results: Anemia was found among 37.8% undergraduate health science students as per World Health Organization (WHO) criteria. A total of 44.7% males and 32.3% females were found to have anemia. Statistical significant association was observed between body mass index (BMI) and hemoglobin level with higher BMI contributing to higher hemoglobin values. There was no association of hemoglobin level with sex, place of origin and stream of study.   Conclusions: Almost 4 out of 10 undergraduate medical students enrolled at Chitwan Medical College had lower hemoglobin values for age and sex as suggested by WHO.  Keywords: anemia, health science, hemoglobin, students, undergraduate

The purpose of using technology in education today is to provide students with an opportunity to learn a given topic at their own pace and convenience. Integrating technology into education is of considerable value because using technology effectively has the potential to make learning meaningful (Kirschner, 2015). Within a decade, technology has transformed education by affecting (a) the method of delivering course content to students, (b) student engagement with course content outside class hours, (c) the capability of a teacher to create different learning opportunities for students of diverse learning styles, (d) and the ability to convert course information into knowledge bytes for students of varied educational backgrounds and abilities. In this short span of time, the purpose of using technology in education has shifted from merely delivering course content to aiding students in learning the content. Using technology in education is more like "the idea that you can learn something without directly learning it" (Henriksen et al., 2019, p. 86). In other words, even though technological competence may not be the objective of a course, learning the technology will certainly help in achieving the objective of the course.

Introduction: The pandemic of COVID-19 affected every single person in the world. This pandemic also affected the academics of medical and dental colleges of Nepal. In these conditions, the virtual study was used as an emergency measure during the COVID-19 period, with an adaptation to the “new normal” to deliver preclinical medical education. This has brought both challenges and opportunities to medical education. The objective of the study is to find out whether the anatomy virtual classes were helpful among the first and second year medical and dental students of a medical college. Methods: The descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 206 first and second-year medical and dental students of a medical college between 1st May 2021-31st May 2021 after getting the ethical clearance from the Institutional Review Committee (reference no. 0504202109). The convenient sampling was done. The data were analyzed with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 20 version. Point estimate at 95% Confidence Interval was calculated along with frequency and percentage for binary data. Results: Out of the total 206 students, 173 (84%) (78.99-89.01 at 95% Confidence Interval) found that virtual anatomy classes were not helpful for the study of the anatomy classes.  Conclusions: From the study, we conclude that more than half of the students found that virtual classes were not helpful for the study of anatomy classes. Students have difficulty in studying dissection, cadaveric, and embryological structures via virtual classes. Physical class is better for studying anatomy than virtual classes for medical and dental students.
