Spiny lobsters of the genus Panulirus are economically important and support local fishing communities. However, mud spiny lobster Panulirus polyphagus is among the least known species within this genus in terms of their biological information. This study relates to the size distribution, length-weight relationship, and size at morphometric maturity of P. polyphagus in the Johor Strait. Within the year 2010, 300 specimens were collected off the coast of Johor Strait, Malaysia. There was no significant difference in body size (cephalothorax length, CL) and body weight (BW) between sexes. CL and BW were highly correlated and males of P. polyphagus displayed positive growth allometry, whereas the opposite was observed in females. Based on the merus (ML) and carpus length (CPL) of the third right walking leg, the piecewise linear regression analysis estimated that the size at maturity for male was 6.58 cm CL (based on ML) and 7.58 cm CL (based on CPL), whereas it was 8.18 cm CL (based on ML) and 6.75 cm (based on CPL) for females. Two discriminant functions of high classification and revalidation rates (> 98.6% in males and > 98.7% in females) that can discern maturation status in males and females of P. polyphagus were derived using the discriminant function analysis. Biological information derived from this study serves as an essential baseline for future fishery management and conservation of P. polyphagus.

A study was carried out on the size distribution, length-weight relationship and condition factor of a deep-water population of the commercially important tropical sea cucumber Holothuria scabra in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Samples were collected from fishers and supplementary information gathered. The deep water (15-20 m) population of H. scabra is dominated by large sized individuals that have already attained maturity. There was no significant difference in size between male and female individuals (p>0.05). The sex ratio in this population significantly differed from 1:1 in favour of male individuals (p=0.01). The results showed significant correlation between length and weight for male, female, indeterminate individuals, and pooled data, with r values of 0.681, 0.794, 0.821 and 0.680, respectively. Moreover, the b-value for male, female, indeterminate individuals and pooled data was 1.288, 1.439, 1.686 and 1.407 respectively, which revealed that individuals of deep-water H. scabra exhibit negative allometric growth. The mean condition factor (K) value when all data were pooled together was 4.213±0.106 indicating that individuals were in good condition and came from a healthy environment. This study fills a key information gap that is relevant to the management of the H. scabra fishery in the country.

Sexual dimorphism in size, age, maturation, and growth characteristics of boarfish (Capros aper) in the Northeast Atlantic – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 69: 1729–1735. Boarfish (Capros aper) have, in recent years, become of increasing commercial importance due to their apparent increase in abundance in the Northeast Atlantic. This study presents detailed biological information relevant to understanding stock structure and dynamics. Boarfish are a long-lived species that reach a maximum age of >30 years. The size distribution is skewed towards larger sizes, as expected from an unexploited stock with sexual dimorphism, where females are, on average, larger than males. No seasonal effects occur in size distribution and sex ratio, indicating that females and males stay together in shoals throughout the year. Females become increasingly dominant in abundance at larger sizes and older ages. There is no significant difference in length at maturity nor age at maturity between the two sexes, with L50 = 9.7 cm and A50 = 3.4 years. Growth is dimorphic following von Bertalanffy growth characteristics, with a common t0 = –2.897, but significantly different K and Linf values, where females have K = 0.145 and Linf = 16.519 and males have K = 0.181 and Linf = 14.437. The sexual dimorphism in size is thus caused by sex-specific growth and longevity patterns.

Study Design: Retrospective cohort study. Objective: As hospital compensation becomes increasingly dependent on pay-for-performance and bundled payment compensation models, hospitals seek to reduce costs and increase quality. To our knowledge, no reported data compare these measures between hospital settings for elective lumbar procedures. The study compares hospital-reported outcomes and costs for elective lumbar procedures performed at a tertiary hospital (TH) versus community hospitals (CH) within a single health care system. Methods: Retrospective review of a physician-maintained, prospectively collected database consisting of 1 TH and 4 CH for 3 common lumbar surgeries from 2015 to 2016. Patients undergoing primary elective microdiscectomy for disc herniation, laminectomy for spinal stenosis, and laminectomy with fusion for degenerative spondylolisthesis were included. Patients were excluded for traumatic, infectious, or malignant pathology. Comparing hospital settings, outcomes included length of stay (LOS), rates of 30-day readmissions, potentially preventable complications (PPC), and discharge to rehabilitation facility, and hospital costs. Results: A total of 892 patients (n = 217 microdiscectomies, n = 302 laminectomies, and n = 373 laminectomy fusions) were included. The TH served a younger patient population with fewer comorbid conditions and a higher proportion of African Americans. The TH performed more decompressions ( P < .001) per level fused; the CH performed more interbody fusions ( P = .007). Cost of performing microdiscectomy ( P < .001) and laminectomy ( P = .014) was significantly higher at the TH, but there was no significant difference for laminectomy with fusion. In a multivariable stepwise linear regression analysis, the TH was significantly more expensive for single-level microdiscectomy ( P < .001) and laminectomy with single-level fusion ( P < .001), but trended toward significance for laminectomy without fusion ( P = .052). No difference existed for PPC or readmissions rate. Patients undergoing laminectomy without fusion were discharged to a facility more often at the TH ( P = .019). Conclusions: We provide hospital-reported outcomes between a TH and CH. Significant differences in patient characteristics and surgical practices exist between surgical settings. Despite minimal differences in hospital-reported outcomes, the TH was significantly more expensive.

Background:Hyperuricemia is associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)1,2, but the relationship to fibrosis remains uncertain3. Moreover, it is not known whether lowering serum urate will affect the course of NAFLD. The availability of data from two randomized trials of pegloticase, a pegylated recombinant mammalian uricase, that profoundly decreases serum urate afforded the opportunity to test the hypothesis that lowering urate might improve NAFLD.Objectives:To determine whether treatment of chronic refractory gout patients with pegloticase was associated with improvement in NAFLD determined by Fibrosis 4 index (Fib4).Methods:Databases from patients with chronic refractory gout who participated in two randomized 6 month clinical trials (RCTs) of pegloticase were analyzed4. Sub-sets who had persistent urate lowering to levels <1 mg/dL in response to biweekly pegloticase (Responders, n=36) were compared to those who received placebo (n=43). Since liver biopsy information was not available on these subjects, we relied on Fib4, a validated non-invasive estimate of liver fibrosis in a variety of liver diseases5,6calculated from measurements of AST, ALT, platelet count and age (Age x AST/platelets x √ALT). A Fib4 value of 1.3 is an indication that further evaluation of liver disease is warranted.Results:At baseline, the mean Fib4 values were 1.40 ± 0.86 in pegloticase responders and 1.04 ± 0.53 in subjects receiving placebo. As shown in figure 1, subjects receiving placebo exhibited a change of 0.26 ± 0.41 in the Fib4 score over the six months of the RCTs compared with 0.13 ± 0.62 in the pegloticase responders (p=0.048; by linear regression). When only the subjects with a Fib4 value > 1.3 were considered, a significant difference in the change in the Fib4 values over the 6 months of the trial between pegloticase responders and those receiving placebo was also observed (-0.15 ± 0.67 vs 0.37 ± 0.42, p=0.004, by linear regression). The correlations between serum urate area under the curve (AUC) over the 6 months of the trial and the change in Fib4 value was rs=0.33, p=0.0.0004 (Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient). Finally, multiple linear regression analysis indicated serum urate AUC (as a surrogate measure for group) is the main contributor to the change in Fib4 (p=0.018 by linear regression).Conclusion:The data are consistent with the conclusion that persistent lowering of serum urate had a significant impact on Fib4 levels, implying a possible effect on the course of NAFLD. The results support a more complete analysis involving biopsy examination of the impact of urate on liver inflammation and fibrosis.References:[1]Yang C et al. Objectives The objectives were to examine the density, bubble size distribution and durability of sodium tetradecyl sulphate foam and the consistency of production of foam by a number of different operators using the Tessari method. Methods 1% and 3% sodium tetradecyl sulphate sclerosant foam was produced by an experienced operator and a group of inexperienced operators using either a 1:3 or 1:4 liquid:air ratio and the Tessari method. The foam density, bubble size distribution and foam durability were measured on freshly prepared foam from each operator. Results The foam density measurements were similar for each of the 1:3 preparations and for each of the 1:4 preparations but not affected by the sclerosant concentration. The bubble size for all preparations were very small immediately after preparation but progressively coalesced to become a micro-foam (<250 µm) after the first 30 s up until 2 min. Both the 1% and 3% solution foams developed liquid more rapidly when made in a 1:3 ratio (37 s) than in a 1:4 ratio (45 s) but all combinations took similar times to reach 0.4 ml liquid formation. For all the experiments, there was no statistical significant difference between operators. Conclusions The Tessari method of foam production for sodium tetradecyl sulphate sclerosant is consistent and reproducible even when made by inexperienced operators. The best quality foam with micro bubbles should be used within the first minute after production.

Two methods were developed for the determination of dapagliflozin (DAPA) in pure form and in tablets. The procedure utilized was UV-Visible Spectroscopy and RP-HPLC with PDA detector to quantify DAPA in bulk and tablets. The sensitive linear range was identified for both methods within 0.5-5.0μg/mL. The linear regression analysis was identified for both methods with correlation coefficient(r)>0.99. The LOD and LOQ values were found to be 0.05 μg/mL and 0.5 μg/mL for the method by UV-Spectroscopy. The molar absorptivity (ε) was calculated as 1.27 X 105 L.mol-1cm-1. The RP-HPLC method produced LOD and LOQ values of 1.0 ng/mL and 0.5 μg/mL. Both methods were simple, precise, reproducible to quantify the amount of unknown in bulk as well as in tablets and estimated accurately within the range of 100.0±0.5%. Statistical analysis was performed on the data obtained. There was no significant difference between the developed and reported methods with p>0.05. Both methods can be applied for routine analysis of DAPA in bulk and tablets with good accuracy and precision.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between children's prosocial behavior and self-regulation skills. To collect the data of the study, demographic information form developed by the researcher was used for the demographic information of children, the prosocial behavior sub-dimension of the social behavior scale was used for the prosocial behavior, and the self-regulation skills scale was used for the self-regulation skills of the children. The collected data were analyzed by independent sample t-test, Pearson’s product moment correlation analysis and simple linear regression analysis in a computer package software. As a result of the research, while the self-regulation and prosocial behaviors of children differed according to gender and age of children, the situation of the children whether they have siblings and duration of the pre-school education did not make any significant difference. According to these results, girls' self-regulation and prosocial behavior scores were higher than that of boys and 6 years of age children’s scores were higher than that of 5 years of age children. While there was a moderate positive significant relationship between self-regulation skills and prosocial behavior, it was concluded that the prosocial behavior of children predicted self-regulation skills at the level of 11%.   Keywords: Prosocial behavior, self-regulation skills, early childhood, preschool

This study aims to identify factors that influence the effectiveness of practical woodworking and determine the effectiveness of practical woodworking from the perspective of students of secondary vocational schools in the province of Aceh. Factors studied were the workshop equipment, safety workshops, teaching skills, the workshop environment and student interest. This study was designed to investigate the significant differences concerning factors woodworking practical effectiveness based on demographic factors. A total of 130 respondents were randomly selected from six vocational schools in the province of Aceh. The instrument consists of a set of questionnaire consisting of 49 items and distributed to second level students. Data analysis using the two types of statistics, namely descriptive statistics and statistical inference. The results showed no significant difference between factors woodworking practical effectiveness based on demographic factors except the income level of parents and the parents of the respondents work. The results of multiple linear regression analysis stepwise method found that only four factors (environmental factors workshops, the students interest, the skills of teachers and workshop equipment factors) that affect the practical effectiveness of woodworking with the correlation coefficient R = 0.779. This shows there is a significant effect of the four factors, the effectiveness of practical woodworking, accounting for 60.6% (R2 = 0.606) changes in the variance in effectiveness of hands-on woodworking, and between the four factors, the workshop environment is the factor that most influences the effectiveness practical woodworking by contributing 43.3% (R2 = 0.433) of the variance in effectiveness of practical woodworking. The main implication of this study is the need for attention from the authorities to be more serious in efforts to improve the facilities and infrastructure in the workshop as well as security issues in practical workshops so that the effectiveness of the woodwork to be more robust.

<p>The composite media, Zeliac<sup>TM</sup> was developed with the initial aim to provide low cost adsorbent with promising adsorption capacity. This study was conducted to investigate the removal of UV absorbance at 254 nm (UV<sub>254</sub>) in Kerian river water using Zeliac<sup>TM</sup> as the media. Batch experiments study was carried out to determine the optimum removal of UV<sub>254</sub> by Zeliac<sup>TM</sup>. The experimental data were fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms to investigate the adsorption mechanism. The results from batch study exhibit that Zeliac<sup>TM</sup> is capable to remove 74.4% UV<sub>254</sub> at the dosage of 7g/100 ml. Linear isotherm analysis suggests that the best fitting linear line is Freundlich isotherm with R<sup>2</sup> values of 0.9294 indicating multilayer adsorption. Similarly, non-linear regression analysis reveals that the adsorption of UV<sub>254</sub> by Zeliac<sup>TM</sup> is attributed by physisorption. The non-linear Freundlich isotherm gives a better fit to the adsorption of UV<sub>254</sub> than Langmuir isotherm with R<sup>2</sup> values of 0.9488. The results are supported with low values of X<sup>2</sup>, ARE, HYBRID and MPSED from the error function analysis.&nbsp; Additionally, it is noted that the linear analysis overestimates the constant parameters’ values for Freundlich isotherm, which cause larger errors as estimated by the error function analysis. Hence, non-linear analysis is more appropriate in explaining the batch experiment data.</p>
