Three new tetramic acid derivatives (1–3) and a new polyketide (4) along with eight known compounds (5–12) were isolated from cultures of the deep-sea-derived fungus Penicillium sp. SCSIO06868. Four new structures were elucidated by analysis of one-dimensional/two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Their absolute configurations were established by X-ray crystallography analysis and comparison of the experimental and reported electronic circular dichroism (ECD) values or specific optical rotation. Compound 3 exhibited potent, selective inhibitory activities against Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus with minimum inhibitory concentration values of both 2.5 μg/ml. Also, compound 3 showed weak antiviral activity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 main protease, which was responsible for the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

We have discovered and studied a telesubstitution reaction in a biologically important heterocyclic ring system. Conditions that favour the tele-substitution pathway were identified: the use of increased equivalents of the nucleophile or decreased equivalents of base, or the use of softer nucleophiles, less polar solvents and larger halogens on the electrophile. Using results from X-ray crystallography and isotope labelling experiments a mechanism for this unusual transformation is proposed. We focused on this triazolopyrazine as it is the core structure of the in vivo active anti-plasmodium compounds of Series 4 of the Open Source Malaria consortium.

Archive of the electronic laboratory notebook with the description of all conducted experiments and raw NMR data could be accessed via following link https://ses.library.usyd.edu.au/handle/2123/21890 . Three new phenylhydrazones, penoxahydrazones A–C (compounds 1–3), and two new quinazolines, penoxazolones A (compound 4) and B (compound 5), with unique linkages were isolated from the fungus Penicillium oxalicum obtained from the deep sea cold seep. Their structures and relative configurations were assigned by analysis of 1D/2D NMR and mass spectroscopic data, and the absolute configurations of 1, 4, and 5 were established on the basis of X-ray crystallography or ECD calculations. Compound 1 represents the first natural phenylhydrazone-bearing steroid, while compounds 2 and 3 are rarely occurring phenylhydrazone tautomers. Compounds 4 and 5 are enantiomers that feature quinazoline and cinnamic acid units. Some isolates exhibited inhibition of several marine phytoplankton species and marine-derived bacteria.

AbstractCo-crystallization of C-propyl-pyrogallol[4]arene (PgC3) with 4,4′-bipyridine (bpy) in ethanol afforded a multi-component complex (PgC3) · 3(bpy) ·(EtOH) (1) that consists of a one-dimensional brick-wall framework, which was formed by four pyrogallol[4]arene molecules and two juxtaposed bpy molecules, entrapping two other bpy molecules as guests within each cavity. Heating a mixture of PgC3 and trans-1,2-bis-(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe) in an ethanol-water mixed solvent allowed the isolation of a multi-component complex (PgC3) ·(bpe) · 2(EtOH) ·(H2O) (2), which has a two-dimensional wave-like polymer structure with the bpe molecules embedded in the wave trough between two PgC3 molecules. Single-crystal X-ray crystallography was utilized to investigate the hydrogen bonding networks of the multi-component complexes 1 and 2.

A novel Bi (III) coordination compound, [Bi(HQ)(Cl)4]n ((Q = pyridine-4-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazone), was prepared in this research using a sonochemical technique. SEM, infrared spectroscopy (IR), XRD, and single-crystal X-ray analysis were utilized to analyze the Bi(III) coordination compound. The structure determined using single-crystal X-ray crystallography indicates that the coordination compound is a 1D polymer in solid state and that the coordination number of bismuth (III) ions is six, (BiSCl5), with one S donor from the organic ligand and five Cl donors from anions. It is equipped with a hemidirectional coordination sphere. It is interesting that the ligand has been protonated in the course of the reaction with a Cl- ion balancing the charge. This compound’s supramolecular properties are directed and regulated by weak directional intermolecular interactions. Through π–π stacking interactions, the chains interact with one another, forming a 3D framework. Thermolysis of the compound at 170 °C with oleic acid resulted in the formation of pure phase nanosized Bi (III) oxide. SEM technique was used to examine the morphology and size of the bismuth (III) oxide product produced.

Stable five-coordinate Pt(II) complexes have been highlighted as a promising and original platform for the development of new cytotoxic drugs. Their interaction with proteins has been scarcely studied. Here, the reactivity of the five-coordinate Pt(II) compound [Pt(I)(Me) (dmphen)(olefin)] (Me = methyl, dmphen = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, olefin = dimethylfumarate) with the model proteins hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) and bovine pancreatic ribonuclease (RNase A) has been investigated by X-ray crystallography and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The X-ray structures of the adducts of RNase A and HEWL with [Pt(I)(Me)(dmphen)(olefin)] are not of very high quality, but overall data indicate that, upon reaction with RNase A, the compound coordinates the side chain of His105 upon releasing the iodide ligand, but retains the pentacoordination. On the contrary, upon reaction with HEWL, the trigonal bi-pyramidal Pt geometry is lost, the iodide and the olefin ligands are released, and the metal center coordinates the side chain of His15 probably adopting a nearly square-planar geometry. This work underlines the importance of the combined use of crystallographic and mass spectrometry techniques to characterize, in detail, the protein–metallodrug recognition process. Our findings also suggest that five-coordinate Pt(II) complexes can act either retaining their uncommon structure or functioning as prodrugs, i.e., releasing square-planar platinum complexes as bioactive species.

One-dimensional (1D) polynuclear Cu(II) complex (1) derived from (5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-2-hydroxybenzohydrazide (H2L) is synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, ESI-MS, and single crystal X-ray crystallography. Its catalytic performance towards the solvent-free microwave-assisted peroxidative oxidation of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons under mild conditions is compared with that of dinuclear Cu(II) complexes (2 and 3) of the same ligand, previously reported as antiproliferative agents. Polymer 1 exhibits the highest activity, either for the oxidation of cyclohexane (leading to overall yields, based on the alkane, of up to 39% of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone) or towards the oxidation of toluene (selectively affording benzaldehyde up to a 44% yield), after 2 or 2.5 h of irradiation at 80 or 50 °C, respectively.

AbstractSynthesis and properties of tris(phosphane)(ethene)nickel(0) complexes (dmpe)(PR3)Ni(C2H4) (R = CH3(4), c-C6H11(5), and C6H5 (6)) are reported. In solution. 4-6 are thermolabile and undergo ligand exchange reactions affording tetrakis(phosphane)nickel(0 ) and bis(phosphane)- (ethene)nickel(0) complexes. 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR data of 4-6 confirm the tetrahedral geometry around nickel. For 6 , the crystal and molecular structure has been determined by X-ray crystallography.

Reaction of diamide ligand, namelyN,N’-2,6-bis (4-pyridylmethyl) pyridine dicarboxamide (L) with cadmium nitrate and cadmium perchlorate has given rise to the formation of two types coordination polymers. Compound (CP1-Cd) with formula molecule {[Cd (L)2(H2O)2](NO3)2·6H2O}nis a one-dimensional coordination polymer while compound (CP2-Cd), with formula molecule {[Cd (L)2(H2O)2](ClO4)2·31⁄2H2O.CH3OH}n, is a two dimensional coordination polymer. These coordination polymers were preparedviaslow evaporation methods and completely characterized by combination of solid state techniques such as Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis and X-ray crystallography. This study revealed that coordination polymers derived fromN,N’-2,6-bis (4-pyridylmethyl) pyridine dicarboxamide can accommodate anions with different sizes, showing good potential as anion receptor.
