Perceived quality of experience for speech listening is influenced by cognitive processing and can affect a listener's comprehension, engagement and responsiveness. Quality of Experience (QoE) is a paradigm used within the media technology community to assess media quality by linking quantifiable media parameters to perceived quality. The established QoE framework provides a general definition of QoE, categories of possible quality influencing factors, and an identified QoE formation pathway. These assist researchers to implement experiments and to evaluate perceived quality for any applications. The QoE formation pathways in the current framework do not attempt to capture cognitive effort effects and the standard experimental assessments of QoE minimize the influence from cognitive processes. The impact of cognitive processes and how they can be captured within the QoE framework have not been systematically studied by the QoE research community. This article reviews research from the fields of audiology and cognitive science regarding how cognitive processes influence the quality of listening experience. The cognitive listening mechanism theories are compared with the QoE formation mechanism in terms of the quality contributing factors, experience formation pathways, and measures for experience. The review prompts a proposal to integrate mechanisms from audiology and cognitive science into the existing QoE framework in order to properly account for cognitive load in speech listening. The article concludes with a discussion regarding how an extended framework could facilitate measurement of QoE in broader and more realistic application scenarios where cognitive effort is a material consideration.

The way in which individuals think about their own cognitive processes plays an important role in various domains. When eyewitnesses assess their confidence in identification decisions, they could be influenced by how easily relevant information comes to mind. This ease-of-retrieval effect has a robust influence on people’s cognitions in a variety of contexts (e.g., attitudes), but it has not yet been applied to eyewitness decisions. In three studies, we explored whether the ease with which eyewitnesses recall certain memorial information influenced their identification confidence assessments and related testimony-relevant judgements (e.g., perceived quality of view). We manipulated the number of reasons participants gave to justify their identification (Study 1; N = 343), and also the number of instances they provided of a weak or strong memory (Studies 2a & 2b; Ns = 350 & 312, respectively). Across the three studies, ease-of-retrieval did not affect eyewitnesses’ confidence or other testimony-relevant judgements. We then tried—and failed—to replicate Schwarz et al.’s (1991) original ease-of-retrieval finding (Study 3; N = 661). In three of the four studies, ease-of-retrieval had the expected effect on participants’ perceived task difficulty; however, frequentist and Bayesian testing showed no evidence for an effect on confidence or assertiveness ratings.

Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC) combines a set of standards and technologies to enable high-quality audio, video, and auxiliary data exchange in web browsers and mobile applications. It enables peer-to-peer multimedia sessions over IP networks without the need for additional plugins. The Opus codec, which is deployed as the default audio codec for speech and music streaming in WebRTC, supports a wide range of bitrates. This range of bitrates covers narrowband, wideband, and super-wideband up to fullband bandwidths. Users of IP-based telephony always demand high-quality audio. In addition to users’ expectation, their emotional state, content type, and many other psychological factors; network quality of service; and distortions introduced at the end terminals could determine their quality of experience. To measure the quality experienced by the end user for voice transmission service, the E-model standardized in the ITU-T Rec. G.107 (a narrowband version), ITU-T Rec. G.107.1 (a wideband version), and the most recent ITU-T Rec. G.107.2 extension for the super-wideband E-model can be used. In this work, we present a quality of experience model built on the E-model to measure the impact of coding and packet loss to assess the quality perceived by the end user in WebRTC speech applications. Based on the computed Mean Opinion Score, a real-time adaptive codec parameter switching mechanism is used to switch to the most optimum codec bitrate under the present network conditions. We present the evaluation results to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach when compared with the default codec configuration in WebRTC.

Purpose This study seeks to analyze the influence of the consumer's perceived benefits deriving from two different promotional incentives offered via social media on the perceived quality of the heritage complex.Design/methodology/approach A quasi-experimental study was carried out among online users, implementing two different promotional stimuli. Facebook was selected as the social network through which the promotional incentives were offered in the experiment. The sample was obtained via a panel of Internet users provided by Sondea Internet SL.Findings The results showed that the benefits perceived by the tourists will depend on the sales promotion type offered. On the one hand, free VIP pass was found to be mostly related to hedonic benefits that positively affect perceived quality. On the other hand, 2 × 1 offer would be perceived as a utilitarian benefit and is likely to exert a fairly negative effect on perceived quality.Practical implications Tourism managers and practitioners are encouraged to analyze the characteristics of certain types of sales promotions, as each promotional incentive bears different values and associated benefits. The findings of this study suggest managers and practitioners to implement non-monetary promotions to enhance brand equity and perceived quality. Thus, it is paramount for the managers of cultural institutions and heritage sites to trust in sales promotions which can be very helpful if they are designed carefully.Originality/value This study pioneers the analysis of the impact of the benefits associated with different typologies of sales promotions on social networks on the perceived quality of a heritage site.

Abstract Study question Are there any differences relating to the perceived quality of life (QoL) and sexual satisfaction among infertile women? Summary answer There were no differences between women who already had a baby and those who did not relating to the perceived QoL and sexual satisfaction. What is known already Infertility is a medical disease with a high social component with a 16% prevalence. There have been many investigations regarding to the physical part of the infertility but the sexual and marital satisfaction has not been as intensively investigated. The importance of the psychological counseling in fertility treatments has already been proven, but the significance of sexual satisfaction on individual’s perception on QoL has not been as deeply studied. Study design, size, duration A transversal descriptive study was done. 313 heterosexual married women with fertility problems were recruited in collaboration with the Spanish patient association “Red Nacional de Infértiles”. The Fertility quality of life tool (FertiQoL) was selected to measure the perceived QoL and the Index of Sexual Satisfaction (ISS) was chosen to study the degree of sexual satisfaction. The data collection was made between January and February 2020 and all the information was gathered online. Participants/materials, setting, methods 313 women filled the questionnaire which had 4 different modules: A sociodemographic module (sex, age, studies, time trying to conceive, moment of treatment and offspring), two modules for each measurement instrument and a last module in which they could write their personal experiences regarding to the infertility journey. ANOVA and t-Student statistical analyses were done to compare the different independent variables. To see if FertiQoL could explain the sexual satisfaction a regression analysis was made. Main results and the role of chance To achieve 95% power (α = 0.05) and an effect size of 0.25, a minimum sample size of 210 was needed and a sample of 313 women was recruited. There were no statistical differences between women with previous offspring and those who did not in neither of the FertiQoL subscales (Emotional: 7,4 ± 3,884 vs. 7,34 ± 4,235; Mind/Body: 9,65 ± 5,098 vs. 8,66 ± 4,979; Relational: 16,88 ± 4,807 vs. 16,3 ± 4,956; Social: 10,52 ± 5,02 vs. 10,1 ± 4,801; Tolerability: 5,91 ± 4,114 vs. 6,65 ± 3,357; Environment: 12,71 ± 5,02 vs. 11,42 ± 4,963) nor in the ISS questionnaire (47,48 ± 6,488 vs. 47,22 ± 7,35). Regarding to the power of the FertiQoL instrument and the perceived QoL to predict the sexual satisfaction, the regression model showed that the sexual satisfaction could be explained in 26,3% of the cases by the relational and mind/body subscales of the FertiQol tool. This model showed the inherent relationship between marital and personal wellbeing in order to obtain a better sexual satisfaction. Limitations, reasons for caution As the study had a transversal design, no cause-effect relationships could be done. It would be desirable to establish a longitudinal study in order to determine a more accurate relationship between the studied variables. Wider implications of the findings: This study showed that the impact of infertility in women with secondary infertility diagnose could be at least as high as in women with primary infertility diagnose. FertiQoL would be a reasonable instrument to estimate the sexual satisfaction of infertile women. Sexology should be part of the infertility counselling programs. Failure to recognise the deteriorating patient can cause severe harm and is related to preventable death. Human factors are often identified as contributing factors. Simulation-based education is used to develop clinicians' human factors skills. This article discusses the evidence concerning the efficacy of simulation-based education for improving the recognition and management of the acutely deteriorating adult patient, and the limitations of simulation-based education. Findings demonstrated simulation-based education was the most effective educational method identified for training staff in recognising unwell patients. The evidence demonstrating the impact of simulation-based education on patient outcomes was equivocal. The quality of the evidence was low grade regarding the efficacy of simulation-based education on human factors. Further research is required to confirm the efficacy of simulation-based education for human factors and patient outcomes.

The acoustic quality of classrooms is crucial for children’s listening skills and consequently for their learning. Listening abilities in kids are still developing, and an environment with inadequate acoustic characteristics may create additional problems in speech perception and phonetic recognition. Background noise or reverberation may cause auditory processing problems and greater cognitive effort. There are also other elements which can make difficulty in listening and understanding in noisy environments an even more serious problem, such as learning disabilities, mild to severe hearing loss or bilingualism. Therefore, it is important to improve the acoustic quality of the classrooms, taking into account the specific needs of children in terms of signal-to-noise ratio and reverberation time, in order to ensure a proper quality of listening. The aim of this work is to analyse, through the review of previous studies, the impact that the acoustic of classrooms has on children’s listening skills and learning activities.
