Abstract Sports development involves important aspects that collaborate towards the achievement of a high level sports performance. Parental support is one such fact to be considered in Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD), capable of benefiting or harming athletes if not adequately administered. This study registers and discusses the importance of parental support in female Artistic Gymnastics, from the perspective of Brazilian gymnasts who have participated in the Olympic Games. The method used was Oral History with the technique known as oral testimony. The participants of the study were the ten Brazilian gymnasts who represented Brazil in the Olympic Games from when the country first participated in this championship, in 1980, up to the best Brazilian classification in Athens (2004), totaling ten gymnasts (a sample comprising 100% or the research universe). Testimony analysis was conducted through crossanalysis. The study shows unanimity among the gymnasts in regards to the importance of parental support in the sports development process. In addition to reinforcing the results found in the literature, the testimonies provide details of the relationships between the gymnasts and their families for deeper reflections around the subject, a distinguishing feature of studies with oral testimonies.

Context: The use of creatine as a dietary supplement has become increasingly popular over the past several decades. Despite the popularity of creatine, questions remain with regard to dosing, effects on sports performance, and safety. Evidence Acquisition: PubMed was searched for articles published between 1980 and January 2017 using the terms creatine, creatine supplementation, sports performance, and dietary supplements. An additional Google search was performed to capture National Collegiate Athletic Association–specific creatine usage data and US dietary supplement and creatine sales. Study Design: Clinical review. Level of Evidence: Level 4. Results: Short-term use of creatine is considered safe and without significant adverse effects, although caution should be advised as the number of long-term studies is limited. Suggested dosing is variable, with many different regimens showing benefits. The safety of creatine supplementation has not been studied in children and adolescents. Currently, the scientific literature best supports creatine supplementation for increased performance in short-duration, maximal-intensity resistance training. Conclusion: While creatine appears to be safe and effective for particular settings, whether creatine supplementation leads to improved performance on the field of play remains unknown.

The mission of the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports (ISYS) is to provide leadership, scholarship, and outreach that “transforms” the face of youth sports in ways that maximize the beneficial physical, psychological, and social effects of participation for children and youth while minimizing detrimental effects. Since its inception in 1978, ISYS has partnered with numerous organizations to promote healthy youth sports participation. In this article, the general steps ISYS takes to form and facilitate partnerships are addressed. Four long-term partnerships are also described. The services provided to these organizations are described and the advantages and challenges of working with partners, in general, are delineated. How these partnerships are used to facilitate the teaching, outreach-engagement, and scholarship components of the Michigan State University land grant mission are also described. The case of ISYS shows that conducting community outreach and engagement projects greatly enhance the scholarly mission of the university.

The past two decades witnessed increased participation in professional as well as amateur sport, giving impetus to concomitant amplified interest in long-term athlete development (LTAD). LTAD has been described as the structured and progressive growth of an athlete through different stages of development resulting in some athletes achieving elite sport status. Furthermore, the interest in athletic career development from a holistic perspective has contributed to management approaches underscoring sustainable talent development and participation in sport. The current study investigated youth sports development pathways through both models of development within a South African context. A descriptive quantitative cross-sectional design was used to generate a convenient sample of athletes (N = 267). The Talent Development Environment Questionnaire (TDEQ) was administered, which in previous studies produced acceptable psychometric properties. Principal factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, Monte Carlo parallel simulation, MANOVA, and hierarchical regression were performed to analyze the data. The TDEQ was validated for the South African context and was found to measure four components, namely supportive and challenging environment, development fundamentals, support networks, and long-term development. Respondents in the various developmental categories of novice, advanced and elite student-athletes were not statistically significantly influenced by any of the four factors. Controlling for the talent developmental phase, the model proposed did not statistically significantly predict the development pathway of youth athletes. The results provide evidence with some practical significance as supportive and challenging environment and long-term development focus reported a small effect. Further research is warranted to develop a more suitable measuring instrument to measure the talent development pathway within the investigated athlete environment.

Abstract: Introduction: After the residency in Internal Medicine, most graduates choose to undergo a new selection process to obtain a second specialty. The phenomenon of early specialization is encouraged as early as in the undergraduate course. Despite this, the demand for general practitioners is growing. Objective: To investigate the factors that lead the newly graduated clinician to undertake a new residency. Method: This is a cross-sectional study that analyzes the responses of Internal Medicine residency graduates from the state of Pernambuco in 2020, through a questionnaire available online by Google Forms, containing questions about social aspects, undergraduate medical course, Medical Residency and intentions for the future career. Results: There were 81 responses of the 104 possible participants (77.88%). Most of these were female (66.67%), graduated from public universities (69.14%) and had already started the Internal Medicine residency shortly after graduation (50.62%). Regarding the specialty choice, 51.85% answered they had decided in the second year of residency, and 80.25% stated that they had undergone the selection process for the second specialty shortly after completing the Internal Medicine residency. The most often chosen career was Cardiology (20%). The factors most often associated with the choice of specialty were, according to the means on the Likert scale, “work in an outpatient setting”, “long-term patient follow-up”, and “more contact with patients”. Conclusion: As far as it could be investigated in the literature, this was the first Brazilian study on specialty choices after the Internal Medicine residency. It was possible to identify the most important reasons for choosing a second specialty among the graduates of this Medical Residency program in Pernambuco in 2020. More studies are needed to establish correlations between the factors of choice with the chosen specialty.

Achievement of high efficiency of functioning of children and youth sports schools is possible only in conditions of building a rational system of training young football players. The rational system of training the sports reserve in football, among other things, involves the maximum realization of the athlete's motor and mental potential in the optimal age intervals for this. The orientation of sports schools towards achieving a long-term goal and full disclosure of individual capabilities, starting from the first stages of many years of training, is the key to the emergence of qualified and competitive players. At the same time, one of the main features of the system of youth football in Ukraine is the excessive striving of the majority of coaches of children's teams for a result in a match and victories in tournaments. The purpose of the research was to study the specificity of the orientation of various components of training young football players of 6-13 years old in terms of priority of the competitive result. Research results. The article presents the results of the analysis of the negative influence of the priority of the current competitive result on the content and orientation of various types of training. The nature of the changes in the orientation of the training process and their relationship with the level of preparedness of the players in the long term have been demonstrated. Taking into account the interconnection of different types of training, the consequences of planning the training process were revealed, provided that the current competitive results are of paramount importance at the early stages of long-term training.

Since the dawn of social media, sports performance professionals have had the ability to share ideas and display training methodologies to anyone across the globe. Research problem/aim: The problem with this connectedness is much of this information is baseless. Coaches, athletes and parents are too often misinformed, confused, and duped by fad exercise programs and gimmicks that put can puts their athletes under too much stress (physical and emotional) too fast, putting them at risk of injury. Findings: In order to be successful on the sporting field, athletes need to be able to make it to the playing field first. Sports performance specialists need to focus on long term development not just pushing their athletes to the limit. Athletes need a structured training progression that builds a solid foundation of strength, endurance, and coordination to give them the tools to be successful in the weight room before placing them under a loaded bar or implementing advanced training techniques. With athletes at any level, high school, collegiate, or professional, even the most talented of athletes on the field may not necessarily have a very strong background in the weight room. Conclusion: A systematic pattern of athletic development would allow adaptation in fundamental movement patterns and develops requisite physical qualities, and allow the athletes to advance safely and effectively.

The role of flexibility on athletic performance is going on to be studied both acutely and how it affects the performance in the long-term. It is important to understand the effects of various stretching types and define the most appropriate form in order to maximize the human movement and performance. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching techniques are commonly used at athletic and clinic settings with the aim of optimizing motor performance and rehabilitation in order to increase range of motion. Yet, new research results put forth that the relation between performance and stretching is not as its thought and come up to this belief with suspicion. The aim of this review is to focus on the positive effects of PNF stretching on performance and to provide the reader with the latest researches on athletic performance. The researches reveal that PNF stretching can increase athletic performance in the long-term. Besides, it is more possible to obtain and maintain the benefits of PNF techniques if they are performed accurately and consistently.
