Hemorrhoidal disease (HD) is the symptomatic enlargement and/or distal displacement of the normal hemorrhoidal cushions and is one of the most frequent diseases in colorectal surgery. Several surgical or office-based therapies are currently available, with the aim of being a more tailored approach. This article aimed to elucidate the historical evolution of surgical therapy for HD from ancient times, highlighting the crucial steps, controversies, and pioneers in the field. In contrast with the previous literature on the topic that is often updated to the 1990s, with the introduction of stapled hemorrhoidopexy and transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization, this article describes all new surgical and office-based treatments introduced in the first 20 years of the 2000s.

San Cataldo is located on the Adriatic sea about 10 km east from Lecce (Italy). Since ancient times it was a port and the remains of a Roman pier are visible: the study illustrate the evolution of its coastal landscape from historical origins until today. The port was renovated in medieval times and also between the 19th and 20th centuries with the construction of a lighthouse, a new pier and a tramway with Lecce. During the last century emerged the tourist vocation of San Cataldo with events of overbuilding characterizing the nowadays coastal landscape.

AbstractRenaut corpuscles are cylindrical hyaline structures that arise from the peripheral nerve perineurium and project into the endoneurium. Despite their earlier accurate description in the French and German literature, Kernohan and Woltman (1938) reported very similar structures as “nerve infarcts” in a case series of vasculitic neuropathy. Krücke (1955) deserves credit for discovering this error and further explaining how peripheral nerves react differently (from brain parenchyma) to ischemia. We tried to elucidate the reason why Kernohan and Woltman, and others, made this scientific error by describing the historical evolution of our understanding of the structure and function of Renaut corpuscles.

To date, ideal surgical management of anal stenosis has not been well defined. Different surgical options have been described in literature to treat anal stricture starting from partial lateral internal sphincterotomy to different flap anoplasties. For severe anal stenosis, advancement flaps are the only option and all the techniques show good result and patient satisfaction. We treated five cases of severe anal stenosis by V-Y anoplasty in Colorectal Surgery Unit of BSMMU. Here we have shown the clinical outcome of V- Y anoplas DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bmj.v42i2.18986 Bangladesh Med J. 2013 May; 42 (2): 51-54

Abstract: Torture is a practice that has existed since ancient times and has been practiced in varying levels depending on the location in question. The main concept -torture- is analysed taking into account several important contextual aspects: its evolution through the years, the types of practices that were used and how these practices have evolved, the places in which it was practiced as well as a terminological analysis. The methodology used in the paper that the article covers is based on three main stages: first stage consisted on establishing a theoretical basis; second stage consisted in analysing the concept of torture considering its historical evolution, its practices and its current perception. And finally we explained the terminology from the point of view of the creation of a Spanish-English bilingual glossary for terms related to the concept of torture.
