Recent studies have highlighted the potential of utilizing carob kibbles as a bioactive-rich food ingredient associated with substantial health benefits. Roasting is a key process in enhancing the sensory characteristics of carob kibbles, also affecting the bioactive polyphenols and leading to the formation of Maillard reaction products (MRPs), including the polymeric melanoidins that are associated with a high antioxidant potential but remain unexplored in carob. In this work, we employed for the first time attenuated total reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy to probe the dynamic chemical and structural changes upon the roasting of carob kibbles, along with the investigation of the in vitro antioxidant activity through the 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and the determination of the total polyphenolic, proanthocyanidin, gallic acid and cinnamic acid contents. Roasting significantly enhanced the in vitro antioxidant activity of the polyphenolic carob extracts, with different rates at distinct roasting temperatures. The ATR-FTIR analysis enabled the identification of the changes in the structural features of polyphenolic compounds that were related to the improved antioxidant activity upon roasting. Furthermore, the detection of characteristic signatures for the polymeric melanoidins in the infrared (IR) fingerprint region provided the first evidence for the formation and structural properties of these complex, diverse compounds in roasted carob kibbles.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant activity of Ficus carica, commonly known as fig. Methanol and ethanol extracts of F. carica leaves were subjected to 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity assay where ascorbic acid being positive control had an IC50 value of 3.98±0.26 while methanol and ethanol fractions showed an IC50 of 101.76±1.12 and 93.12±1.17 respectively exhibiting their high antioxidant potential. DPPH assay was also performed on high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) elutions. Most active antioxidant components in ethanol extract were eluted between 17–18 min, and those in methanol were eluted over 14–15 min and upon ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometery (Orbitrap Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) were identified to be 13-Docosenamide, (Z)- for ethanol and ficusin for methanol fraction. Thus, it is concluded that these two components are most probable determinants of antioxidant potential of F. carica leaf extracts. © 2021 Friends Science Publishers

Objective: This study was designed to evaluate in vitro antioxidant activity and wound healing activity in Triticum aestivum (wheat grass).Methods: T. aestivum commonly known as Wheatgrass had a wide range of health benefits among the young grass of common wheat plant components includes chlorophyll, flavonoids, and Vitamins A, C, and E. Wheatgrass is used in Folklore medicine for treatment of skin diseases and wound healing. In our present study, petroleum ether, ethanol and aqueous extracts of T. aestivum have been evaluated for in vitro antioxidant activity and wound healing activity by 1,1- diphenyl, 2 Picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity, and Chick chorioallantoic method, respectively.Results: The results of both the assay showed that all the extracts of T. aestivum have significant antioxidant and wound healing activity on dose-dependent manner.Conclusion: The wheatgrass has antioxidant and wound healing activity.

The root of Polygonum multiflorum Thunb. (Heshouwu in Chinese) is one of the most popular herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). However, after steam processing (Zhi-heshouwu in Chinese), the root is known to have different properties and medicinal values compared with Heshouwu. Eleven volatile Maillard reaction products were identified in the extract of Zhi-heshouwu, but not in that of Heshouwu. The new products were four furanones, two furans, two nitrogen compounds, one pyran, one alcohol and one sulfur compound. The antioxidant activities were compared between the extracts from Zhi-heshouwu and Heshouwu. The results showed that the extract from Zhi-heshouwu presented a higher 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity than the extract from Heshouwu, with IC50 values of 0.43 mg/mL and 2.9 mg/mL, respectively ( p<0.05). The hydroxyl radical scavenging activities of the two were similar (IC50 0.98 mg/mL and 1.45 mg/mL, respectively; p > 0.05). 5-Hydroxymethyl-furfural, a main compound in the extract of Zhi-heshouwu, showed IC50 values for scavenging DPPH radicals and hydroxyl radicals of 1.6 mg/mL and 0.24 mg/mL, respectively. The antioxidant activities of the extract from Zhi-heshouwu could partly explain the different therapeutic effects of Heshouwu and Zhi-heshouwu in TCM.

In the present investigation, the synthesis of few novel leads bearing 2-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-4–(substitutedphenyl)-1H-1,5–benzodiazepine pharmacophore is described. The substituted chalcone and their derivatives 3(a-j) were synthesized by base catalyzed Claisen-Schmidt condensation between p-hydroxy-acetophenone and appropriate aldehydes. The dibromostyryl ketones 4(a-j) were obtained by the reaction the chalcone with bromine in acetic acid. The dibromostyryl ketone were reacted with methanol in presence of sodium methoxide followed by acidic hydrolysis give 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-(substitutedphenyl)-1,3-propanediones. The targeted compounds; the substituted 1,5-benzodiazepines were synthesized with o-phenylenediamine and synthesized 1,3-propanediones. The structures of synthesized compounds were confirmed by spectroscopic and analytical techniques (IR, 1H-NMR, and MS). The free radical scavenging activity of the synthesized analogs was monitored by in vitro antioxidant activity protocol. The derivatives 6f, 6g, 6i, and 6j were found to exhibit good antioxidant activity with 59.07%, 41.33%, 68.3% and 60.4% scavenging activity respectively as compared to standard ascorbic acid which demonstrated 79.73% activity. The current research revealed the potential of 2-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-4–(substituted-phenyl)-1H-1,5–benzodiazepine as emerging free radical scavengers. The study helped to establish a structure-activity relationship (SAR) where the substitution on the phenyl moiety of the 1,5-benzodiazepine was found to play profound role and influence over biological activity. The research will open new avenues for the development of antioxidant moieties having perspectives in cancer, inflammation, and several other ailments.

  Objectives: In this study, we determined the in vitro antioxidant capacity of Phyllodium pulchellum of aqueous, ethanol, and chloroform leaf extracts.Methods: In this context, the in vitro antioxidant activity was demonstrated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azinobis(3- ethylbenzothiazolone-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS+) radical scavenging assay, the total antioxidant activity of phosphomolybdenum assay and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity in different leaf extracts of P. pulchellum. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was compared to standard ascorbic acid.Results: All the four methods of antioxidant showed good reducing power and reducing capacity with increasing concentration again taking the ethanol leaf extract to the top position. Remarkable of antioxidant activity was observed in ethanol leaf extract on the hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity with the lowest inhibitory concentration 50 values of (155.40 μg/ml) followed by DPPH (432.90 μg/ml) and ABTS+ (524.40 μg/ml).Conclusion: These results suggest that the leaf of P. pulchellum could be a valuable source of new antioxidant properties, from the above results it seen that this plant exhibits pharmaceutical activity.

Objective: The objective is to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the methanolic leaf extract of Wedelia chinensis.Methods: In vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated by studying 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, superoxide radical scavenging activity, ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) scavenging activity, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, metal chelating activity, and total antioxidant activity. Ascorbic acid, BHT, quercetin, and EDTA were used as standards for the experiments.Results: Inhibition concentration50 values observed for DPPH radical scavenging, superoxide radical scavenging, and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities were determined to be 62.5, 769.23, and 617.28 μg/ml, respectively and that of FRAP scavenging, metal chelating, and total antioxidant activities were found to be 343 μmol Fe (II)/g, 79.56 mg EDTA/g extract, and 398.17 mg ascorbic acid eq/g extract, respectively.Conclusion: The results clearly indicate that methanolic leaf extract of the study species W. chinensis is effective in scavenging free radicals and has the potential to be a powerful antioxidant.

The present study was done to investigate the in vitro antioxidant activity of aqueous extract of Sesbania sesban seeds. The assays such as DPPH, Chelation, ferrous ion, ABTS, Superoxide radical, hydroxyl radical assay, FRAP assay and total antioxidant activity were done to assess the antioxidant potential of the seed extract. The extract was tested at a concentration range of 100 – 500 μg/ml for all the assays and the values were compared with a standard. The results obtained showed that the radical scavenging activity was in a dose dependent manner and found to increase with increase in concentration of the extract. The IC50 value was calculated for the assays and tabulated for inference. Different assays revealed different levels of radical scavenging potential of the extract and exhibited as a better antioxidant source for therapeutic applications.

Macaranga denticulata (Blume) Müll.Arg. (family Euphorbiaceae) is an evergreen tree and a common pioneer species in moist open and secondary forest. It is commonly known as Kharpa in Mizoram. Traditionally, the species of Macaranga are used in the treatment of swelling, cuts, sores, boils and bruises. Preliminary phytochemical screening and evaluation of in vitro antioxidant activity were carried out on the methanolic extract obtained from the bark of M. denticulata. The presence of alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, saponins, steroids and triterpenoids was indicated by the tests conducted. The in vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, reducing power and hydrogen peroxide radical scavenging activity. Ascorbic acid and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) were used as reference standards. The methanolic extract of the plant shows a strong antioxidant activity comparable to that of the reference standards.
