Near-surface S-wave velocity structures (VS) are crucial in site-effect studies and ground-motion simulations or predictions. We explored S-wave velocity structures in Taichung, the second-largest city in Taiwan by population, by employing array measurements of microtremors at a total of 53 sites. First, the fundamental-mode dispersion curves of Rayleigh waves were estimated by adopting the frequency–wavenumber analysis method. Second, the surface-wave inversion technique was used to calculate the S-wave velocity structures of the area. At many sites, observed phase velocities were almost flat, with a phase velocity of approximately 800–1300 m/s in the frequency range of 0.6–2 Hz. A high-velocity zone (VS of 900–1500 m/s) with a convex shape was observed at the shallow S-wave structures of these sites (depths of 50–500 m). On the basis of the inversion results, we constructed two-dimensional and three-dimensional contour maps to elucidate the variations of VS structures in Taichung. According to VS-contour maps at different depths, lowest S-wave velocities are found at the western coastal plain, whereas highest S-wave velocities appear on the eastern side. The S-wave velocity gradually decreases from east to west. Moreover, the S-wave velocity of the Tertiary bedrock is assumed to be 1500 m/s in the area. According to the depth-contour map (VS = 1500 m/s), the depths of the bedrock range from 250 m (the eastern part) to 1550 m (the western part). The thicknesses of the alluvium gradually decrease from west to east. Our results are consistent with the geology of the Taichung area.

We have conducted microtremor array measurements to estimate shallow S-wave velocity ([Formula: see text]) structures at two sites (the 921 Earthquake Museum of Taiwan and the Taiwan Provincial Consultative Council) located near surface ruptures of the Chelungpu Fault. Ten stations, consisting of three different-aperture triangles and a central station, are adopted for each array deployment. Using the array data, we calculate dispersion curves of Rayleigh waves using the frequency-wavenumber spectrum method and then estimate [Formula: see text] structures by the surface-wave inversion technique. The obtained 2D [Formula: see text] profiles could clearly show compressive and flexural deformation structures with the surface ruptures located at relatively weak (low [Formula: see text]) zones. This indicates compressive buckling as the most likely mechanism for surface rupturing along these low [Formula: see text] zones. Importantly, this study successfully depicts strata disturbances in a fault fracture zone using microtremor array measurements and forward numerical modeling of trishear fault-propagation folds.

Seismological experiments have been undertaken at a test site near Chalk River, Ontario that consists of crystalline rocks covered by glacial sediments. Near-surface P and S wave velocity and amplitude variations have been measured along profiles less than 2 km in length. The P and S wave velocities were generally in the range 4.5–5.6 and 2.9–3.2 km/s, respectively. These results are consistent with propagation through fractured gneiss and monzonite, which form the bulk of the rock body. The P wave velocity falls below 5.0 km/s in a region where there is a major fault and in an area of high electrical conductivity; such velocity minima are therefore associated with fracture systems. For some paths, the P and 5 wave velocities were in the ranges 6.2–6.6 and 3.7–4.1 km/s, respectively, showing the presence of thin sheets of gabbro. Temporal changes in P travel times of up to 1.4% over a 12 h period were observed where the sediment cover was thickest. The cause may be changes in the water table. The absence of polarized SH arrivals from specially designed shear wave sources indicates the inhomogeneity of the test site. A Q value of 243 ± 53 for P waves was derived over one relatively homogeneous profile of about 600 m length. P wave velocity minima measured between depths of 25 and 250 m in a borehole correlate well with the distribution of fractures inferred from optical examination of borehole cores, laboratory measurements of seismic velocities, and tube wave studies.

In urban subsurface exploration, seismic surveys are mostly conducted along roads where seismic vibrators can be extensively used to generate strong seismic energy due to economic and environmental constraints. Generally, Rayleigh waves also are excited by the compressional wave profiling process. Shear-wave (S-wave) velocities can be inferred using Rayleigh waves to complement near-surface characterization. Most vibrators cannot excite seismic energy at lower frequencies (<5 Hz) to map greater depths during surface-wave analysis in areas with low S-wave velocities, but low-frequency surface waves ([Formula: see text]) can be extracted from traffic-induced noise, which can be easily obtained at marginal additional cost. We have implemented synthetic tests to evaluate the velocity deviation caused by offline sources, finding a reasonably small relative bias of surface-wave dispersion curves due to vehicle sources on roads. Using a 2D reflection survey and traffic-induced noise from the central North China Plain, we apply seismic interferometry to a series of 10.0 s segments of passive data. Then, each segment is selectively stacked on the acausal-to-causal ratio of the mean signal-to-noise ratio to generate virtual shot gathers with better dispersion energy images. We next use the dispersion curves derived by combining controlled source surveying with vehicle noise to retrieve the shallow S-wave velocity structure. A maximum exploration depth of 90 m is achieved, and the inverted S-wave profile and interval S-wave velocity model obtained from reflection processing appear consistent. The data set demonstrates that using surface waves derived from seismic reflection surveying and traffic-induced noise provides an efficient supplementary technique for delineating shallow structures in areas featuring thick Quaternary overburden. Additionally, the field test indicates that traffic noise can be created using vehicles or vibrators to capture surface waves within a reliable frequency band of 2–25 Hz if no vehicles are moving along the survey line.

Seismic velocity dispersionin fluid-saturated rocks appears to be dominated by tow mecahnisms: the large scale mechanism modeled by Biot, and the local flow or squirt mecahnism. The tow mechanisms can be distuinguished by the ratio of P-to S-wave dispersions, or more conbeniently, by the ratio of dynamic bulk to shear compliance dispersions derived from the wave velocities. Our formulation suggests that when local flow denominates, the dispersion of the shear compliance will be approximately 4/15 the dispersion of the compressibility. When the Biot mechanism dominates, the constant of proportionality is much smaller. Our examination of ultrasonic velocities from 40 sandstones and granites shows that most, but not all, of the samples were dominated by local flow dispersion, particularly at effective pressures below 40 MPa.

We evaluate the performance of traveltime tomography and full-wave inversion (FWI) for near-surface modeling using the data from a shallow seismic field experiment. Eight boreholes up to 20-m depth have been drilled along the seismic line traverse to verify the accuracy of the P-wave velocity-depth model estimated by seismic inversion. The velocity-depth model of the soil column estimated by traveltime tomography is in good agreement with the borehole data. We used the traveltime tomography model as an initial model and performed FWI. Full-wave acoustic and elastic inversions, however, have failed to converge to a velocity-depth model that desirably should be a high-resolution version of the model estimated by traveltime tomography. Moreover, there are significant discrepancies between the estimated models and the borehole data. It is understandable why full-wave acoustic inversion would fail — land seismic data inherently are elastic wavefields. The question is: Why does full-wave elastic inversion also fail? The strategy to prevent full-wave elastic inversion of vertical-component geophone data trapped in a local minimum that results in a physically implausible near-surface model may be cascaded inversion. Specifically, we perform traveltime tomography to estimate a P-wave velocity-depth model for the near-surface and Rayleigh-wave inversion to estimate an S-wave velocity-depth model for the near-surface, then use the resulting pairs of models as the initial models for the subsequent full-wave elastic inversion. Nonetheless, as demonstrated by the field data example here, the elastic-wave inversion yields a near-surface solution that still is not in agreement with the borehole data. Here, we investigate the limitations of FWI applied to land seismic data for near-surface modeling.

AbstractThe Antarctic mantle and lithosphere are known to have large lateral contrasts in seismic velocity and tectonic history. These contrasts suggest differences in the response time scale of mantle flow across the continent, similar to those documented between the northeastern and southwestern upper mantle of North America. Glacial isostatic adjustment and geodynamical modeling rely on independent estimates of lateral variability in effective viscosity. Recent improvements in imaging techniques and the distribution of seismic stations now allow resolution of both lateral and vertical variability of seismic velocity, making detailed inferences about lateral viscosity variations possible. Geodetic and paleo sea-level investigations of Antarctica provide quantitative ways of independently assessing the three-dimensional mantle viscosity structure. While observational and causal connections between inferred lateral viscosity variability and seismic velocity changes are qualitatively reconciled, significant improvements in the quantitative relations between effective viscosity anomalies and those imaged by P- and S-wave tomography have remained elusive. Here we describe several methods for estimating effective viscosity from S-wave velocity. We then present and compare maps of the viscosity variability beneath Antarctica based on the recent S-wave velocity model ANT-20 using three different approaches.
