Hydrogen-rich superhydrides are promising high-Tc superconductors, with superconductivity experimentally observed near room temperature, as shown in recently discovered lanthanide superhydrides at very high pressures, e.g., LaH10 at 170 GPa and CeH9 at 150 GPa. Superconductivity is believed to be closely related to the high vibrational modes of the bound hydrogen ions. Here, we studied the limit of extreme pressures (above 200 GPa) where lanthanide hydrides with large hydrogen content have been reported. We focused on LaH16 and CeH16, two prototype candidates for achieving a large electronic contribution from hydrogen in the electron–phonon coupling. In this work, we propose a first-principles calculation platform with the inclusion of many-body corrections to evaluate the detailed physical properties of the Ce–H and La–H systems and to understand the structure, stability, and superconductivity of these systems at ultra-high pressure. We provide a practical approach to further investigate conventional superconductivity in hydrogen-rich superhydrides. We report that density functional theory provides accurate structure and phonon frequencies, but many-body corrections lead to an increase of the critical temperature, which is associated with the spectral weight transfer of the f-states.

The phonon spectra, band structure and density of states of cubic perovskite SnTiO 3 were investigated using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) computation. The potential energy curves of cations displacement and the formation energy of Sn substitution to B-site were calculated to estimate the structure stability. The results indicate that perovskite SnTiO 3 is a promising ferroelectric end member for lead-free piezoelectric materials and applications.

Two-dimensional boron is promising as a tunable monolayer metal for nano-optoelectronics. We study the optoelectronic properties of two likely allotropes of two-dimensional boron using first-principles density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory. We find that both systems are anisotropic metals, with strong energy- and thickness-dependent optical transparency and a weak (<1%) absorbance in the visible range. Additionally, using state-of-the-art methods for the description of the electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions, we show that the electrical conductivity is limited by electron-phonon interactions. Our results indicate that both structures are suitable as a transparent electrode.

<div> <div> <div> <p>Interaction energies of halide-water dimers, X-(H2O), and trimers, X-(H2O)2, with X = F, Cl, Br, and I, are investigated using various many-body models and exchange-correlation functionals selected across the hierarchy of density functional theory (DFT) approximations. Analysis of the results obtained with the many-body models demonstrates the need to capture important short-range interactions in the regime of large inter-molecular orbital overlap, such as charge transfer and charge penetration. Failure to reproduce these effects can lead to large deviations relative to reference data calculated at the coupled cluster level of theory. Decompositions of interaction energies carried out with the absolutely localized molecular orbital energy decomposition analysis (ALMO-EDA) method demonstrate that permanent and inductive electrostatic energies are accurately reproduced by all classes of XC functionals (from generalized gradient corrected (GGA) to hybrid and range-separated functionals), while significant variance is found for charge transfer energies predicted by different XC functionals. Since GGA and hybrid XC functionals predict the most and least attractive charge transfer energies, respectively, the large variance is likely due to the delocalization error. In this scenario, the hybrid XC functionals are then expected to provide the most accurate charge transfer energies. The sum of Pauli repulsion and dispersion energies are the most varied among the XC functionals, but it is found that a correspondence between the interaction energy and the ALMO EDA total frozen energy may be used to determine accurate estimates for these contributions. </p> </div> </div> </div>

A tetramer model was investigated of a remarkably stable iodine-containing supramolecular capsule that was most recently characterized by other authors, who described emergent features of the capsule’s formation. In an attempt to address the surprising fact that no strong pair-wise interactions between any of the respective components were experimentally detected in condensed phases, the DFT (density-functional theory) computational model was used to decompose the total stabilization energy as a sum of two-, three- and four-body contributions. This model considers complexes formed between either iodine or bromine and the crucial D4h-symmetric form of octaaryl macrocyclic compound cyclo[8](1,3-(4,6-dimethyl)benzene that is surrounded by arenes of a suitable size, namely, either corannulene or coronene. A significant enthalpic gain associated with the formation of investigated tetramers was revealed. Furthermore, it is shown that the total stabilization of these complexes is dominated by binary interactions. Based on these findings, comments are made regarding the experimentally observed behavior of related multicomponent mixtures.

We derive a simplified Bethe–Salpeter equation for calculating optical absorption based on the assumption of a local electron–hole interaction. The original four-point equation for the kernel is reduced to a two-point one. A connection to the exchange–correlation kernel in time-dependent density functional theory can be established. The resulting fxc is found to be -W/2 where W contains only the short-range (local) part of the Coulomb screened interaction. This simple approximation was successfully applied to optical absorption spectra of some excitonic crystals, reproducing not only the continuum excitons but also the bound ones.

In this work, we systematically studied the structural, electronic, magnetic, mechanical and thermodynamic properties of the fully compensated spin-gapless inverse Heusler Ti2MnAl compound under pressure strain condition by applying the first-principles calculation based on density functional theory and the quasi-harmonic Debye model. The obtained structural, electronic and magnetic behaviors without pressure are well consistent with previous studies. It is found that the spin-gapless characteristic is destroyed at 20 GPa and then restored with further increase in pressure. While, the fully compensated ferromagnetism shows a better resistance against the pressure up to 30 GPa and then becomes to non-magnetism at higher pressure. Tetragonal distortion has also been investigated and it is found the spin-gapless property is only destroyed when c/a is less than 1 at 95% volume. Three independent elastic constants and various moduli have been calculated and they all show increasing tendency with pressure increase. Additionally, the pressure effects on the thermodynamic properties under different temperature have been studied, including the normalized volume, thermal expansion coefficient, heat capacity at constant volume, Grüneisen constant and Debye temperature. Overall, this theoretical study presents a detailed analysis of the physical properties’ variation under strain condition from different aspects on Ti2MnAl and, thus, can provide a helpful reference for the future work and even inspire some new studies and lead to some insight on the application of this material.

The thermodynamic properties of tetragonal CaSiO3 perovskite are predicted at high pressures and temperatures using the Debye model for the first time. This model combines the ab initio calculations within local density approximation using pseudopotentials and a plane wave basis in the framework of density functional theory, and it takes into account the phononic effects within the quasi-harmonic approximation. It is found that the calculated equation of state is in excellent agreement with the observed values at ambient condition. Based on the first-principles study and the Debye model, the thermal properties including the Debye temperature, the heat capacity, the thermal expansion and the entropy are obtained in the whole pressure range from 0 to 150 GPa and temperature range from 0 to 2000 K.

The structure stability, mechanical properties and electronic structures of B2 phase FeAl intermetallic compounds and FeAl ternary alloys containing V, Cr or Ni were investigated using first-principles density functional theory calculations. Several models are established. The total energies, cohesive energies, lattice constants, elastic constants, density of states, and the charge densities of Fe8Al8 and Fe8XAl7 ( X=V, Cr, Ni ) are calculated. The stable crystal structures of alloy systems are determined due to the cohesive energy results. The calculated lattice contants of Fe-Al-X ( X= V, Cr, Ni) were found to be related to the atomic radii of the alloy elements. The calculation and analysis of the elastic constants showed that ductility of FeAl alloys was improved by the addition of V, Cr or Ni, the improvement was the highest when Cr was used. The order of the ductility was as follows: Fe8CrAl7 > Fe8NiAl7 > Fe8VAl7 > Fe8Al8. The results of electronic structure analysis showed that FeAl were brittle, mainly due to the orbital hybridization of the s, p and d state electron of Fe and the s and p state electrons of Al, showing typical characteristics of a valence bond. Micro-mechanism for improving ductility of FeAl is that d orbital electron of alloying element is maily involved in hybridization of FeAl, alloying element V, Cr and Ni decrease the directional property in bonding of FeAl.
