This paper describes an innovative machine learning (ML) model to predict the performance of different metal oxide photocatalysts on a wide range of contaminants. The molecular structures of metal oxide photocatalysts are encoded with a crystal graph convolution neural network (CGCNN). The structure of organic compounds is encoded via digital molecular fingerprints (MF). The encoded features of the photocatalysts and contaminants are input to an artificial neural network (ANN), named as CGCNN-MF-ANN model. The CGCNN-MF-ANN model has achieved a very good prediction of the photocatalytic degradation rate constants by different photocatalysts over a wide range of organic contaminants. The effects of the data training strategy on the ML model performance are compared. The effects of different factors on photocatalytic degradation performance are further evaluated by feature importance analyses. Examples are illustrated on the use of this novel ML model for optimal photocatalyst selection and for assessing other types of photocatalysts for different environmental applications.

Abstract Conventional physics-based or experimental-based approaches for gas turbine combustion tuning are time consuming and cost intensive. Recent advances in data analytics provide an alternative method. In this paper, we present a cross-disciplinary study on the combustion tuning of an F-class gas turbine that combines machine learning with physics understanding. An artificial-neural-network-based (ANN) model is developed to predict the combustion performance (outputs), including NOx emissions, combustion dynamics, combustor vibrational acceleration, and turbine exhaust temperature. The inputs of the ANN model are identified by analyzing the key operating variables that impact the combustion performance, such as the pilot and the premixed fuel flow, and the inlet guide vane angle. The ANN model is trained by field data from an F-class gas turbine power plant. The trained model is able to describe the combustion performance at an acceptable accuracy in a wide range of operating conditions. In combination with the genetic algorithm, the model is applied to optimize the combustion performance of the gas turbine. Results demonstrate that the data-driven method offers a promising alternative for combustion tuning at a low cost and fast turn-around.

Reinforced concrete – steel plate composite shear walls (RCSPSW) have attracted great interests in the construction of tall buildings. From the perspective of life-cycle maintenance, the failure mode recognition is critical in determining the post-earthquake recovery strategies. This paper presents a comprehensive study on a wide range of existing experimental tests and develops a unique library of 17 parameters that affects RCSPSW’s failure modes. A total of 127 specimens are compiled and three types of failure modes are considered: flexure, shear and flexure-shear failure modes. Various machine learning (ML) techniques such as decision trees, random forests (RF), K-nearest neighbours and artificial neural network (ANN) are adopted to identify the failure mode of RCSPSW. RF and ANN algorithm show superior performance as compared to other ML approaches. In Particular, ANN model with one hidden layer and 10 neurons is sufficient for failure mode recognition of RCSPSW.

The field of biosciences have advanced to a larger extent and have generated large amounts of information from Electronic Health Records. This have given rise to the acute need of knowledge generation from this enormous amount of data. Data mining methods and machine learning play a major role in this aspect of biosciences. Chronic Kidney Disease(CKD) is a condition in which the kidneys are damaged and cannot filter blood as they always do. A family history of kidney diseases or failure, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes may lead to CKD. This is a lasting damage to the kidney and chances of getting worser by time is high. The very common complications that results due to a kidney failure are heart diseases, anemia, bone diseases, high potasium and calcium. The worst case situation leads to complete kidney failure and necessitates kidney transplant to live. An early detection of CKD can improve the quality of life to a greater extent. This calls for good prediction algorithm to predict CKD at an earlier stage . Literature shows a wide range of machine learning algorithms employed for the prediction of CKD. This paper uses data preprocessing, data transformation and various classifiers to predict CKD and also proposes best Prediction framework for CKD. The results of the framework show promising results of better prediction at an early stage of CKD

Abstract Thermal load prediction is a key part of energy system management and control in buildings, and its accuracy plays a critical role to improve building energy performance and efficiency. Regarding thermal load prediction, various types of prediction model have been considered and studied, such as physics-based, statistical, and machine learning models. Physical models can be accurate but require extended lead time for model development. Statistical models are relatively simple to develop and require less computation time, but they may not provide accurate results for complex energy systems with intricate nonlinear dynamic behaviors. This study proposes an artificial neural network (ANN) model, one of the prevalent machine learning methods to predict building thermal load, combining with the concept of nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous inputs (NARX). NARX-ANN prediction model is distinguished from typical ANN models because the NARX concept can address nonlinear system behaviors effectively based on its recurrent architectures and time indexing features. To examine the suitability and validity of NARX-ANN model for building thermal load prediction, a case study is carried out using the field data of an academic campus building at Mississippi State University (MSU). Results show that the proposed NARX-ANN model can provide an accurate and robust prediction performance and effectively address nonlinear system behaviors in the prediction.

Abstract Cultivators are always curious about the factors affecting yield in plant production. Determining these factors can provide information about the yield in the future. The reliability of information is dependent on a good prediction model. According to the operating process, artificial neural networks imitate the neural network in humans. The ability to make predictions for the current situation by combining the information people have gained from different experiences is designed in artificial neural networks. Therefore, in complex problems, it gives better results than artificial neural networks. In this study, we used an artificial neural network method to model the production of cotton. From a comprehensive datum collection spanning 73 farms in Diyarbakır, Turkey, the mean cotton production was 559.19 kg da-1. There are four factors that are selected as pivotal inputs into this model. As a result, the ultimate ANN model is able to forshow cotton production, which is built on elements such as farm states (cotton area and irrigation periodicity), machinery usage and fertilizer consumption. At the end of the study, cotton yield was estimated with 84% accuracy.

The compressive deformation experiments of 2124-T851 aluminum alloy were carried out over a wide range of temperature and strain rate. An artificial neural network (ANN) model is developed for the analysis and simulation of the correlation between the flow behaviors of hot compressed 2124-T851 aluminum alloy and working conditions. The input parameters of the model consist of strain rate, forming temperature and deformation degree whereas flow stress is the output. A three layer feed-forward network with 15 neurons in a single hidden layer and back propagation (BP) learning algorithm has been employed. Good performance of the ANN model is achieved. The predicted results are consistent with what is expected from fundamental theory of hot compression deformation, which indicates that the excellent capability of the developed ANN model to predict the flow stress level, the strain hardening and flow softening stages is well evidenced.
