Oscillations, including chaotic ones, can spontaneously appear in chemical reactors or lean premixed combustors. Such behavior of the system is undesirable and should be identified at the stage of its modeling. This article analyzes the behavior of reverse-flow tubular chemical reactor with longitudinal dispersion in terms of chaotic oscillations. The purpose of using reverse flow is to increase the conversion degree. For the analysis of the reactor, among others, spectral analysis, entropy, and bifurcation analysis were used. The obtained results show the chaotic behavior of the reactor in a wide range of changes in the parameter’s values.

Abstract To stabilise the periodic operation of a chemical reactor the oscillation period should be determined precisely in real time. The method discussed in the paper is based on adaptive sampling of the state variable with the use of chaotic mapping to itself. It enables precise determination of the oscillation period in real time and could be used for a proper control system, that can successfully control the process of chemical reaction and maintain the oscillation period at a set level. The method was applied to a tank reactor and tubular reactor with recycle.

Nonlinear self-excited oscillations are usually investigated for two-dimensional models. We extend the simplest and best known of these models, the van der Pol oscillator, to a three-dimensional one and study its dynamical behaviour by methods of bifurcation analysis. We find cusps and other local codimension 2 bifurcations. A homoclinic (i.e. global) bifurcation plays an important role in the bifurcation diagram. Finally it is demonstrated that chaos sets in. Thus the system belongs to the few three-dimensional autonomous ones modelling physical situations which lead to chaotic behavior.

In this study, the performance of a fixed–bed tubular reactor for the production of phthalic anhydride is mathematically analyzed. The conversion degree and reactor temperature values are compared with the measured one in a tubular reactor applied in Farabi petrochemical unit in Iran as well as reported data in the literature for a pilot plate. The comparisons are satisfactory. The effects of some operating parameters including reactor length, feed temperature, reactor pressure, and existence of an inert in the catalytic bed are investigated. The optimum value of each parameter is determined on the basis of the corresponding operating conditions.

Recently, there are many methods for constructing multi-wing/multi-scroll or hyperchaotic attractors; however, it has been noticed that the attractors with both multi-wing topological structure and hyperchaotic characteristic rarely exist. A new chaotic system, obtained by making the change on coordinate to the Hu chaotic system, can generate very complex attractors with four-wing topological structure and three positive Lyapunov exponents over a wide range of parameters. The influence of parameters varying to system dynamics is analyzed, computer simulations and bifurcation analysis is also verified in this paper.

PurposeThis paper presents a novel concept for design of concrete support system for chemical reactors used in refineries and petrochemical plants. Graphical method is described that can be used to size the concrete base and piling system. Recommendations are also provided to optimize the parameters required for the design. The procedure is illustrated for design of two reactor models commonly used in gas recovery units.Design/methodology/approachDesign space representation for the foundation system is described for chemical reactors with variable heights. The key points of the design graph are extracted from the numerical finite element models. The reactor load is idealized at discrete points to transfer the loads to the piles. Bilateral spring system is used to model the soil restrains.FindingsThe graphical approach is economical and provides the design engineer the flexibility to select the foundation parameters from wide range of options.Practical implicationsThe concept presented in the paper can be utilized by engineers in the industry for design of chemical reactors. It must be noted that little guidelines are currently available in practice addressing the structural design aspects.Originality/valueA novel concept is presented in this paper based on significant industrial design experience of reactor supports. Using the described method leads to significant cost savings in material quantity and engineering time.

Bendiocarb (BEN) is an acutely toxic carbamate insecticide which used in public places and agriculture, it is also effective against a wide range of nuisance and disease vector insects. A new rapid and sensitive reverse flow injection spectrophotometric procedure coupled with on-line solid-phase reactor is designed in this article for the determination of BEN in its insecticidal formulations and water samples, by using three different solid-phase reactors containing bulk PbO2 (B-SPR), PbO2 nanoparticles (N-SPR) and grafted nanoparticles of SiO2-PbO2 (G-SPR) immobilized on cellulose acetate matrix (CA). This method of oxidative coupling is based on alkaline hydrolysis of the BEN pesticide, and then coupled with N,N dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine sulphate (DMPD) to give a blue color product which measured at λmax 675 nm. It worth to mentioned that under optimal conditions, Beer’s law is obeyed in the range of 1-175 μg mL-1 for B-SPR and 0.25-70 μg mL-1 of BEN for both N-SPR and G-SPR respectively within limit of detection (LOD) of 0.931, 0.234 and 0.210 μg mL-1 for B-SPR N-SPR and G-SPR respectively. The surface methodology of the solid phase was also investigated by using atomic force microscopy.

The interactions between chemical reactions and transport may be divided into direct effects, for example on the molecular level, and indirect effects, for example those arising from the geometrical configuration of the integrated reactor/exchanger. Attention herein is focused on the latter, although in many instances the direct effects must be accounted for as well. Particular attention is given to the identification of behavior that does not arise in chemical reactors not connected to an exchanger or in exchangers not connected to a chemical reactor, as well as to optimal conditions and configurations of combined reactors and exchangers. Generalizations are difficult to formulate for such complex behavior and equipment, necessitating a primary reliance on illustrative examples. However, some general conclusions are drawn concerning the occurrence, identification, and performance of interactive designs.

In this paper fully developed turbulent flows of Newtonian fluid in cylindrical annulus with eccentricity and rotating inner cylinder has been systematically studied. Modeling has been performed on the base of Menter Shear Transport model of turbulence in a wide range of Reynolds numbers, eccentricity, and radii ratio. As the result dependencies of flow field and pressure drop along the channel on geometrical and flow parameters have been found. It was shown that flow characteristics and dependence of the pressure drop are determined by which flow axial or rotational dominates and caused generation of turbulence. When rotational flow dominates the dependence of the pressure drop is almost linear. When axial flow dominates rotation practically has no impact on the pressure drop in concentric annulus. Appearance of the reverse flow in eccentric channel has a major impact on the pressure drop. In case when rotational flow dominates, appearance of the reverse flow is accompanied by threshold flow restructuring at some critical value of eccentricity. A correlation for determination of the pressure drop in various regimes has been developed for the case of concentric annulus

The normal contractile, electrical, and energetic function of the heart depends on the synchronization of biological oscillators and signal integrators that make up cellular signaling networks. In this review we interpret experimental data from molecular, cellular, and transgenic models of cardiac signaling behavior in the context of established concepts in cell network architecture and organization. Focusing on the cellular Ca2+ handling machinery, we describe how the plasticity and adaptability of normal Ca2+ signaling is dependent on dynamic network configurations that operate across a wide range of functional states. We consider how (mal)adaptive changes in signaling pathways restrict the dynamic range of the network such that it cannot respond appropriately to physiologic stimuli or perturbation. Based on these concepts, a model is proposed in which pathologic abnormalities in cardiac rhythm and contractility (e.g., arrhythmias and heart failure) arise as a consequence of progressive desynchronization and reduction in the dynamic range of the Ca2+ signaling network. We discuss how a systems-level understanding of the network organization, cellular noise, and chaotic behavior may inform the design of new therapeutic modalities that prevent or reverse the disease-linked unraveling of the Ca2+ signaling network.
