We used sol-gel and spin-coating in the original configuration of a liquid deposition process to synthesize particularly thin ZnO films (<100 nm) with nano-granular morphology, high grain orientation and variable optical properties. The concentration of the zinc salt, the concentration of the chelating agent, the nature of the solvent and the substrate material have been identified as key parameters that determine the microstructure of the deposited layer and thus its final properties. The thorough and practical examination of the effects of the synthesis parameters evidenced a three-step growth mechanism for these ZnO thin films: (i) a reaction of precursors, (ii) a formation of nuclei, and (iii) a coalescence of nanoparticles under thermal annealing. The growth of these very thin films is thus conditioned by the interaction between the liquid phase and the substrate especially during the initial steps of the spin coating process. Such thin ZnO films with such nano-granular morphology may be of great interest in various applications, especially those requiring a large active surface area.

ZnO thin films with and without Ni-doping were successfully deposited by sol-gel method with zinc acetate dihydrate as inorganic precursor, and nickel (II) acetate tetrahydrate as dopant. The solutions were prepared by dissolving zinc acetate and nickel (II) acetate in ethanol and diethanolamine (DEA) as its chelating agent. Thin films were fabricated by using spin-coating method on glass substrates. ZnO films were obtained by pre-heating and post-heating at 300 °C for 10 minutes and 500 °C for 1 h respectively. The films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis transmittance and photoluminescence (PL). All samples exhibit high transparency in visible. Ni dopant does not alter so much ZnO structure, which due to the ion substitution between Ni and Zn. However, the Ni tends to create a dopant energy interlayer in ZnO energy band gap which cause significant change in PL intensity.

The effect of annealing temperatures on the Zinc Oxide (ZnO) thin films properties has been investigated. 1.0 M ZnO solution was prepared by sol-gel method as coating solution for ZnO thin films deposition process. The thin films deposition was conducted by spin-coating technique on the silicon and glass substrates. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images reveal the evolution of ZnO surface morphology with annealing temperatures. The crystallinity improvement occurred at higher annealing temperature as shown by x-ray diffraction (XRD) result. The optical properties found to be varied at different annealing temperatures. The current-voltage (I-V) measurement results suggested the improvement of ZnO thin film electrical properties with annealing temperatures.

This study investigated the structure, microstructure and optical properties of the highly-oriented lead barium titanate (Pb1-xBaxTiO3, PBT) thin films prepared on MgO (100) substrate by a nonaqueous sol-gel process. The film precursor was synthesized by the modified sol-gel processing from lead acetate, barium acetate, and titanium isopropoxide, acetylacetone as chelating agent, and ethylene glycol as solvent. This stable precursor was formed by acetylacetone chelating with titanium isopropoxide and then mixing the solution of the acetates. The spin-coating technique was used to deposit the PBT films on MgO (100) substrate with different barium contents and various spin-coating numbers, respectively. X-ray diffraction was employed to study the crystal structure of the thin film and field emission scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the microstructure of the films. Optical properties of the thin films were investigated by Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer. All films exhibited a (100) preferred orientation, especially the PB0.5T (3-coating layers) thin film. In the optical properties, the adsorption wavelength shifted to the ultraviolet region with increasing barium.

AbstractZinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were deposited on Si (1 0 0) and glass substrates by sol-gel spin coating technique. Zinc acetate dihydrate, monoethanolamine and isopropanol were used as the sources for precursor solution and the resulting gel was used for the preparation of ZnO thin films. The films were annealed at different temperatures (100 °C to 500 °C) and the effect of annealing on the structural and optical properties was investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV-Vis spectroscopy were used for the analysis of the films. The XRD results indicated the polycrystalline hexagonal structure of the ZnO films with (0 0 2) orientation. The optical properties of the films were studied using UV-Vis spectrophotometer in the wavelength range of 190 – 1100 nm. The optical characterization of the ZnO thin films showed the high transmittance of ~90 % for the films annealed at 400 °C. The films showed the absorbance ~360 – 390 nm and bandgap values of 3.40 – 3.10 eV, depending on the annealing temperature of the films.

This paper presents the investigation of the thickness of the ZnO thin films by varying the number of deposition layers during the spin coating deposition process. ZnO thin films were deposited with a different number of layers (ranging from 1, 3, and 5), and the main purpose of this study is to explore the effect of the thickness on the properties of ZnO thin films. The deposited thin films were characterised using field emission scanning electron microscope, surface profilometer, and X-ray diffraction. From the characterisation results, the morphology of the ZnO thin films changed significantly with the number of layers and their thickness value. As expected, the thickness increased as the number of layers increased. The crystalline quality of the deposited film improved as the thickness increased. A change in crystallographic orientation was also observed in which the thicker, thin films showed crystal growth in the (102) direction, whereas the thinner one was in the (101) direction. A slight increase in crystallite size for dominant orientation also was observed with the increase of film thickness.

Background: In this work, CdS thin films were synthesized by sol-gel method (spin coating technique) on glass substrates to investigate the optical behavior of the film. Methods: Different substrate spin coating speeds of 2400, 3000, 3600 rpm and different Ni dopant concentrations of 0 wt.%, 2.5 wt.%, 5 wt.%) were investigated. The optical properties of thin films such as refraction index, extinction coefficient, dielectric constant and optical band gap energy of the layers were discussed using spectroscopic ellipsometry method in the wavelength range of 300 to 900 nm. Results: It can be deduced that substrate rotation speed and dopant concentration has influenced the optical properties of thin films. By decreasing rotation speed of the substrate which results in films with more thicknesses, more optical interferences were appeared in the results. Conclusion: The samples doped with Ni comparing to pure ones have had more optical band gap energy.
