A general framework describing the statistical discrimination of an ensemble of quantum channels is given by the name quantum reading. Several tools can be applied in quantum reading to reduce the error probability in distinguishing the ensemble of channels. Classical and quantum codes can be envisioned for this goal. The aim of this paper is to present a simple but fruitful protocol for this task using classical error-correcting codes. Three families of codes are considered: Reed–Solomon codes, BCH codes, and Reed–Muller codes. In conjunction with the use of codes, we also analyze the role of the receiver. In particular, heterodyne and Dolinar receivers are taken into consideration. The encoding and measurement schemes are connected by the probing step. As probes, we consider coherent states. In such a simple manner, interesting results are obtained. As we show, there is a threshold below which using codes surpass optimal and sophisticated schemes for any fixed rate and code. BCH codes in conjunction with Dolinar receiver turn out to be the optimal strategy for error mitigation in quantum reading.

This paper concentrates on construction of new nonbinary quantum error-correcting codes (QECCs) from three classes of narrow-sense imprimitive BCH codes over finite field [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text] is an odd prime power). By a careful analysis on properties of cyclotomic cosets in defining set [Formula: see text] of these BCH codes, the improved maximal designed distance of these narrow-sense imprimitive Hermitian dual-containing BCH codes is determined to be much larger than the result given according to Aly et al. [S. A. Aly, A. Klappenecker and P. K. Sarvepalli, IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 53, 1183 (2007)] for each different code length. Thus families of new nonbinary QECCs are constructed, and the newly obtained QECCs have larger distance than those in previous literature.

Quantum error correcting codes (QECCs) play an important role in preventing quantum information decoherence. Good quantum stabilizer codes were constructed by classical error correcting codes. In this paper, Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem (BCH) codes over finite fields are used to construct quantum codes. First, we try to find such classical BCH codes, which contain their dual codes, by studying the suitable cyclotomic cosets. Then, we construct nonbinary quantum BCH codes with given parameter sets. Finally, a new family of quantum BCH codes can be realized by Steane’s enlargement of nonbinary Calderbank-Shor-Steane (CSS) construction and Hermitian construction. We have proven that the cyclotomic cosets are good tools to study quantum BCH codes. The defining sets contain the highest numbers of consecutive integers. Compared with the results in the references, the new quantum BCH codes have better code parameters without restrictions and better lower bounds on minimum distances. What is more, the new quantum codes can be constructed over any finite fields, which enlarges the range of quantum BCH codes.

AbstractMany regions around the world are experiencing an increase in climate-related shocks, such as drought. This poses serious threats to farming activities and has major implications for sustaining rural livelihoods and food security. Farmers’ ability to respond to and withstand the increasing incidence of drought events needs to be strengthened and their resilience enhanced. Implementation of measures to enhance resilience is determined by decisions of farmers and it is important to understand the reasons behind their behavior. We assessed the viability of measures to enhance resilience of farmers to drought, by developing a general framework that covers economic-technical and psychological-cognitive aspects, here summarized under the terms (1) motivation and (2) feasibility. The conceptual framework was applied to cocoa farmers in Ghana and tef farmers in Ethiopia by using questionnaire-based surveys. A portfolio of five specific measures to build resilience (i.e., irrigation, shade trees, fire belts, bookkeeping, mulching, early mature varieties, weather forecast, reduced tillage, improved harvesting) in each country was evaluated with a closed-ended questionnaire that covered the various aspects of motivation and feasibility whereby farmers were asked to (dis)agree on a 5-point Likert scale. The results show that if the motivation mean score is increased by 0.1 units, the probability of implementation increases by 16.9% in Ghana and by 7.7% in Ethiopia. If the feasibility mean score is increased by 0.1 units, the probability of implementation increases by 24.9% in Ghana and by 11.9% in Ethiopia. We can conclude that motivation and feasibility matter, and we improve our understanding of measure implementation if we include both feasibility and motivation into viability assessments.

In this paper, we discuss two problems on asymmetric quantum error-correcting codes (AQECCs). The first one is on the construction of a [[12, 1, 5/3]]2 asymmetric quantum code, we show an impure [[12, 1, 5/3 ]]2 exists. The second one is on the construction of AQECCs from binary cyclic codes, we construct many families of new asymmetric quantum codes with dz> δ max +1 from binary primitive cyclic codes of length n = 2m-1, where δ max = 2⌈m/2⌉-1 is the maximal designed distance of dual containing narrow sense BCH code of length n = 2m-1. A number of known codes are special cases of the codes given here. Some of these AQECCs have parameters better than the ones available in the literature.

The volume contains six contributions (and an introduction) that have been presented in the Thomas Paine Second International Conference held in Paris Ouest Nanterre in 2014. All scholars involved in the field of research of Atlantic history agree on the fact that the partitioning between ‘national’ historiographies (American, English and French) is detrimental in the understanding of the role of specific transatlantic actors, of which Thomas Paine is one the most spectacular example for the era of the revolutions (1760–1830). This conference gathered American, British and French historians to develop this fruitful approach. The papers presented here participate in the historiographic opening up of studies on Thomas Paine and propose studies, reflexion and specific comments on how Thomas Paine converges within the general framework of Atlantic history and Republicanism history.

<span>BCH codes represent an important class of cyclic error-correcting codes; their minimum distances are known only for some cases and remains an open NP-Hard problem in coding theory especially for large lengths. This paper presents an efficient scheme ZSSMP (Zimmermann Special Stabilizer Multiplier Permutation) to find the true value of the minimum distance for many large BCH codes. The proposed method consists in searching a codeword having the minimum weight by Zimmermann algorithm in the sub codes fixed by special stabilizer multiplier permutations. These few sub codes had very small dimensions compared to the dimension of the considered code itself and therefore the search of a codeword of global minimum weight is simplified in terms of run time complexity.  ZSSMP is validated on all BCH codes of length 255 for which it gives the exact value of the minimum distance. For BCH codes of length 511, the proposed technique passes considerably the famous known powerful scheme of Canteaut and Chabaud used to attack the public-key cryptosystems based on codes. ZSSMP is very rapid and allows catching the smallest weight codewords in few seconds. By exploiting the efficiency and the quickness of ZSSMP, the true minimum distances and consequently the error correcting capability of all the set of 165 BCH codes of length up to 1023 are determined except the two cases of the BCH(511,148) and BCH(511,259) codes. The comparison of ZSSMP with other powerful methods proves its quality for attacking the hardness of minimum weight search problem at least for the codes studied in this paper.</span>

Foram estudados conceitos como Marketing, Mix de Marketing, promoção/comunicação, mídia de massa e novas mídias, além do impacto causado pela tecnologia. A análise dessas informações permitiu traçar um quadro geral com as principais características de ambas as categorias de mídias e os fatores que contribuíram para essa evolução, além de avaliar os desafios para a comunicação em Marketing. As novas mídias exigiram uma mudança no papel e no pensamento do Marketing, já que a comunicação impessoal cedeu espaço para a interatividade. E cabe aqui destacar que a área de Marketing está se esforçando para acompanhar essas mudanças.  The purpose of this article is to analyze, based on the gathering of articles and bibliographies of the area, the evolutive aspects and the role of communication in marketing with the emergence of new media. Concepts such as Marketing, Marketing Mix, promotion/ communication, mass media and new media were studied, as well as the impact caused by technology. The analysis of this information allowed to chart a general framework with the main characteristics of both categories of media and the factors that contributed to this evolution, besides evaluating the challenges for communication in Marketing. The new media required a change in the role and thinking of Marketing, since impersonal communication gave way to interactivity. And it should be noted here that the Marketing area is striving to keep up with these changes.

Error probability distribution associated with a given Clifford measurement circuit is described exactly in terms of the circuit error-equivalence group, or the circuit subsystem code previously introduced by Bacon, Flammia, Harrow, and Shi. This gives a prescription for maximum-likelihood decoding with a given measurement circuit. Marginal distributions for subsets of circuit errors are also analyzed; these generate a family of related asymmetric LDPC codes of varying degeneracy. More generally, such a family is associated with any quantum code. Implications for decoding highly-degenerate quantum codes are discussed.
