Today, research trends clearly confirm the fact that machine learning technologies open up new opportunities in various computing environments, such as Internet of Things, mobile, and enterprise. Unfortunately, the prior efforts rarely focused on designing system-level input/output stacks (e.g., page cache, file system, block input/output, and storage devices). In this paper, we propose a new page replacement algorithm, called ML-CLOCK, that embeds single-layer perceptron neural network algorithms to enable an intelligent eviction policy. In addition, ML-CLOCK employs preference rules that consider the features of the underlying storage media (e.g., asymmetric read and write costs and efficient write patterns). For evaluation, we implemented a prototype of ML-CLOCK based on trace-driven simulation and compared it with the traditional four replacement algorithms and one flash-friendly algorithm. Our experimental results on the trace-driven environments clearly confirm that ML-CLOCK can improve the hit ratio by up to 72% and reduces the elapsed time by up to 2.16x compared with least frequently used replacement algorithms.

Spiking neural networks (SNN) offer a power efficient, biologically plausible learning paradigm by encoding information into spikes. The discovery of the memristor has accelerated the progress of spiking neuromorphic systems, as the intrinsic plasticity of the device makes it an ideal candidate to mimic a biological synapse. Despite providing a nanoscale form factor, non-volatility, and low-power operation, memristors suffer from device-level non-idealities, which impact system-level performance. To address these issues, this article presents a memristive crossbar-based neuromorphic system using unsupervised learning with twin-memristor synapses, fully digital pulse width modulated spike-timing-dependent plasticity, and homeostasis neurons. The implemented single-layer SNN was applied to a pattern-recognition task of classifying handwritten-digits. The performance of the system was analyzed by varying design parameters such as number of training epochs, neurons, and capacitors. Furthermore, the impact of memristor device non-idealities, such as device-switching mismatch, aging, failure, and process variations, were investigated and the resilience of the proposed system was demonstrated.

We present the research findings of the DOE-funded Hydrogen Storage Engineering Center of Excellence (HSECoE) related to liquid-phase and slurry-phase chemical hydrogen storage media and their potential as future hydrogen storage media for automotive applications. Chemical hydrogen storage media other than neat liquid compositions will prove difficult to meet the DOE system level targets. Solid- and slurry-phase chemical hydrogen storage media requiring off-board regeneration are impractical and highly unlikely to be implemented for automotive applications because of the formidable task of developing solid- or slurry-phase transport systems that are commercially reliable and economical throughout the entire life cycle of the fuel. Additionally, the regeneration cost and efficiency of chemical hydrogen storage media is currently the single most prohibitive barrier to implementing chemical hydrogen storage media. Ideally, neat liquid-phase chemical hydrogen storage media with net-usable gravimetric hydrogen capacities of greater than 7.8 wt% are projected to meet the 2017 DOE system level gravimetric and volumetric targets. The research presented herein is a collection of research findings that do not in and of themselves warrant a dedicated manuscript. However, the collection of results do, in fact, highlight the engineering challenges and short-comings in scaling up and demonstrating fluid-phase ammonia borane and alane compositions that all future materials researchers working in hydrogen storage should be aware of.

The optimization for hardware processor and system for performing deep learning operations such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) in resource limited embedded devices are recent active research area. In order to perform an optimized deep neural network model using the limited computational unit and memory of an embedded device, it is necessary to quickly apply various configurations of hardware modules to various deep neural network models and find the optimal combination. The Electronic System Level (ESL) Simulator based on SystemC is very useful for rapid hardware modeling and verification. In this paper, we designed and implemented a Deep Learning Accelerator (DLA) that performs Deep Neural Network (DNN) operation based on the RISC-V Virtual Platform implemented in SystemC in order to enable rapid and diverse analysis of deep learning operations in an embedded device based on the RISC-V processor, which is a recently emerging embedded processor. The developed RISC-V based DLA prototype can analyze the hardware requirements according to the CNN data set through the configuration of the CNN DLA architecture, and it is possible to run RISC-V compiled software on the platform, can perform a real neural network model like Darknet. We performed the Darknet CNN model on the developed DLA prototype, and confirmed that computational overhead and inference errors can be analyzed with the DLA prototype developed by analyzing the DLA architecture for various data sets.

The fault diagnosis of electrical control system of certain type mine sweeping vehicle is difficult due to its complex structure and advanced technique. So in the multi-sensor failure diagnosis process, as a result of various reasons, such as the existence of measurement noise, diagnosis knowledge incomplete and so on, it makes the fault diagnosis uncertainty and affects the reliability and the accuracy of the diagnosis result. This article according to the analysis of electrical control system's fault characteristic of the mine sweeping plough’s, proposes a technique based on data fusion fault diagnosis method. The diagnosis process is divided into the sub system and the system-level, the subsystem uses the BP neural network to classify the fault mode, the system-level uses the D-S evidence theory carries on the comprehensive decision judgment for the whole system's fault. Application shows if some sub-neural network diagnosis has error, using D-S evidence theory fusion can effectively improve the accuracy of diagnosis.

Image retrieval is an important system for retrieving similar images by searching and browsing in a large database. The image retrieval system can be a reliable tool for people to optimize the use of image accumulation, and finding efficient methods to retrieve images is very important. Recent decades have marked increased research interest in field image retrieval. To retrieve the images, an important set of features is used. In this work, a combination of methods was used to examine all the images and detect images in a database according to a query image. Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) was used for feature extraction of the images into the dataset. The images in the database were processed by extracting their important and robust features and storing them in the feature store. Likewise, the strong features were extracted for specific query images. By using some Meta Heuristic algorithms such as Cuckoo Search (CS), Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), and using an artificial neural network such as single-layer Perceptron Neural Network (PNN), similarity was evaluated. It also proposed a new two method by hybridized PNN and CS with fuzzy logic to produce a new method called Fuzzy Single Layer Perceptron Neural Network (FPNN), and Fuzzy Cuckoo Search to examine the similarity between features for query images and features for images in the database. The efficiency of the system methods was evaluated by calculating the precision recall value of the results. The proposed method of FCS outperformed other methods such as (PNN), (ACO), (CS), and (FPNN) in terms of precision and image recall.
