The paper presents a new memetic, cluster-based methodology for image registration in case of geometric perturbation model involving translation, rotation and scaling. The methodology consists of two stages. First, using the sets of the object pixels belonging to the target image and to the sensed image respectively, the boundaries of the search space are computed. Next, the registration mechanism residing in a hybridization between a version of firefly population-based search procedure and the two membered evolutionary strategy computed on clustered data is applied. In addition, a procedure designed to deal with the premature convergence problem is embedded. The fitness to be maximized by the memetic algorithm is defined by the Dice coefficient, a function implemented to evaluate the similarity between pairs of binary images. The proposed methodology is applied on both binary and monochrome images. In case of monochrome images, a preprocessing step aiming the binarization of the inputs is considered before the registration. The quality of the proposed approach is measured in terms of accuracy and efficiency. The success rate based on Dice coefficient, normalized mutual information measures, and signal-to-noise ratio are used to establish the accuracy of the obtained algorithm, while the efficiency is evaluated by the run time function.

The main aim of the reported work is to solve the registration problem for recognition purposes. We introduce two new evolutionary algorithms (EA) consisting of population-based search methods, followed by or combined with a local search scheme. We used a variant of the Firefly algorithm to conduct the population-based search, while the local exploration was implemented by the Two-Membered Evolutionary Strategy (2M-ES). Both algorithms use fitness function based on mutual information (MI) to direct the exploration toward an appropriate candidate solution. A good similarity measure is the one that enables us to predict well, and with the symmetric MI we tie similarity between two objects A and B directly to how well A predicts B, and vice versa. Since the search landscape of normalized mutual information proved more amenable for evolutionary computation algorithms than simple MI, we use normalized mutual information (NMI) defined as symmetric uncertainty. The proposed algorithms are tested against the well-known Principal Axes Transformation technique (PAT), a standard evolutionary strategy and a version of the Firefly algorithm developed to align images. The accuracy and the efficiency of the proposed algorithms are experimentally confirmed by our tests, both methods being excellently fitted to registering images.

Localization is the key research area in wireless sensor networks. Finding the exact position of the node is known as localization. Different algorithms have been proposed. Here we consider a cooperative localization algorithm with censoring schemes using Crammer Rao bound (CRB). This censoring scheme  can improve the positioning accuracy and reduces computation complexity, traffic and latency. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a population based search algorithm based on the swarm intelligence like social behavior of birds, bees or a school of fishes. To improve the algorithm efficiency and localization precision, this paper presents an objective function based on the normal distribution of ranging error and a method of obtaining the search space of particles. In this paper  Distributed localization of wireless sensor networksis proposed using PSO with best censoring technique using CRB. Proposed method shows better results in terms of position accuracy, latency and complexity.

AbstractThis article proposes a novel binary version of recently developed Gaining Sharing knowledge-based optimization algorithm (GSK) to solve binary optimization problems. GSK algorithm is based on the concept of how humans acquire and share knowledge during their life span. A binary version of GSK named novel binary Gaining Sharing knowledge-based optimization algorithm (NBGSK) depends on mainly two binary stages: binary junior gaining sharing stage and binary senior gaining sharing stage with knowledge factor 1. These two stages enable NBGSK for exploring and exploitation of the search space efficiently and effectively to solve problems in binary space. Moreover, to enhance the performance of NBGSK and prevent the solutions from trapping into local optima, NBGSK with population size reduction (PR-NBGSK) is introduced. It decreases the population size gradually with a linear function. The proposed NBGSK and PR-NBGSK applied to set of knapsack instances with small and large dimensions, which shows that NBGSK and PR-NBGSK are more efficient and effective in terms of convergence, robustness, and accuracy.

This paper introduces a novel population-based bio-inspired meta-heuristic optimization algorithm, called Blood Coagulation Algorithm (BCA). BCA derives inspiration from the process of blood coagulation in the human body. The underlying concepts and ideas behind the proposed algorithm are the cooperative behavior of thrombocytes and their intelligent strategy of clot formation. These behaviors are modeled and utilized to underscore intensification and diversification in a given search space. A comparison with various state-of-the-art meta-heuristic algorithms over a test suite of 23 renowned benchmark functions reflects the efficiency of BCA. An extensive investigation is conducted to analyze the performance, convergence behavior and computational complexity of BCA. The comparative study and statistical test analysis demonstrate that BCA offers very competitive and statistically significant results compared to other eminent meta-heuristic algorithms. Experimental results also show the consistent performance of BCA in high dimensional search spaces. Furthermore, we demonstrate the applicability of BCA on real-world applications by solving several real-life engineering problems.

The Playfair cipher is a symmetric key cryptosystem-based on encryption of digrams of letters. The cipher shows higher cryptanalytic complexity compared to mono-alphabetic cipher due to the use of 625 different letter-digrams in encryption instead of 26 letters from Roman alphabets. Population-based techniques like Genetic algorithm (GA) and Swarm intelligence (SI) are more suitable compared to the Brute force approach for cryptanalysis of cipher because of specific and unique structure of its Key Table. This work is an attempt to automate the process of cryptanalysis using hybrid computational intelligence. Multiple particle swarm optimization (MPSO) and GA-based hybrid technique (MPSO-GA) have been proposed and applied in solving Playfair ciphers. The authors have attempted to find the solution key applied in generating Playfair crypts by using the proposed hybrid technique to reduce the exhaustive search space. As per the computed results of the MPSO-GA technique, correct solution was obtained for the Playfair ciphers of 100 to 200 letters length. The proposed technique provided better results compared to either GA or PSO-based technique. Furthermore, the technique was also able to recover partial English text message for short Playfair ciphers of 80 to 120 characters length.

In this paper, we introduce an extended version of artificial bee colony with a local search method (EABC) for solving the QoS uncertainty-aware web service composition (IQSC) problem, where the ambiguity of the QoS properties are represented using the interval-number model. At first, we formulate the addressed problem as an interval constrained single-objective optimization model. Then, we use the skyline operator to prune the redundant and dominated web services from their sets of functionally equivalent ones. Whereas, EABC is employed to solve the IQSC problem in a reduced search space more effectively and more efficiently. For the purpose of validation of the performance and the efficiency of the proposed approach, we present the experimental comparisons to an existing skyline-based PSO, an efficient discrete gbest-guided artificial bee colony and a recently provided Harris Hawks optimization with an elite evolutionary strategy algorithms on an interval extended version of the public QWS dataset.

Most of the engineering design problems are intrinsically complex and difficult to solve, because of diverse solution search space, complex functions, continuous and discrete nature of decision variables, multiple objectives and hard constraints. Swarm intelligence (SI) algorithms are becoming popular in dealing with these kind of complexities. The SI algorithms being population based random search techniques, use heuristics inspired from nature to enable effective exploration of optimal solutions to complex engineering problems. The SI algorithms derived based on principles of co-operative group intelligence and collective behavior of self-organized systems. This chapter presents key principles of multi-optimization, and swarm optimization for solving multi-objective engineering design problems with illustration through few examples.

Genetic algorithms (GAs) are a population-based meta-heuristic global optimization technique for dealing with complex problems with a very large search space. The population initialization is a crucial task in GAs because it plays a vital role in the convergence speed, problem search space exploration, and also the quality of the final optimal solution. Though the importance of deciding problem-specific population initialization in GA is widely recognized, it is hardly addressed in the literature. In this article, different population seeding techniques for permutation-coded genetic algorithms such as random, nearest neighbor (NN), gene bank (GB), sorted population (SP), and selective initialization (SI), along with three newly proposed ordered-distance-vector-based initialization techniques have been extensively studied. The ability of each population seeding technique has been examined in terms of a set of performance criteria, such as computation time, convergence rate, error rate, average convergence, convergence diversity, nearest-neighbor ratio, average distinct solutions and distribution of individuals. One of the famous combinatorial hard problems of the traveling salesman problem (TSP) is being chosen as the testbed and the experiments are performed on large-sized benchmark TSP instances obtained from standard TSPLIB. The scope of the experiments in this article is limited to the initialization phase of the GA and this restricted scope helps to assess the performance of the population seeding techniques in their intended phase alone. The experimentation analyses are carried out using statistical tools to claim the unique performance characteristic of each population seeding techniques and best performing techniques are identified based on the assessment criteria defined and the nature of the application.
