Terahertz (THz) band communications are considered a crucial technology to support future applications, such as ultra-high bit rate wireless local area networks, in the next generation of wireless communication systems. In this work, we consider an ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (UM-MIMO) THz communication system operating in a typical indoor scenario where the direct link between the transmitter and receiver is obstructed due to surrounding obstacles. To help establish communication, we assume the aid of a nearby reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) whose phase shifts can be adjusted. To configure the individual phase shifts of the RIS elements, we formulate the problem as a constrained achievable rate maximization. Due to the typical large dimensions of this optimization problem, we apply the accelerated proximal gradient (APG) method, which results in a low complexity algorithm that copes with the non-convex phase shift constraint through simple element-wise normalization. Our numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm even when considering realistic discrete phase shifts’ quantization and imperfect channel knowledge. Furthermore, comparison against existing alternatives reveals improvements between 30% and 120% in terms of range, for a reference rate of 100 Gbps when using the proposed approach with only 81 RIS elements.

Many communication systems are based on the Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MIMO) scheme, and Orthogonal Space–time Block Transmit diversity Coding (OSTBC), combined with Maximal Ratio Receive Combining (MRRC), to create an optimal diversity system. A system with optimal diversity fixes and optimizes the channel’s effects under multi-path and Rayleigh fading with maximum energy efficiency; however, the challenge does not end with dealing with the channel destruction of the multi-path impacts. Susceptibility to interference is a significant vulnerability in future wireless mobile networks. The 5th Generation New Radio (5G-NR) technologies bring hundreds of small cells and pieces of User Equipment (UE) per indoor or outdoor local area scenario under a specific Long Term Evolution (LTE)-based station (e-NodeB), or under 5G-NR base-station (g-NodeB). It is necessary to study issues that deal with many interference signals, and smart jammers from advanced communication equipment cause deterioration in the links between the UE, the small cells, and the NodeB. In this paper, we study and present the significant impact and performances of 2×2 Alamouti Phase-Shift Keying (PSK) modulation techniques in the presence of an interferer and a smart jammer. The destructive effects affecting the MIMO array and the advanced diversity technique without closed-loop MIMO are analyzed. The performance is evaluated in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) vs. Signal to Interference Ratio (SIR). In addition, we proved the impairment of the orthogonal spectrum assumption mathematically.

In order to apply sphere decoding algorithm in multiple-input multiple-output communication systems and to make it feasible for real-time applications, its computational complexity should be decreased. To achieve this goal, this paper provides some useful insights into the effect of initial and the final sphere radii and estimating them effortlessly. It also discusses practical ways of initiating the algorithm properly and terminating it before the normal end of the process as well as the cost of these methods. Besides, a novel algorithm is introduced which utilizes the presented techniques according to a threshold factor which is defined in terms of the number of transmit antennas and the noise variance. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm offers a desirable performance and reasonable complexity satisfying practical constraints.

Reconfigurable surfaces (RS) have recently emerged as an enabler for smart radio environments where they are used to actively tailor/control the radio propagation (e.g., to support users under adverse channel conditions). If multiple RSs are deployed (e.g., coated on various buildings) to support different groups of users, it is critical to jointly optimize the phase-shifts of all RSs to mitigate their interference as well as to leverage the secondary reflections amongst them. Motivated by the above, this paper considers the uplink transmissions of multiple users that are grouped and supported by multiple RSs to communicate with a multi-antenna base station (BS). We first formulate two optimization problems: the weighted sum-rate maximization and the minimum achievable rate (from all users) maximization. Unlike existing works that considered single user or single RS or multiple RSs without inter-RS reflections, the considered problems require one to optimize the phase-shifts of all RSs' elements and all beamformers at the multi-antenna BS. The two problems turn out to be non-convex and thus are difficult to be solved in general. Moreover, the inter-RS reflections give rise to the coupling of the phase-shifts amongst RSs, making the optimization problems even more challenging to solve. To tackle them, we design alternating optimization algorithms that provably converge to locally optimal solutions. Simulation results reveal that by properly managing interference and leveraging the secondary reflections amongst RSs, there is a great benefit of deploying more RSs to support different groups of users and so as to achieve a higher rate per user. This gain is even more significant with a larger number of elements per RS. In contrast, without properly managing the secondary reflections, increasing the number of RSs can adversely impact the network throughput, especially for higher transmit power.<br>

The hardware complexity of the analog Self-Interference (SI) canceler in conventional full duplex Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) designs mostly scales with the number of transmit and receive antennas, thus exploiting the benefits of analog cancellation becomes impractical for full duplex MIMO transceivers, even for a moderate number of antennas. In this paper, we provide an overview of two recent hardware architectures for the analog canceler comprising of reduced number of cancellation elements, compared to the state of the art, and simple multiplexers for efficient signal routing among the transceiver radio-frequency chains. The one architecture is based on analog taps and the other on AUXiliary (AUX) Transmitters (TXs). In contrast to the available analog cancellation architectures, the values for each tap or each AUX TX and the configuration of the multiplexers are jointly designed with the digital transceiver beamforming filters according to desired performance objectives. We present a general optimization framework for the joint design of analog SI cancellation and digital beamforming, and detail an example algorithmic solution for the sum-rate optimization objective. Our representative computer simulation results demonstrate the superiority, both in terms of hardware complexity and achievable performance, of the presented low complexity full duplex MIMO schemes over the relative available ones in the literature. We conclude the paper with a discussion on recent simultaneous transmit and receive operations capitalizing on the presented architectures, and provide a list of open challenges and research directions for future FD MIMO communication systems, as well as their promising applications.

Massive Multiple-input Multiple-output (MIMO) is an emerging technology for the 5G wireless communication systems which has the potential to provide high spectral efficient and improved link reliability and accommodate large number of users. Aiming at the problem of pilot contamination in massive MIMO systems, this paper proposes two algorithms to mitigate it. The first algorithm is depending on the idea of Path Loss to perform User Grouping (PLUG) which divide the users into the center and edge user groups depending on different levels of pilot contamination. It assigns the same pilot sequences to the center users which slightly suffer from pilot contamination and assign orthogonal pilot sequences to the edge users which severely suffer from pilot contamination. It is assumed that the number of users at the edge of each cell is the same. Therefore, to overcome such limitations of PLUG algorithm, we propose an improved PLUG (IPLUG) algorithm which provides the decision parameters for user grouping and selects the number of central and edge users in each cell in a dynamic manner. Thus, the algorithm prevents the wrong division of users in good channel conditions being considered as an edge user which causes large pilot overhead, and also identifies the users with worst channel conditions and prevents the wrong division of such users from the center user group. The second algorithm for pilot decontamination utilizes the idea of pseudo-random codes in which orthogonal pilot are assigned to different cells. Such codes are deployed to get a transmission pilot by scrambling the user pilot in the cell. Since the pilot contamination is generated because different cells multiplex the same set of orthogonal pilots and the pseudo-random sequences have good cross-correlation characteristics, this paper uses this feature to improve the orthogonality of pilots between different cells. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can effectively improve channel estimation performance and achievable rate as compared with other schemes.
