Mixed reality (MR) has recently been suggested as a new educational tool for nursing simulation. However, few studies have assessed the use and evaluation of MR nursing simulations. Therefore, this review identified studies of MR nursing simulations through a scoping review using the framework proposed by Arksey and O’Malley. The studies reviewed were found through DBpia, RISS, PubMed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar. Each study was analyzed, and data were abstracted into publication characteristics, simulation program details, device use, and simulation evaluation. A total of 10 studies were reviewed. Senses that were mainly used in MR nursing simulation included audition and haptics via motion, in addition to visual information. Simulations were evaluated using various outcome variables. Knowledge was most commonly evaluated, followed by clinical performance and satisfaction. This study is significant as it analyzed trends in research on MR nursing simulations in Korea and other countries and suggested directions for the use of MR technology in nursing simulations based on the findings. Additional studies are required to develop scenarios for the effective use of MR in nursing education and to evaluate the effects of MR nursing simulations.

The percentage of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients treated with peritoneal dialysis (PD) has declined in many countries since the mid-1990s. Barriers to PD have been reviewed extensively in the literature, but evidence about strategies to address these barriers and maximize the safe and effective use of PD is lacking. We therefore decided to conduct a scoping review identifying strategies to maximize PD use in adults with ESRD. Our search strategy included the following online databases: MEDLINE (OVID), EMBASE, PubMed, Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, Current Controlled Trials, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews for articles published from 1974 to November 2013. Experts in the field were contacted for information about other ongoing or unpublished studies. A complementary search was conducted in the gray literature. Websites of national, provincial or regional agencies were searched for documents regarding policies surrounding the use of PD. Individual dialysis centers need to identify barriers to increasing PD in their program and direct targeted strategies to maximize PD utilization. Our review highlights some effective strategies that may be used. Our review also highlights the need for further research into strategies to maximize PD utilization.

Reflective thinking has become a popular word in nursing education world wide, but its meaning and effective use remains debatable because of lack of clarity in its meaning (Mackintosh, 1998:553). The researcher engaged in the concept analysis of reflective thinking so as to fully understand its meaning and interpretation, hence the research question to be addressed by this article is: “What is the meaning of reflective thinking in clinical nursing education?”

Purpose: This review explored trends in studies on learning outcomes in nursing education using gamification, to provide directions for future research.Methods: This scoping review was conducted according to the Joanna Briggs Institute's guidelines. The literature search date was February 1, 2021.Results: Thirty-two studies were included. The largest proportion of studies were quantitative descriptive studies, including qualitative mixed methods (34.4%). More studies applied gamification in practical classes (53.1%) than in theoretical classes. Virtual simulation games (37.9%) and simple quiz games (34.4%) were most often used. Commonly used gamification elements included scores/points, feedback, badges, countdowns, challenges, competitions, and levels. Two themes emerged regarding the impact of gamification on learning: learners’ experiences and achievement outcomes with cognitive, affective, and psychomotor subthemes. Nursing education using gamification improved engagement, motivation, and learning achievement. However, there was less evidence for affective and psychomotor outcomes than for cognitive outcomes.Conclusion: Gamification can be an effective educational strategy if educator's have sufficient understanding and readiness and appropriate gamification elements are applied to nursing education. Further research should investigate knowledge retention in the cognitive domain, collaboration and empathy in the affective domain, and the improvement of nursing skills using new technologies in the psychomotor domain.

This paper presents a preliminary scoping review exploring the evidence landscape regarding academic staff experiences and perceptions of social media adoption as an educational tool in higher education. The goal of this paper is to examine 10 empirical studies of social media adoption in teaching and learning by academics in preparation for a proposal for a systematic literature review. Consequently, this scoping study assisted in the development of a review protocol which established the inclusion and exclusion criteria for conducting this systematic review at a future date. This paper will present the first stage of carrying out a systematic review: planning the review and presenting the results of the scoping study. The findings of this scoping study revealed that academics are slow in adopting social media within teaching and academics that have adopted the use of social media do so primarily for sharing relevant information and resources easily with students rather than for teaching purposes. Overall, the adoption of social media as an educational tool is faced with many challenges, such as cultural resistance, pedagogical issues, lack of institutional support and time investment. The results also indicate that teaching styles, demographic factors, privacy issues and previous experience can influence academic staff’s decision to adopt social media for teaching purposes.

Background: Strategy in hospitals is based on distinct principles and rules which lead organisations to act on chosen priorities. Hospitals are struggling to cope with increasing service demands and activity and need to become more responsive to changing environments while demonstrating effective use of resources. Strategizing involves the active process of sensing, planning, implementing and evaluating strategy. Strategy-as-practice is concerned with what people do about strategy in an organisation, as opposed to the traditional focus on what the organisation has as a strategy. It is recognised that there is a disconnection between strategic planning and implementation, however little is known about how organisational context influences the strategic process or how hospital personnel engage in strategic activities. The aim of this scoping review is to explore the literature on strategizing by hospital personnel in hospitals, and will include literature for hospital both professional and managerial backgrounds, to establish the extent and breadth of strategizing or as it is often termed ‘strategy-as-practice’ in hospitals. Methods: The systematic scoping review will search the literature within the databases of PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, ABI/INFORM (Proquest) and OpenGrey.net to explore the scientific evidence on strategizing in hospitals. The review will be based on the Arksey & O’Malley (2005) framework of five mandatory steps which was updated (Levac et al 2010, Colquhoun et al 2014 & Peters 2015) and is published online by the Joanna Briggs Institute. It will follow the PRISMA-ScP reporting guidelines. Conclusion: A scoping review methodology will provide a framework to explore strategizing in hospitals comprehensively and map the body of literature for this subject, which has not been conducted previously. This review will summarise the evidence on the use of strategy as practice in hospitals.  Based on the findings we will identify knowledge gaps and areas for future research.

The number of scientific publications combining robotic user interfaces and mixed reality highly increased during the 21st Century. Counting the number of yearly added publications containing the keywords “mixed reality” and “robot” listed on Google Scholar indicates exponential growth. The interdisciplinary nature of mixed reality robotic user interfaces (MRRUI) makes them very interesting and powerful, but also very challenging to design and analyze. Many single aspects have already been successfully provided with theoretical structure, but to the best of our knowledge, there is no contribution combining everything into an MRRUI taxonomy. In this article, we present the results of an extensive investigation of relevant aspects from prominent classifications and taxonomies in the scientific literature. During a card sorting experiment with professionals from the field of human–computer interaction, these aspects were clustered into named groups for providing a new structure. Further categorization of these groups into four different categories was obvious and revealed a memorable structure. Thus, this article provides a framework of objective, technical factors, which finds its application in a precise description of MRRUIs. An example shows the effective use of the proposed framework for precise system description, therefore contributing to a better understanding, design, and comparison of MRRUIs in this growing field of research.
