Transport duration affects the vibration level generated which has adverse effects on fresh produce during transportation. Furthermore, temperature affects the quality of fresh commodities during storage. This study evaluated physical changes in tomatoes during transportation and storage. Tomatoes were transported at three distances (100, 154, and 205 km) from a local farm and delivered to the Postharvest Laboratory where vibration acceleration was recorded per distance. Tomato was stored at two different temperatures (10 °C and 22 °C) for 12 days. The physical qualities like weight loss and firmness of all tomato samples were evaluated. RGB image acquisition system was used to assess the color change of tomato. The results of vibration showed that over 40% of accelerations occurred in the range of 0.82–1.31 cm/s2 of all transport distances. Physical quality analyses like weight loss and firmness were highly affected by transportation distance, storage temperature, and storage period. The reduction in weight loss and firmness was the highest in tomatoes transported from the farthest distance and stored at 22 °C. Lightness, yellowness, and hue values showed a high reduction as transport distance increased particularly in tomatoes stored at 22 °C. Redness, total color difference, and color indices increased significantly on tomatoes transported from 205 km and stored at 10 °C and 22 °C. The study indicated that the increase in transportation distance and storage temperature cause higher changes in the physical qualities of tomatoes.

The aim of the study was to assess the physicochemical changes occurred during storage of UHT milk for 90 days at three different temperatures i.e. 10˚C, 25˚C and 35˚C. pH, titrable acidity, total solids, lactose, moisture were the parameters used for physicochemical analyses. The results showed an increasing trend in titrable acidity, total solids with the passage of time. Temperature also affected the quality of UHT milk while lactose and moisture showed decreasing trend with the increase in temperature and storage period. The maximum titrable acidity (0.21%) and total solids (12.34%) were observed at 90<sup>th</sup> day of storage at 37˚C while lowest titrable acidity 0.11% and total solids content was noticed at 0 day of storage at 10˚C. Significantly highest lactose (4.073 %) moisture (87.92%) and pH (6.79) was noticed at 10˚C during 0 day storage while decline in lactose (3.53%), moisture (86.66%) and pH (6.42) was observed during 90 day of storage at 37˚C temperature

Simulated impact damage testing was investigated by fractal image analysis using response surface methodology (RSM) with a central composite design (CCF) on quality of ‘Glom Sali’ guava for drop heights (0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 m), number of drops (1, 3, and 5) and storage temperature conditions (10, 20, and 30 °C). After 48 h, impacted fruit were determined and analyzed for bruise area (BA), bruise volume (BV), browning index (BI), total color difference (∆E), image analysis for bruise area (BAI), and fractal dimension (FD) at the bruising region on peeled guava. Results showed that the correlation coefficient (r = −0.6055) between ∆E and FD value was higher than ∆E and either BA (r = 0.3132) or BV (r = 0.2095). The FD variable was determined as a better indicator than conventional measurement (BA or BV) for pulp browning and impact bruising susceptibility. The FD variable also exhibited highest R2adj value (81.69%) among the other five variables, as the highest precision model with high determination coefficient value (R2adj) (>0.8) for impact bruising prediction. Recommended condition of the FD variable to minimize impact bruising was drop height of 0.53 m for five drops under storage at 30 °C. FD variable assessed by image analysis was shown to be a highly capable measurement to determine impact bruising susceptibility in guava fruit.

The experiment was conducted to find out the effect of salt and storage temperature on the physico-chemical properties of beef nugget. For this purpose nugget samples were divided into two parts; one is called fresh nugget and another is preserved nugget at different temperatures. Then the fresh samples as well as the preserved samples were divided into four subdivisions. Then these are treated with different salt levels (0, 1.5, 3 and 5% salt level). The preserved samples were stored at 4oC and -20oC. Samples preserved at 4oC were stored in the refrigerator for 21 days and were analyzed on 7th day, 14th day and 21th day and samples preserved at -20oC were stored in the refrigerator for 60 days and were analyzed on 15th day, 30th day, 45th day and 60th day of preservation. Dry matter and Ash content of all the samples increased significantly (P<0.01) with the advancement of storage time and salt level. CP% of fresh samples was 22.31, 20.55, 20.13 and 20.55 at 0, 1.5, 3 and 5% salt concentration. CP, DM, Ash and Fat also varied among the samples significantly (P<0.01). Highly significant difference is observed in preserved samples than in fresh samples at different salt levels. Fresh nugget treated with 1.5% salt found to be more acceptable in terms of sensory evaluation. AbstractThe effect of storage temperature and ozone treatment on the post-harvest quality of cucumber and tomato was investigated. Cucumber and tomato were stored together with or without gaseous ozone treatment at 20 °C and 14 °C for 16 days. Firmness, color, weight loss, DA index and decay percentage of samples were evaluated during storage period. The results showed that the combination of ozone treatment and cold storage could maintain the quality of these horticultural products and decreased the decay incidence. Additionally, this combination also reduced the weight loss of samples during storage. Furthermore, ozone treatment maintained the green skin color of cucumber. No sign of chilling injury occurred during storage at 14 °C. Commodities stored with approximately 0.1 ppm gaseous ozone at 14 °C retained the firmness compared to other treatments until the end of the experiment. This study suggests a promising use of gaseous ozone treatment in storage chamber where ethylene-producing and ethylene-sensitive vegetables are stored together.

The experiment was conducted to study the shelf life and quality as affected by different stages of ripening, storage temperature as well as wrapping materials fruits of guava cv. Kazi. All the studied parameters except marketability increased for a certain storage period and then declined due to the effect of stages of ripening and wrapping materials (perforated and non perforated white and black polythene bag), while in case of storage temperature, there was gradual increase of physiological weight loss, sugar content (reducing, non-reducing and total sugar) and TSS content. Marketability decreased markedly with the advancement of storage period. All stages of ripening and all wrapping materials were able to keep fruits in marketable condition for 36 days of storage period. But fruits were in better marketable condition when harvested at stage 3 (ripe, yellowish green in colour and crispy pulp) or wrapped with black non-perforated polythene. 5ºC storage temperature, was able to retain more percentage of fruits in marketable condition with longer storage duration. In case of treatment combinations, fruits harvested at stage 3, stored at 5ºC temperature with black non-perforated polythene had the highest physiological weight loss, sugar content (reducing, non-reducing and total sugar) and TSS content while stage1 fruits stored at 20ºC with no wrapping (control) had the lowest.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/pa.v19i2.16906 Progress. This study examined three main possible effects (impact, storage temperature, and duration) that cause and extend the level of bruising and other quality attributes contributing to the deterioration of tomatoes. The impact threshold level required to cause bruising was conducted by subjecting tomato samples to a steel ball with a known mass from different drop heights (20, 40, and 60 cm). The samples were then divided and stored at 10 and 22 °C for 10 days for the further analysis of bruise area and any physiological, chemical, and nutritional changes at two day intervals. Six prediction models were constructed for the bruised area and other quality attribute changes of the tomato. Storage time, bruise area, weight loss, redness, total color change, color index, total soluble solids, and pigments content (lycopene and carotenoids) showed a significant (p < 0.05) increase with the increase of drop height (impact level) and storage temperature. After 10 days of storage, high drop impact and storage at 22 °C generated a higher reduction in firmness, lightness, yellowness, and hue° (color purity). Additionally, regression model findings showed the significant effect of storage duration, storage temperature, and drop height on the measured variables (bruise area, weight loss, firmness, redness, total soluble solids, and lycopene) at a 5% probability level with a determination coefficient (R2) ranging from 0.76 to 0.95. Bruising and other quality attributes could be reduced by reducing the temperature during storage. This study can help tomato transporters, handlers, and suppliers to understand the mechanism of bruising occurrence and how to reduce it.

Salah satu cara yang dilakukan untuk mempertahankan kualitas daun seledri dan memperpanjang umur simpan adalah menggunakan pengemasan dengan ukuran ketebalan plastik polietilen densitas rendah (LDPE) yang tepat dan penyimpanan pada suhu rendah. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh ketebalan plastik polietilen densitas rendah sebagai bahan pengemas terhadap mutu daun seledri selama penyimpanan dingin dan untuk mengetahui tingkat ketebalan plastik polietilen densitas rendah berapakah yang dapat mempertahankan mutu daun seledri yang terbaik. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian eksperimental. Rancangan  percobaan  yang  digunakan  adalah  Rancangan  Acak  Lengkap  (RAL) dengan perlakuan ketebalan plastik polietilen densitas rendah dengan ukuran ketebalan 0,02 mm; 0,03 mm; 0,04 mm; 0,05 mm, 0,06 mm. Pengamatan dilakukan setiap 3 hari sekali dan setiap perlakuan diulang sebanyak 3 kali pada suhu penyimpanan 100 ± 20C selama 18 hari penelitian. Parameter dalam penelitian ini adalah susut bobot, kadar air, warna, tekstur, tingkat kesegaran, dan aroma. Hasil analisis ragam menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan ketebalan plastik LDPE sebagai bahan pengemas daun seledri berpengaruh sangat nyata (P?0,01) terhadap parameter penelitian. Perlakuan terbaik diperoleh dari ketebalan plastik polietilen densitas rendah ukuran 0,04 mm dengan susut bobot 4,64 %, warna 18,97, tekstur 0,0455 N, kadar air 90,22 %, tingkat kesegaran 4,87 dan aroma 5,00. Kesimpulan bahwa tingkat ketebalan plastik LDPE 0,04 dapat mempertahankan mutu daun seledri paling lama diantara ukuran ketebalan yang lainnya yaitu selama 18 hari.     One way to maintain the quality of celery and extend shelf life is to use packaging with the right size level of low density polyethylene (LDPE) and storage at low temperatures. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of low density polyethylene plastic as a packaging material on the quality of celery during cold storage and to determine what size level of low density polyethylene plastic can maintain the best quality celery. This research method uses experimental research. The study applied a completely Randomized Design (RAL) with one treatment factor: size level of LDPE plastic (0.02 mm, 0.03 mm, 0.04 mm, 0.05 mm, 0.06 mm). Observations were carried out once every 3 days and each treatment was repeated 3 times at a storage temperature of 100 ± 20C for 18 days of the study. The parameters in this study are weight loss, water content, color, texture, level of freshness, and aroma. The results of the analysis of variance showed that the treatment of size level of LDPE plastic as a celery packaging material had a very significant effect (P?0.01) on the research parameters. The best treatment was obtained from the size level of a low density polyethylene plastic size of 0.04 mm with a weight loss is 4.64%, a color is 18.97, a texture is 0.0455 N, a moisture content is 90.22%, a level of freshness is 4.87 and a scent is 5.00. The conclusion that size level of LDPE plastic is 0.04 mm can maintain the longest quality of celery among other size level for 18 days.

Spinach is an annual, cool-season, green leafy vegetable that in temperate areas can be grown year-round. However, different seasons can influence the quality and shelf life of the produce. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of different seasons on the quality of baby spinach leaves during growing and postharvest storage. The study was initiated in early Nov. 2013 and culminated toward the end of Oct. 2014, then was repeated from Nov. 2014 until Oct. 2015. A 4 × 5 × 3 factorial experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replicates per treatment. The treatments were arranged as follows. In autumn, winter, spring, and summer, leaves were kept up to 12 d at three different temperatures: 4, 10, and 20 °C. Parameters recorded are weight loss, leaf length, total flavonoids, and antioxidant activity. Results of the study demonstrate that the level of antioxidants in winter remained stable during storage, specifically at 4 °C, followed by autumn and spring. In contrast, the summer season reflected the worse potential of retaining a level of antioxidants compared with the other seasons. On day 12, at a storage temperature of 4 °C, winter maintained 0.55 mg·g–1 dry weight (DW), whereas autumn, spring, and summer had 0.41, 0.40, and 0.11 mg·g–1 DW, respectively. In conclusion, it is recommended that baby spinach growers consider winter, autumn, and spring for growing baby spinach to manage the quality favorably during the postharvest storage period in South Africa.

Abstract This study aimed to compare the effects a commercial milk-based extender and a self-made egg yolk extender had on the quality of canine semen stored at two different temperatures, 5ºC or 15ºC. The ejaculate obtained was split into two aliquots of equal volume and diluted with the milk or egg yolk extender. The final concentration was 100×106 spermatozoa/mL. Diluted semen was placed in transport containers and maintained at final storage temperatures of 5ºC and 15ºC. The quality of the chilled semen was assessed 12, 24, and 36 hours after storage. Semen diluted with the milk extender had higher motility, vigour, and plasma membrane integrity (p<0.05) of the spermatozoa than that diluted with the egg yolk extender. No difference in the semen quality was observed between the stored temperatures in both the groups. The difference observed between the extenders could be due to the standard formulation of the commercial milk extender and the presence of glucose in the mixture. In conclusion, the milk extender was better than the egg yolk extender at preserving the motility, viability, and membrane integrity of chilled canine semen for up to 36 hours. The storage temperature did not seem to affect the semen quality, suggesting that canine semen can be refrigerated at 15ºC.
