Scientometrics enables scholars to assess and visualize emerging research trends and hot-spots in the scientific literature from a quantitative standpoint. In the last decades, Africa has nearly doubled its absolute count of scholarly output, even though its share in global knowledge production has dramatically decreased. The still-ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted the way scholarly research is conducted, published, and disseminated. However, the COVID-19-related research focus, the scientific productivity, and the research collaborative network of African researchers during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic remain to be elucidated. This study aimed to clarify the COVID-19 research patterns among African researchers and estimate the strength of collaborations and partnerships between African researchers and scholars from the rest of the world during the COVID-19 pandemic, collecting data from electronic scholarly databases such as Web of Science (WoS), PubMed/MEDLINE and African Journals OnLine (AJOL), the largest and prominent platform of African-published scholarly journals. We found that COVID-19-related collaboration patterns varied among African regions. For instance, most of the scholarly partnerships occurred with formerly colonial countries (such as European or North-American countries). In other cases, scholarly ties of North African countries were above all with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In terms of number of publications, South Africa and Egypt were among the most productive countries. Bibliometrics and, in particular, scientometrics can help scholars identify research areas of particular interest, as well as emerging topics, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. With a specific focus on the still-ongoing viral outbreak, they can assist decision- and policy-makers in allocating funding and economic-financial, logistic, organizational, and human resources, based on the specific gaps and needs of a given country or research area.

On the one hand, it has distorted and even amplified existing inequalities and disparities in terms of amount of scholarly output, share of global knowledge, and patterns of collaborations. On the other hand, COVID-19 provided new opportunities for research collaborations.

Background: Qatar is facing an increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). CVDs research is one of the country's priority research areas according to Qatar National Research Funds (QNRF) and Qatar University research roadmaps. Tremendous amount of investment and funding has been dedicated to this area. Study objective: This bibliometric analysis study aimed to provide a quantitative and qualitative description of CVD-related research in Qatar over the last 20 years. Method: Literature search was conducted through Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane. Research published between 2000 and 2020 were included. A preliminary analysis was done for the 534 documents published in the period between 2018 - 2020. Results: There was about a 42% increase in publications from 2018 to 2020. Almost half of the publications (48%) were published in first quartile ranked journals (Q1). Stroke was the main covered research area. Approximately 44% of the publications had a main author from a Qatari affiliation, and 56% of the Qatari funded publication received the grants from QNRF. Conclusion: This study will serve as a tool for better allocation of funding and grants in CVD-related research. Upon the completion of the study, we will be able to visualize more clearly and make a conclusion about CVD-related research in Qatar.

In this paper, we address this issue by hypothesising the existence of an embryonic stage for research topics and by suggesting that topics in this phase can actually be detected by analysing diachronically the co-occurrence graph of already established topics. To confirm our hypothesis, we performed a study of the dynamics preceding the creation of novel topics. This analysis showed that the emergence of new topics is actually anticipated by a significant increase of the pace of collaboration and density in the co-occurrence graphs of related research areas. These findings are very relevant to a number of research communities and stakeholders. Firstly, they confirm the existence of an embryonic phase in the development of research topics and suggest that it might be possible to perform very early detection of research topics by taking into account the aforementioned dynamics. Secondly, they bring new empirical evidence to related theories in Philosophy of Science. Finally, they suggest that significant new topics tend to emerge in an environment in which previously less interconnected research areas start cross-fertilising.

This paper aims to test the validity of the causality between financial development and economic growth on energy consumption in three of North African countries. The study employs error coreection model and Granger causaility test to analyza a dataset for three North African countries covering a period from 1980 to 2010. The applied model is based on demand function for energy to assess the existing of causal relationship of energy with financial development, and economic growth, in Algeria, Egypt, and Tunisia. Empirical results provide a positive significant relating financial development and energy consumption in Algeria, and Tunisia. On the other hand, Egypt’s results show a negative significant relationship relating energy consumption and financial development. The paper is valuable to policy makers in North African countries in their pursuit for achieving economic growth as it clarifies the urge for the financial development reforms to stimulate investment and growth.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to quantitatively assess the essential trends of existing research on “puffery in advertising” through bibliometric analysis. Design/methodology/approach This study uses citation data collected through Scopus and Google Scholar for the research area “puffery in advertising” to investigate the most productive journals, top countries of affiliation and prominent years with maximum citations. The study analyses the 87 articles related to “puffery in advertising,” published during 1840 to 2018. Moreover, this study also presents graphical analysis through network maps. Findings “Puffery in advertising” has remained an under-researched area. However, records of past ten years indicate marginal growth in the number of publications. USA dominates this research area with most numbers of articles published till date. Through clustering of subject areas, it is found that majority of articles have been published under the subject area of “Business, Management and Accounting.” Interestingly, the results of the network maps slightly differ from that of citation table. Practical implications This paper is useful for any reader or researcher who wants to understand the trends of “puffery in advertising” in terms of citation analysis, authors and affiliation countries, and prominent years with maximum citations, which would further enable them to discover emerging research areas, potential research collaborations and publications. Originality/value To the knowledge of the authors, this is the first ever bilbiometric study on “puffery in advertising” providing a bird’s-eye view of the essential trends.

Road recycling technology is gradually becoming a research focus in road construction due to natural resource shortages. It is therefore necessary to carry out deep and extensive analysis of the huge amount of publications in the research area of recycling technology in road construction. Based on three databases (Web of Science, Compendex and Scopus) and VOSviewer visualization software, this study conducts a bibliometric analysis of the literature in the field of recycled construction materials in pavement engineering. The global research publications were reviewed to quantitatively identify the literature characteristics. A number of publications, document types, research areas and keywords were used to achieve the general statistics of this reviewed literature. H-index, publication number and citations per publication were used to evaluate the academic contributions by country, institution and journal. The results show that the most productive country and institution for publications are the USA and Chang’an University from China, respectively, followed by China and Wuhan University of Technology. In recent years, researchers have generally paid attention to two main approaches: the application of rubber modified asphalt and the performance enhancement of recycled pavement.

While the literature describes several approaches which aim to identify the emergence of new research topics early in their lifecycle, these rely on the assumption that the topic in question is already associated with a number of publications and consistently referred to by a community of researchers. Hence, detecting the emergence of a new research area at an embryonic stage, i.e., before the topic has been consistently labelled by a community of researchers and associated with a number of publications, is still an open challenge. In this paper, we begin to address this challenge by performing a study of the dynamics preceding the creation of new topics. This study indicates that the emergence of a new topic is anticipated by a significant increase in the pace of collaboration between relevant research areas, which can be seen as the ‘parents’ of the new topic. These initial findings (i) confirm our hypothesis that it is possible in principle to detect the emergence of a new topic at the embryonic stage, (ii) provide new empirical evidence supporting relevant theories in Philosophy of Science, and also (iii) suggest that new topics tend to emerge in an environment in which weakly interconnected research areas begin to cross-fertilise.
