Scarce knowledge is available on the relationship between maternal chemical exposure during pregnancy and foetal deaths. We studied the association of spontaneous abortions and stillbirths with occupational or daily maternal exposure to chemicals commonly used by pregnant women. Data from the Japan Environment and Children’s Study (JECS), a nationwide prospective birth cohort study, were used. The participants of the study were asked about the frequency of their use of gasoline, pesticides, hair dye, and chlorine bleach during the first and the second to third trimesters of pregnancy. We investigated the relationship between the frequency of the use of chemicals and foetal death. Of the 104,065 foetuses, 923 (0.91%) were spontaneous abortions and 379 (0.37%) were stillbirths. Any type of exposure during the first trimester was not significantly associated with spontaneous abortions. Nevertheless, a more than weekly occupational use of hair dye from the first to the second/third trimester was significantly associated with stillbirth. The results of this study suggest that the frequent use of hair dye during pregnancy can have severe adverse effects on the foetus. These findings can help pregnant women, especially hairdressers, refrain from the continuous use of hair dyes.

ABSTRACT Ureaplasma urealyticum is the microorganism most frequently isolated from amniotic fluids of women in preterm labor. The relationship between vaginal colonization with U. urealyticum, vaginal interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) levels, and the IL-1ra genotype in pregnant women was examined. Vaginal specimens, obtained with a cotton swab from 207 women in their first trimester of pregnancy, were tested for IL-1ra concentrations by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and for U. urealyticum and IL-1ra genotypes by PCR. U. urealyticum was detected in 85 (41.1%) women. The median IL-1ra level was 450 ng/ml in women positive for U. urealyticum, as opposed to 225 ng/ml in women negative for this microorganism (P < 0.0001). Sixty-two percent of the 16 women who were homozygous for allele 2 of the IL-1ra gene (IL-1RN*2) were colonized with U. urealyticum, as opposed to 47% of the 49 women who were IL-1RN*1/IL-1RN*2 heterozygotes and 34% of the 133 women who were IL-1RN*1 homozygotes (P < 0.05). Median IL-1ra levels were 750 ng/ml in IL-1RN*2 homozygotes, 300 ng/ml in IL-1RN*1/IL-1RN*2 heterozygotes, and 250 ng/ml in IL-1RN*1 homozygotes (P = 0.02). The vast majority of subjects had an uneventful pregnancy and delivered a healthy infant at term. The IL-1ra genotype or U. urealyticum colonization was unrelated to birth weight. Pregnant women who are colonized with U. urealyticum during the first trimester have elevated vaginal IL-1ra concentrations and a higher prevalence of the IL-1RN*2 homozygote genotype than do noncolonized women.

Anemia is one of the many problems that occur in pregnant women in developing countries. First trimester pregnant women often experience nausea and vomiting that can affect the pattern of eating that is received. The purpose of this study was to determine whether nutritional intake and nausea and vomiting disorders in first trimester pregnant women were associated with anemia. The sample of this study was all first trimester pregnant women, selected by quota sampling technique. The research design used in this study was cross sectional, which aims to examine the correlation between nutrient intake (iron, protein, and vitamin C) and nausea and vomiting disorders with anemia. The instrument used to determine the intake of iron, protein, vitamin C was food records that were filled by respondents for 3 days. To test the hypothesis of the relationship used the chi square test and Fisher's exact test. From the results of the analysis of the relationship between iron intake, Vitamin C and nausea and vomiting with anemia, p-value = 0.003, p-value = 0.001 and p-value 0.001, it can be concluded that there is a relationship between iron intake, vitamin C and vomiting nausea with the incidence of anemia in first trimester pregnant women (first). While the results of the analysis of the relationship of protein intake with anemia obtained p-value = 0.806, it can be concluded that there is no relationship between protein intake and the incidence of anemia in first trimester pregnant women (first). The mean intake of iron, protein, and vitamin C in first trimester pregnant women both in the anemic and non-anemic groups had a daily intake that was still far from the nutritional adequacy standard set by the government that the RDA of iron was 26 g / dL / day Protein was 76 mg / day and Vit C is 70-85 mg / day. Ibu hamil trimester I sering mengalami gangguan mual muntah yang dapat berpengaruh pada pola ragam makan yang diterima. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mengetahui apakah asupan nutrisi dan gangguan mual muntah pada ibu hamil trimester I berhubungan dengan kejadian anemia. Sampel penelitian ini adalah seluruh ibu hamil trimester I diambil dengan teknik Non Probability sampling yaitu Sampling Kuota. Desain penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah epidemiologi analitik observasional dengan desain cross sectional, yang bertujuan menguji hipotesi dalam mencari korelasi asupan nutrisi (zat besi, protein, dan vitamin C) dan gangguan mual muntah dengan kejadian anemia. Instrumen yang digunakan untuk mengetahui kecukupan asupan zat besi, protein,vitamin C adalah food records yang di isi oleh responden selama 3 hari. Untuk melihat hubungan karakteristik dengan variabel dependen digunakan uji chi square dengan alternative uji exact fisher. Dari hasil analisis hubungan antara asupan zat besi, Vitamin C dan mual muntah dengan anemia didapatkan nilai p-value= 0,003, p-value = 0,001 dan p-value 0,001 maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada hubungan antara asupan Zat Besi, Vitamin C dan Mual Muntah dengan kejadian Anemia pada ibu hamil trimester 1 (pertama). Sedangkan hasil analisis hubungan asupan protein dengan anemia didaparkan p-value= 0,806 maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa tidak ada hubungan antara asupan protein dengan kejadian anemia pada ibu hamil trimester 1 (pertama). Rerata asupan zat besi, protein, dan vitamin C pada ibu hamil trimester I baik pada kelompok anemia maupun tidak anemia memiliki jumlah asupan harian yang masih jauh dari standar kecukupan gizi yang ditetapkan oleh pemerintah bahwa AKG zat besi adalah 26 g/dL/hari Protein adalah 76 mg/hari dan Vit C adalah 70-85 mg/hari. Complex prenatal screening of the first trimester remains the most accessible and effective way of stratifying the risks of fetal chromosomal abnormalities in the general population, which has satisfactory sensitivity and specificity. Over the last decade, due to including additional parameters (average pulsation index of blood flow in the uterine arteries, average blood pressure, placental growth factor concentration, obstetric and somatic anamnesis data), it has also become a tool for determining obstetric risks. The objective: to study the effect of these additional parameters on the accuracy of predicting the most common aneuploidies was made. Materials and methods. The cohort included 2164 pregnant women at 11+0 – 13+6 weeks of gestation, who underwent extended complex screening of the first trimester, which aimed to determine the risk of trisomy on the 21st, 13th and 18th chromosomes in the fetus and calculation risk of perinatal complications, namely: premature birth, preeclampsia and fetal growth retardation. Results. It was found that the history of miscarriage at 13–22 weeks of pregnancy (P=0,0006), increased resistance in the uterine arteries (P=0,0307), decreased concentration of placental growth factor (P=<0,0001) and increased mean blood pressure (P=0,0125) correlate with a high risk of trisomy of chromosome 21. Type I diabetes mellitus in pregnant women (P=0,0477) correlates with an increased risk of trisomy on chromosome 18. The concentration of placental growth factor (P=<0,0001) correlates with an increased risk of trisomy on chromosome 13. Conclusions. The data obtained require detailed analysis in the context of the possibility of optimizing mathematical models for predicting aneuploidy, as well as studying the relationship between markers of trophoblast invasion and chromosomal pathology of the fetus to better understand the mechanisms of first trimester fetal loss and placental dysfunction in the second half of pregnancy.

Background/Objectives: Various studies have linked vitamin deficiencies in early pregnancy with birth defects. The objective of this study was to identify the relationship between micronutrient deficiency and congenital malformations (CM). Subjects and Methods: There were 1,180 healthy, first-trimester pregnant Saudi-Arabian females selected from the antenatal care clinics of two hospitals and 21 health care centers located all over the city. Their full medical history, clinical examination, anthropometry, and various laboratory analyses were completed. Results: Forty-eight infants were born with CM. The serum concentrations of the analyzed nutrients (selenium, zinc, magnesium, and vitamins A, E, B12, and folic acid) were significantly lower in mothers of infants with CM compared to the mothers of infants without CM. In comparison, the serum totals of homocysteine (tHcy) levels were significantly higher among the CM group. Conclusion: This study highlights the association of CM with the deficiency of certain vitamins and minerals among pregnant women.

Nausea vomiting (emesis gravidarum) 50-60% occurs at the beginning of pregnancy trimester I. causes of increased estrogen, progesterone, and the release of human chorionic gonadothropine. Excessive emesis gravidarum is at risk of hyperemisis gravidarum which threatens the life of pregnant women. placenta. Purpose of the study: To determine the relationship between knowledge and attitudes of pregnant women to emesis gravidarum at Sumobito Health Center, Jombang Regency. Obeservational, cross sectional, total population of 34 first trimester pregnant women statistics Spearman Rank Correlation Test and somers test. Pregnant women had good knowledge of 15 (44.1%), sufficient knowledge 13 (38.2%), and insufficient knowledge 6 (17.7%). While being positive 24 (71%) and being negative 10 (29%), Rank Spearman test. Knowledge α = 0.005. P value = 0.216. The attitude test somers a = 0.05 P value = 0.954. There was no correlation between knowledge and the incidence of emesis gravidarum and there was no correlation between the attitude of pregnant women and the incidence of emesis gravidarum

The comparison of 622 twin and 622 singleton births allowed us to confirm the association of dizygotic twinning with maternal age, parity, and maternal weight and height, as well as the occurrence of unlike-sex twins in the mother's family. It was also shown that none of these associations, except for maternal height, can be explained by the others. Dizygotic twinning was also found to be negatively correlated with previous use of oral contraceptives and with irregularity of menstrual cycle. Finally, the relationship between spontaneous abortion in previous pregnancies and maternal exposure to medical irradiation was investigated.

OBJECTIVE: Physical activity during pregnancy is a poorly investigated subject on population level. The study aimed to describe duration, type and frequency of leisure-time physical activity during pregnancy, and to explore its associated factors. METHODS: A population-based study was carried out during 2004 in Southern Brazil. A total of 4,471 mothers were interviewed soon after delivery. Physical activity was measured using a questionnaire, developed for the study. Results were obtained by Poisson regression. RESULTS: In the sample, 14.8% of women reported to engage in some type of physical activity prior to pregnancy and 12.9% during pregnancy. In the first trimester, 10.4% of all mothers engaged in some type of physical activity; 8.5% in the second trimester and 6.5% in the third trimester. Only 194 mothers (4.3%) were active during the whole pregnancy. In the adjusted analysis, leisure-time physical activity was positively associated with schooling, physical activity advice during prenatal care, and family income (p<0.001), being employed during pregnancy (p=0.05), and number of pregnancies (p=0.02). Walking was the most frequent activity. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of leisure-time physical activity is low among Brazilian pregnant women. Although physical activity is not perceived as being pregnancy-threatening, and current guidelines recommend it, this population's behavior does not seem to be changing. Active lifestyle for both pregnant women and future mothers should be encouraged.

Introduction: The prevalence of high-risk pregnancies in Indonesia is still quite high. Mothers who suffer from illness and pregnancy complications can influence the outcome of the pregnancy, which risks the occurrence of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. The psychological effects of high-risk pregnancies are anxiety, stress, and the mother experiences a crisis that can affect the relationship between mother and fetus. These conditions can continue in the relationship between mother and baby after birth. Therefore there needs to be an effort to increase the attachment of the mother and fetus, one of which can be done by providing education. This study aims to determine the effect of prenatal attachment education on maternal and fetal attachment in high-risk pregnant women in Paiton Subdistrict, Probolinggo Regency. Method: The study was conducted in Paiton Subdistrict, Probolinggo Regency in Mei-Juni 2019. The research method used was quasy experiment using pre-post test design. The population in this study were all high risk pregnant women in Dringu Subdistrict, Probolinggo Regency. The sampling technique used in this study was purposive sampling by determining the sample in accordance with the inclusion criteria. The number of samples to be used was 20 respondents. Data collection techniques using a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon using SPSS. Results and Analysis: The results obtained showed the average score of attachment of the mother and fetus before the intervention was 52.15 and after the intervention was 60.50. There was a significant difference in the attachment of the mother and fetus before and after the intervention with a p value of 0,000 (p <0,000). Discussion: Prenatal care education needs to be included in the prenatal classroom program and started being given to pregnant women since the first trimester.   Keywords: attachment, prenatal attachment, high risk pregnant women

IntroductionNausea and vomiting in the first trimester is a common complaint of about 70% of pregnant women and it has a major effect on their quality of life. Its etiology is unknown but there are some risk factors for it.AimsThe purpose of this study was to obtain the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.MethodsThis case-control study was performed on 300 pregnant women who had referred to outpatient clinics. 150 of these women were suffering from nausea and vomiting while the other 150 didn’t have this problem. We determined BMI in two groups. Then the results were analyzed statistically.ResultsThe age average was 24.9 and 26.2 in case and control groups respectively. The BMI average was 26.01 kg/m2 and 26.02 kg/m2 in case and control groups respectively. No significant relationship was observed between two groups regarding the presence of nausea but in case group, women with vomiting had lower BMI (p = 0.026).ConclusionsIt was concluded that BMI is not a risk factor for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.
