Nickel-based composite electrochemical coatings (CEC) modified with multilayer graphene oxide (GO) were obtained from a sulfate-chloride electrolyte in the reverse electrolysis mode. The microstructure of these CECs was investigated by X-ray phase analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The corrosion-electrochemical behavior of nickel–GO composite coatings in a 0.5 M solution of H2SO4was studied. Tests in a 3.5% NaCl solution showed that the inclusion of GO particles into the composition of electrolytic nickel deposits makes their corrosion rate 1.40–1.50 times less.

Composite electrochemical coatings (CECs) based on nickel-chromium alloy and modified with multilayer graphene oxide (GO) were obtained. The electrodeposition process of these coatings was studied in the potentiodynamic mode. The structure and the composition of nickel–chromium–GO CECs were studied by scanning electron microscopy and laser microspectral analysis. Nickel–chromium–GO CECs are dense and uniform. The carbon content in them increases when moving from the substrate to the surface. It was established that the addition of GO particles into the composition of electrolytic coatings with a nickel-chromium alloy results in the increase in their microhardness from 4423–5480 MPa to 6120–7320 MPa depending on the cathodic current density.

Reduced graphene oxide–epoxy grafted poly(styrene-co-acrylate) composites (GESA) were prepared by anchoring different amount of epoxy modified poly(styrene-co-acrylate) (EPSA) onto reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets through π–π electrostatic attraction. The GESA composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The anti-corrosion properties of rGO/EPSA composites were evaluated by electro-chemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in hydroxyl-polyacrylate coating, and the results revealed that the corrosion rate was decreased from 3.509 × 10−1 to 1.394 × 10−6 mm/a.

Composite Ni/Al2O3 coatings were electrochemically deposited from a Watts bath modified with the organic additions of dioctyl sulphosuccinate sodium salt C20H37NaO7S–(DSS) and 2,3-dihydroxy-1,2 benzisothiazol-3-one 1,1-dioxide C7H5NO3–(LSA). The effect of different amount (50 and 100 g/l) of Al2O3 powder and organic additions on microstructure, microhardness, corrosion resistance and tribological properties was investigated. The coatings were examined by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The electrochemical behaviour of the coatings in corrosive solutions (1 M NaCl and 1 M Na2SO4) was investigated by potentiodynamic polarisation. The tribological properties were investigated by the Taber abrasive wear test, a standard test often applied in industrial practice. The results show that Al2O3 particles are uniformly distributed in the composite coatings compared with coatings without organic additions. The addition of organic compounds also reduced the size of the forming nickel crystallites and improved the tribological and corrosion properties of coatings containing the dispersed hard particles of Al2O3 added in an amount of 50 g/l and the addition of organic LSA and DSS compounds.

Gadolinium ( Gd ) ion implantation with doses from 2.5 × 1016 to 1 × 1017 ions/cm2 into ZK60 magnesium alloy was carried out to improve its surface properties. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), nanoindenter, electrochemical workstation and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were applied to analyze the chemical composition, nanomechanical properties and corrosion characteristics of the implanted layer. The results indicate that Gd ion implantation produces a hybrid-structure protective layer composed of MgO , Gd 2 O 3 and metallic Gd in ZK60 magnesium alloy. The surface hardness and modulus of the Gd implanted magnesium alloy are improved by about 300% and 100%, respectively with the dose of 1 × 1017 ions/cm2, while the slowest corrosion rate of the magnesium alloy in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution is obtained with the dose of 5 × 1016 ions/cm2.

To improve the corrosion property of magnesium alloys, Zr-based amorphous composite coatings have been fabricated on AZ91D magnesium alloy by laser cladding using mixed powders Zr55Al10Ni5Cu30/SiC. The microstructure of the coating was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The corrosion resistance of the coatings was tested in 3.5wt.% NaCl solution. The results show that the coatings mainly consist of amorphous and different crystalline phases. The coatings compared with AZ91D magnesium alloy exhibit good corrosion resistance because of the presence of the amorphous phase in the coatings.

Polyanisidine (POA) and polyanisidine-molybdate (POA−MoO42-) coatings have been successfully synthesized on steel grade СТ3 from aqueous solutions of oxalic acid by electrochemical method using cyclic voltammetry. The morphology and composition of these films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energydispersive X-ray (EDAX) methods. It was proven that the introduction of MoO42- into the polyanisidine matrix raised the corrosion resistance of the POA coating and also improved its adhesion properties. The protective properties of steel grade CT3 with POA and POA-MoO42- films were studied using potentiodynamic polarization in 3.5% NaCl solution. The results showed that ions improve anti-corrosion properties of POA films.

AbstractGraphene oxide/wood (GOW) composite was fabricated by a vacuum-pulse dipping technique, and the resulting composites were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Raman spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). As demonstrated, the wood matrix became filled by the dense multilayer graphene oxide (GO) membrane structure, which was formed by the layer-by-layer self-assembly of GO nano-sheets. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that the amorphous GO decreased the composite’s relative degree of crystallinity. Additionally, the filled GO generated improvement in the thermal stability of GOW composites in comparison with that of the natural wood (NW).
