In this paper, the effect of adding the refiner Sc to the high Zn/Mg ratio 7xxx series aluminum alloy melt on the hot tearing performance, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the alloy is studied. The hot tearing performance test (CRC) method is used to evaluate the hot tearing performance of the alloy. The squeeze casting process was used to form solid cylindrical parts to analyze the structure and properties of the alloy. This study shows that the hot cracking sensitivity of the alloy after the addition of the refiner Sc is significantly reduced. The ingot grain size is significantly reduced, and the average grain size is reduced from about 86 μm to about 53 μm. While the mechanical properties are significantly improved, and the tensile strength reduced from 552 MPa is increased to 571 MPa, and the elongation rate is increased from 11% to 14%.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-17Si-2Fe-2Cu-1Ni (mass fraction, %) alloys with 0.4% or 0.8% Mn produced by semi-solid casting process were studied. The semi-solid slurry of the alloys was prepared by ultrasonic vibration (USV) process. With USV process, the average grain size of primary Si in the alloys could be refined to 21~24μm, whether with or without P modification. The P addition has no further refinement effect on the primary Si in the case of the combined use of USV with P addition. Without USV, the alloys contain a large amount of long needle-like β-Al5(Fe,Mn)Si phase and plate-like δ-Al4(Fe,Mn)Si2 phase. Besides, the alloy with 0.8% Mn contains a small amount of coarse dendritic α-Al15(Fe,Mn)3Si2 phase. With USV treatment and semi-solid casting process, the Fe-containing compounds in the alloys are refined and exist mainly as δ-Al4(Fe,Mn)Si2 particles with average grain size of about 18μm, and only a small amount of β-Al5(Fe,Mn)Si phase is remained. With USV treatment and without P modification, the ultimate tensile strengths (UTS) of the alloys containing 0.4% and 0.8%Mn produced by semi-solid process are 260MPa and 270MPa respectively at room temperature, and the UTS are 127MPa and 132MPa at 350°C.

Superalloy René 77 is very wide used for turbine blades, turbine disks of aircraft engines which work up to 1050°C. These elements are generally produced by the investment casting method. Turbine blades produced by conventional precision casting methods have coarse and inhomogeneous grain structure. Such a material often does not fulfil basic requirements, which concern mechanical properties for the stuff used in aeronautical engineering. The incorporation of controlled grain size improved mechanical properties. This control of grain size in the casting operation was accomplished by the control of processing parameters such as casting temperature, mould preheating temperature, and the use of grain nucleates in the face of the mould. For nickel and cobalt based superalloys, it was found that cobalt aluminate (CoAl2O4) has the best nucleating effect. The objective of this work was to determine the influence of the inoculant’s content (cobalt aluminate) in the surface layer of the ceramic mould on the microstructure and mechanical properties at high temperature of nickel based superalloy René 77. For this purpose, the ceramic moulds were made with different concentration of cobalt aluminate in the primary slurry was from 0 to 10% mass. in zirconium flour. Stepped and cylindrical samples were casted for microstructure and mechanical examinations. The average grain size of the matrix ( phase), was determined on the stepped samples. The influence of surface modification on the grain size of up to section thickness was considered. The microstructure investigations with the use of light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) enable to examine the influence of the surface modification on the morphology of ’ phase and carbides precipitations. Verification of the influence of CoAl2O4 on the mechanical properties of castings were investigated on the basis of results obtained form creep tests.

Aluminum alloys are the most essential part of all shaped castings manufactured, mainly in the automotive, food industry, and structural applications. There is little consensus as to the precise relationship between grain size after grain refinement and corrosion resistance; conflicting conclusions have been published showing that reduced grain size can decrease or increase corrosion resistance. The effect of Al–5Ti–1B grain refiner (GR alloy) with different percentages on the mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of Aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloy (Al–Mg–Si) was studied. The average grain size is determined according to the E112ASTM standard. The compressive test specimens were made as per ASTM: E8/E8M-16 standard to get their compressive properties. The bulk hardness using Vickers hardness testing machine at a load of 50 g. Electrochemical corrosion tests were carried out in 3.5 % NaCl solution using Autolab Potentiostat/Galvanostat (PGSTAT 30).The grain size of the Al–Mg–Si alloy was reduced from 82 to 46 µm by the addition of GR alloy. The morphology of α-Al dendrites changes from coarse dendritic structure to fine equiaxed grains due to the addition of GR alloy and segregation of Ti, which controls the growth of primary α-Al. In addition, the mechanical properties of the Al–Mg–Si alloy were improved by GR alloy addition. GR alloy addition to Al–Mg–Si alloy produced fine-grained structure and better hardness and compressive strength. The addition of GR alloy did not reveal any marked improvements in the corrosion properties of Al–Mg–Si alloy.

Physicallybased constitutive equations are increasingly used for finite element simulations of metal forming processes due to the robust capability of modelling of underlying microstructure evolutions. However, one of thelimitations of current models is the lack of practical validation using real microstructure data due to the difficulties in achieving statistically meaningful data at a sufficiently large microstructure scale. Particularly, dislocation density and grain size governing the hardening in sheet deformation are of vital importance and need to be precisely quantified. In this paper, a set of dislocation mechanics-based plane stress material model is constructed for hot forming aluminum alloy. This material model is applied to high strength 7075 aluminum alloy for the prediction of the flow behaviorsconditioned at 300–400 °C with various strain rates. Additionally, an electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique was applied to examine the average grain size and geometrical necessary dislocation (GND) density evolutions, enabling both macro- and micro- characteristics to be successfully predicted. In addition, to simulate the experienced plane stress states in sheet metal forming, the calibrated model is further extended to a plane stress stateto accuratelypredict the forming limits under hot conditions. The comprehensively calibrated material model could be used for guidinga better selection of industrial processing parameters and designing process windows, taking into account both the formed shape as well as post formed microstructure and, hence, properties.

Purpose Vibratory weld conditioning parameters have a great influence on the improvement of mechanical properties of weld connections. The purpose of this paper is to understand the influence of vibratory weld conditioning on the mechanical and microstructural characterization of aluminum 5052 alloy weldments. An attempt is made to understand the effect of the vibratory tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding process parameters on the hardness, ultimate tensile strength and microstructure of Al 5052-H32 alloy weldments. Design/methodology/approach Aluminum 5052 H32 specimens are welded at different combinations of vibromotor voltage inputs and time of vibrations. Voltage input is varied from 50 to 230 V at an interval of 10 V. At each voltage input to the vibromotor, there are three levels of time of vibration, i.e. 80, 90 and 100 s. The vibratory TIG-welded specimens are tested for their mechanical and microstructural properties. Findings The results indicate that the mechanical properties of aluminum alloy weld connections improved by increasing voltage input up to 160 V. Also, it has been observed that by increasing vibromotor voltage input beyond 160 V, mechanical properties were reduced significantly. It is also found that vibration time has less influence on the mechanical properties of weld connections. Improvement in hardness and ultimate tensile strength of vibratory welded joints is 16 and 14%, respectively, when compared without vibration, i.e. normal weld conditions. Average grain size is measured as per ASTM E 112–96. Average grain size is in the case of 0, 120, 160 and 230 is 20.709, 17.99, 16.57 and 20.8086 µm, respectively. Originality/value Novel vibratory TIG welded joints are prepared. Mechanical and micro-structural properties are tested.

Mg-Zn-Y alloys containing a thermally stable icosahedral quasicrystal phase (I-phase) will have wide application future on condition that primary α-Mg dendrite and the I-phase can be refined during the casting process. In this research, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the rheo-squeeze casting (RSC) Mg-6Zn-1.4Y alloys have been investigated. The Mg alloy melt was exposed to ultrasonic vibration (USV) with different acoustic power densities from 0 W/mL to 9 W/mL, and then the slurry was formed by squeeze casting. The results show that good semi-solid slurry with fine and spherical α-Mg particles could be obtained with the acoustic power density of 6 W/mL, and the average grain size and shape factor of primary α-Mg were 32 μm and 0.76, respectively. Meanwhile the coarse eutectic I-phase (Mg3Zn6Y) was refined obviously and dispersed uniformly. Compared with the samples without USV, the tensile strength and elongation of the RSC casting samples with 6 W/mL acoustic power density were elevated by 10.6% and 55.5%, respectively.

Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was applied to a commercial AZ61 magnesium alloy for up to 8 passes at temperatures as low as 473K. Microstructures and mechanical properties of as-received and ECAP deformed samples were investigated. The microstructure was initially not uniform with a “bimodal” grain size distribution but became increasingly homogeneous with further ECAP passes and the average grain size was considerably reduced from over 26 μm to below 5 μm. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) decreases clearly after one pass, but increases significantly up to two passes, and then continuously slowly decreases up to six passes, and again increases slightly up to eight passes. In contrast, the uniform elongation increased significantly up to 3 passes, followed by considerable decrease up to 8 passes. These observations may be attributed to combined effects of grain refinement and texture development.

The fine-grained rolling steels NFG600 and the conventional usual rolling steels SM490 were processed by sand paper polishing and mechanical grinding to compare the residual stress generated after processing. The average grain size of NFG600 and SM490 is 3 μm and 15μm respectively. Therefore improvement of mechanical properties for such fine-grained steels is expected, it is important to understand the residual stress state of new fine-grained materials with processing. In this study, multi axial stresses of two kinds of specimens after polishing and grinding were measured by three kinds of analysis methods including cos-ψ method. As a result, as for σ33, the stress of NFG was compression, though that of SM490 was tension.

In this study, changes in the microstructure, mechanical properties, and electrical conductivity of cast and extruded Al–Zn–Cu–Mg based alloys with the addition of Li (0, 0.5 and 1.0 wt.%) were investigated. The Al–Zn–Cu–Mg–xLi alloys were cast and homogenized at 570 °C for 4 hours. The billets were hot extruded into rod that were 12 mm in diameter with a reduction ratio of 38:1 at 550 °C. As the amount of Li added increased from 0 to 1.0 wt.%, the average grain size of the extruded Al alloy increased from 259.2 to 383.0 µm, and the high-angle grain boundaries (HGBs) fraction decreased from 64.0 to 52.1%. As the Li content increased from 0 to 1.0 wt.%, the elongation was not significantly different from 27.8 to 27.4% and the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) was improved from 146.7 to 160.6 MPa. As Li was added, spherical particles bonded to each other, forming an irregular particles. It is thought that these irregular particles contribute to the strength improvement.

For the A1-5Ti-1B grain refiner, the addition of 0.1 wt.% provided a 68 % reduction in grain size as compared to the unrefined AZ91E alloy at a holding time of five minutes. Grain growth restriction by TiB₂ particles was the source of grain refinement. With the addition of A1-5Ti-1B, only a small reduction in hot tearing susceptibility ws observed because large TiA1₃ particles bonded poorly with the eutectic and blocked feeding channels. The addition of 1.0 wt.% A1-1Ti-3B provided a grain size reduction of 63% as compared to the unrefined AZ91E alloy at a holding time of five minutes. The grain refinement with A1-1Ti-3B addition was attributed to a combination of TiB₂ grain growth restriction and A1B₂ nucleating sites. A significant reduction in hot tearing susceptibility was observed with A1-1Ti-3B addition as a result of a higher cooling rate and shorter local soldification time as compared to the AZ91E alloy. The reduction in hot tearing susceptibility was attributed to the good interface between eutectic and TiB₂ particles. Both grain refiners demonstrated a good resistance to fading during the holding times investigated. In addition, the AZ91E + A1-5Ti-1B and AZ91E + A1-1Ti-3B castings showed much fewer dislocation networks as compared to the untreated AZ91E casting. The development of efficient A1-Ti-B refiners can also improve castability of magnesium alloys. In addition, the fade resistant A1-Ti-B grain refiners can reduce operating costs and maintain productivity on the foundry floor. Thus, magnesium alloy with A1-Ti-B treatment have the potential for more demanding structural applications in the automobile and aerospace industries. Vehicle weight in the aerospace and automotive industries directly impacts carbon emissions and fuel efficiency. An increase in the use of lightweight materials for structural applications will result in lighter vehicles. Low density materials, such as magnesium (1.74 g/cm³) are a potential alternative to aluminium (2.70 g/cm³), to reduce component weight in structural applications. However, current magnesium alloys still do not have adequate mechanical properties and castability to meet the performance specifications of the automotive and aerospace industries. Grain refinement can significantly improve mechanical properties and reduce hot tearing during permanent mould casting. Recently, Al-Ti-B based grain refiners have shown potential in grain refining magnesium-aluminum alloys such as AZ91E. This study investigates the grain refining efficiency and fading of A1-5Ti-1B and A1-1Ti-3B in AZ91E magnesium alloy and their subsequent effect on hot tearing. The grain refiners were added at 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 1.0 wt.% levels. For the grain refinement and fading experiments, the castings were prepared using graphite moulds with holding times of 5, 10 and 20 minutes. For the hot tearing experiments, castings were produced representing the optimal addition level of each grain refiner. The castings were prepared using a permanent mould with pouring and mould temperatures of 720 and 180 ºC, respectively. The castings were characterized using SEM, TEM, optical microscopy and thermal analysis.
