The retained austenite (RA) in advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) grades, such as dual-phase (DP) steels, plays an important role on their formability. Thanks to the transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) effect that occurs during the mechanically induced transformation of RA into martensite, additional ductility is obtained. Martensite has a higher flow stress than austenite; hence, the transformation results in an apparent hardening, which is beneficial for the stability of deformation. The stability of RA at a given temperature strongly depends on its carbon content, which, in AHSS, is not uniform but distributed. The aim of this study is to build a model that predicts the transformation as well as TRIP in a DP steel grade with RA. A physics-based kinetic model is presented that captures the transformation of retained austenite based on the thermodynamic driving force of the applied stress. A direct analytical estimate of transformation plasticity is provided, which is consistent with the kinetic model. Transformation kinetics is incorporated in a self-consistent, mean-field homogenization-based constitutive model. Finally, an indication of the effect of transformation of retained austenite on formability is given.

Carbide-free bainitic (CFB) steels belong to the family of advanced high strength steels (AHSS) that are struggling to become part of the third-generation steels to be marketed for the automotive industry. The combined effects of the bainitic matrix and the retained austenite confers a significant strength with a remarkable ductility to these steels. However, CFB steels usually show much more complex microstructures that also contain MA (Martensite–Austenite) phase and auto-tempered martensite (ATM). These phases may compromise the ductility of CFB steels. The present work analyzes the substructure evolution during tensile tests in the necking zone, and deepens into the void and crack formation mechanisms and their relationship with the local microstructure. The combination of FEG-SEM imaging, EBSD, and X-ray diffraction has been necessary to characterize the substructure development and damage initiation. The bainite matrix has shown great ductility through the generation of high angle grain boundaries and/or large orientation gradients around voids, which are usually found close to the bainite and MA/auto-tempered martensite interfaces or fragmenting the MA phase. Special attention has been paid to the stability of the retained austenite (RA) during the test, which may eventually be transformed into martensite (Transformation Induced Plasticity, or TRIP effect).

In the present paper, controlled cooling in different ways was performed using a laboratory hot rolling mill in ultra-high strength hot rolled ferrite-bainite dual phase (DP) steel. The results have shown that the final microstructures of DP steel comprise ferrite, bainite and a small amount of retained austenite and martensite. DP steel has a tensile strength ranging from 1010 to 1130MPa and yet retains considerable total elongation in the range of 14–17%. The addition of Mn and Nb to DP steel leads to the maximum ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and the product of ultimate tensile strength and total elongation due to the formation of retained austenite and granular bainite structure. Laminar flow cooling after hot rolling results in a significant increase in the quantity of ferrite and bainite due to the suppression of pearlite transformation, and as a result, the present steel possesses high strengths and good toughness.

The relationship between the toughness and silicon content of high strength Mn-Si-Cr series bainitic steels has been investigated. The results show that with increasing in silicon content, the onset temperature of the steel’s tempered martensite embrittlement (TME) rises; moreover, the minimum value of tested toughness decreases and the tempering temperature corresponding to the minimum value of toughness increases. This phenomenon results from the effect of silicon on the stability of filmy carbon-enriched retained austenite in carbide-free bainite/martensite (CFB/M) microstructure.

ABSTRACTSteels with transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) offer an excellent combination of high strength and ductility. The transformation of meta-stable austenite into martensite during straining leads to strong local hardening and prevents early localization of strain. Therefore, the mechanical properties of TRIP steels, including the damage resistance depend to a significant extent on the stability of retained austenite. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of texture on the stability of retained austenite. In order to compare the changes in both tension and compression the steel was deformed by a micro 3-point-bending device. The texture development upon bending was followed by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique. Based on a simple analysis using the relation between face centered cube (FCC) and body centered cube (BCC) shear geometries theoretically expected changes of texture components due to deformation are proposed. Using the results of this analysis the observed changes of the austenite texture due to deformation could be distinguished from those due to transformation, by comparing the experimental results with the theoretically expected behavior. From this comparison, austenite grains with “Brass (B) {011} <211>” and “Goss (G) {110} <100>” texture components were found to transform into martensite much easier than differently oriented grains.

The design of metastable retained austenite is the key issue to obtain nano bainitic steel with high strength and toughness. In this study, nanostructured Fe-based bainitic coatings were fabricated using laser cladding and following isothermal heat treatment. The microstructures and mechanical properties of the laser cladded coating were investigated. The results show that the Mn, Cr, Co, and Al segregated at the solidified prior grain boundaries. The micro-segregation of the solutes strongly influenced the stability of the austenite. As the isothermal temperature decreases, the interface of the bainite and blocky retained austenite approach to the prior interdendritic regions with the decreasing isothermal temperature, and the final volume fraction also decreases. The volume fractions of each phase and microstructure morphology of the coatings were determined by the interdendritic micro-segregation and isothermal temperatures. The stability of the blocky retained austenite distributed at the interdendritic area was lower than that of film and island-like morphology. This phenomenon contributed to the ductile and tough nano bainitic coatings with tunable mechanical properties.

Medium-carbon, silicon-rich steels are commonly suggested to obtain a very fine bainitic microstructure at a low temperature slightly above Ms. Thereby, the resulted microstructure consists of slender bainitic-ferritic plates interwoven with retained austenite. The advanced strength and ductility package of this steel is much dependent on the fineness of bainitic ferrite, as well as the retained austenite phase. In this article, the aluminum to silicon ratio, and the isothermal transformation temperature have been adopted to obtain ultra-high strength high carbon steel. Optical and SEM investigation of the produced steels have been performed. XRD has been used to track the retained austenite development as a result of the change in the chemical composition of developed steels and heat treatment process. Mechanical properties in terms of hardness and microhardness of obtained phases and structure were investigated. Results show that the increment of aluminum to silicon ratio has a great effect in promoting the bainitic transformation, in tandem with improving the stability and the fineness of retained austenite. Such an advanced structure leads to enhancement in the whole mechanical properties of the high carbon steel.

Mechanical stability of retained austenite and its effect on mechanical properties of high strength TRIP steel were studied by means of OM, SEM, TEM, XRD, and mechanical testing after various heat treatments. Results revealed that the film-type retained austenite located between bainite laths with high carbon content showed gradual martensitic transformation with strain, demonstrating a good TRIP effect. Samples annealed at 800°C and held at 420°C showed an optimum value of strength and ductility product up to 18381.2MPa%. Transformation kinetics of the retained austenite were evaluated through tensile tests and fitted by the function y=0.86-0.86×exp(-Ax). The fitting results were good.
