To enlarge the chemical diversity of Eurotium sp. SCSIO F452, a talented marine-derived fungus, we further investigated its chemical constituents from a large-scale fermentation with modified culture. Four pairs of new salicylaldehyde derivative enantiomers, euroticins F-I (1–4), as well as a known one eurotirumin (5) were isolated and characterized. Compound 1 features an unprecedented constructed 6/6/6/5 tetracyclic structures, while 2 and 3 represent two new types of 6/6/5 scaffolds. Their structures were established by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, X-ray diffraction, 13C NMR, and electronic circular dichroism calculations. Selected compounds showed significant inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase and moderate cytotoxic activities against SF-268, MCF-7, HepG2, and A549 cell lines.

A meroterpenoid, chevalone B, was obtained from the Cucumaria japonica-derived fungus Aspergillus sp. H30, which was collected from the South China Sea. The structure was determined by the analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic and X-ray data. This is the first report of the crystallographic data and absolute stereochemistry of chevalone B, which was shown to have weak antibacterial activity.

Cytochalasans have continuously aroused considerable attention among the chemistry and pharmacology communities due to their structural complexities and pharmacological significances. Sixteen structurally diverse chaetoglobosins, 10-(indol-3-yl)-[13]cytochalasans, including a new one, 6-O-methyl-chaetoglobosin Q (1), were isolated from the coral-associated fungus Chaetomium globosum C2F17. Their structures were accomplished by extensive spectroscopic analysis combined with single-crystal X-ray crystallography and ECD calculations. Meanwhile, the structures and absolute configurations of the previously reported compounds 6, 12, and 13 were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis for the first time. Chaetoglobosins E (6) and Fex (11) showed significant cytotoxicity against a panel of cancer cell lines, K562, A549, Huh7, H1975, MCF-7, U937, BGC823, HL60, Hela, and MOLT-4, with the IC50 values ranging from 1.4 μM to 9.2 μM.

Abstract Myrcauones A–D (1–4), four new phloroglucinol–terpene adducts were isolated from the leaves of Myrciaria cauliflora. Their structures with absolute configurations were elucidated by combination of spectroscopic analysis, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations. Compound 1 was a rearranged isobutylphloroglucinol–pinene adduct featuring an unusual 2,3,4,4a,10,11-hexahydro-1H-3,11a-methanodibenzo[b,f]oxepin backbone. Compound 4 showed moderate antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria including multiresistant strains. Graphic Abstract

Five carbamate derivatives, obtucarbamates C and D (1, 2), dimethyl ((carbonylbis(azanediyl))bis(2-methyl-5,1-phenylene))dicarbamate (3), obtucarbamates A and B (4, 5), and four aromadendrane-type sesquiterpenoids, (+)-4β-N-methenetauryl-10β-methoxy-1β,5α,6β,7β-aromadendrane (6), (−)-4β-N-methenetauryl-10β-methoxy-1β,5β,6α,7α-aromadendrane (7), (−)-4α,10β-aromadendranediol (8), (+)-4β,10β-aromadendranediol (9) were obtained from the South China Sea gorgonian coral Melitodes squamata Nutting. Compounds 1, 2, 6, and 7 were new, and their structures were established by spectroscopic analyses. Compounds 6 and 7 contained a taurine group that was rarely found in marine natural compounds, and 7 showed moderate antibacterial activity. The possible biosynthesis routes of 1–5 were conjectured.

This study deals with the green synthesis of chromium oxide (Cr2O3) nanoparticles using a leaf extract of Abutilon indicum (L.) Sweet as a reducing and capping agent. Different characterization techniques were used to characterize the synthesized nanoparticles such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectroscopy. The X-ray diffraction technique confirmed the purity and crystallinity of the Cr2O3 nanoparticles. The average size of the nanoparticles ranged from 17 to 42 nm. The antibacterial activity of the green synthesized nanoparticles was evaluated against four different bacterial strains, E. coli, S. aureus, B. bronchiseptica, and B. subtilis using agar well diffusion and a live/dead staining assay. The anticancer activities were determined against Michigan Cancer Foundation-7 (MCF-7) cancer cells using MTT and a live/dead staining assay. Antioxidant activity was investigated in the linoleic acid system. Moreover, the cytobiocompatibility was analyzed against the Vero cell lines using MTT and a live/dead staining assay. The results demonstrated that the green synthesized Cr2O3 nanoparticles exhibited superior antibacterial activity in terms of zones of inhibition (ZOIs) against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria compared to plant extracts and chemically synthesized Cr2O3 nanoparticles (commercial), but comparable to the standard drug (Leflox). The green synthesized Cr2O3 nanoparticles exhibited significant anticancer and antioxidant activities against MCF-7 cancerous cells and the linoleic acid system, respectively, compared to chemically synthesized Cr2O3 nanoparticles. Moreover, cytobiocompatibility analysis displayed that they presented excellent biocompatibility with Vero cell lines than that of chemically synthesized Cr2O3 nanoparticles. These results suggest that the green synthesized Cr2O3 nanoparticles’ enhanced biological activities might be attributed to a synergetic effect. Hence, green synthesized Cr2O3 nanoparticles could prove to be promising candidates for future biomedical applications.

AbstractTwo undescribed Tricholoma triterpenoids, namely tricholopardins C (1) and D (2), were isolated from the wild mushroom Tricholoma pardinum. Their structures with absolute configurations were elucidated by spectroscopic methods, as well as the single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 1 and 2 were further obtained by chemical conversions from the known analogues. Compound 1 showed significant cytotoxicity to MCF-7 and Hela cell lines with IC50 values of 4.7 μM and 9.7 μM, respectively. Its mechanism of inducing MCF-7 cell apoptosis was studied briefly. In the northern South China Sea, pockmarks are widely distributed on the seabed offshore on the southwestern Xisha Uplift. The mineralogy and geochemistry of the clay minerals and surface sediments from the pockmark field were identified using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis to trace the provenance, weathering, and sediment transportation system in the area. The clay minerals are primarily comprised of illite, smectite, kaolinite, and chlorite, showing a distribution of average weight percentages of 35%, 35%, 18%, and 13%, respectively. Based on the surrounding fluvial drainage basins and various transport mechanisms (current or monsoon), illite and chlorite primarily originate from rivers in Taiwan and the Mekong and Red Rivers. Kaolinite primarily originates from the Pearl River, and smectite derived from the Luzon arc system is primarily transported by surface currents with significant influence from the Kuroshio intrusion.
