Reliance on inorganic fertilizers with less or no use of organic fertilizers has impaired the productivity of soils worldwide. Therefore, the present study was conducted to quantify the effects of integrated nutrient management on rice yield, nutrient use efficiency, soil fertility, and carbon (C) sequestration in cultivated land. The experiment was designed with seven treatments comprising of a zero input control, recommended inorganic fertilizers (RD), poultry manure (PM) (5 t ha−1) + 50% RD, PM (2.5 t ha−1) + 75% RD, vermicompost (VC) (5 t ha−1) + 50% RD, VC (2.5 t ha−1) + 75% RD, and farmers’ practice (FP) with three replications that were laid out in a randomized complete block design. The highest grain yield (6.16–6.27 t ha−1) was attained when VC and PM were applied at the rate of 2.5 t ha−1 along with 75% RD. Uptake of nutrients and their subsequent use efficiencies appeared higher and satisfactory from the combined application of organic and inorganic fertilizers. The addition of organic fertilizer significantly influenced the organic carbon, total carbon, total nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, soil pH, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, calcium, and magnesium contents in post-harvest soil, which indicated enhancement of soil fertility. The maximum value of the organic carbon stock (18.70 t ha−1), total carbon stock (20.81 t ha−1), and organic carbon sequestration (1.75 t ha−1) was observed in poultry manure at the rate of 5 t ha−1 with 50% RD. The soil bulk density decreased slightly more than that of the control, which indicated the improvement of the physical properties of soil using organic manures. Therefore, regular nourishment of soil with organic and inorganic fertilizers might help rejuvenate the soils and ensure agricultural sustainability.

The study was conducted at 10 - years- old walnut orchard at Dr. Y. S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni-Solan(H.P.) to find out the effect of integrated nutrient management on leaf nutrient status of walnut (Juglans regia L.). There were 13 different treatment combinations of organic and inorganic fertilizers. Treatments were applied on per tree basis. For sustainable boro rice production in Bangladesh, a balanced fertilization to improve the current soil condition caused by mono-application of inorganic fertilizers and appropriate rice variety selection are very crucial. Therefore, an experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the boro season of December 2016 to May 2017 to evaluate the effect of integrated nutrient management on two boro rice cultivars. The varieties were BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 and eight kinds of nutrient management viz., control (no fertilizers), recommended dose of inorganic fertilizers (120-60-40 N, P2O5, K2O kg ha-1 + gypsum 60 kg ha-1 and ZnSO4 @ 10 kg ha-1), full dose of poultry manure @ 5 t ha-1, cowdung @ 10 t ha-1, poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1 + 50% prilled urea and full dose of other inorganic fertilizers, cowdung @ 5 t ha-1 + 50% prilled urea and full dose of inorganic fertilizers, poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1 + 75% prilled urea and full dose of inorganic fertilizers, and cowdung @ 5 t ha-1 + 75% prilled urea and full dose of other inorganic fertilizers. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications. Result showed that, yield and yield components of boro rice were significantly influenced by variety, nutrient management and interaction of variety and nutrient management. In respect of grain yield, BRRI dhan29 produced the maximum yield (5.46 t ha-1). BRRI dhan28 showed poor performance with all characters and gave the minimum yield (4.07 t ha-1). In case of nutrient managements, the highest yield and yield component were obtained from poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1 + 50% prilled urea and full dose of inorganic fertilizers and produced the maximum grain yield (5.70 t ha-1). In the interaction of variety and integrated nutrient management, the highest grain yield (6.83 t ha-1) and straw yield (7.61 t ha-1) was obtained from poultry manure @ 2.5 t ha-1 + 50% prilled urea and full dose of inorganic fertilizers with BRRI dhan29 variety. So, BRRI dhan29 with 2.5 t ha-1 poultry manure + 50% prilled urea and full dose of the recommended inorganic fertilizers might be a promising practice for boro rice cultivation.

Boosting crop productivity can be attained through the application of inorganic fertilizer; however, safeguarding the environment for future generations is overbearing especially for continuous increase in the world population. Sustainable crop productivity might be attained through the judicious use of both organic and inorganic fertilizers. The substitution of parts of inorganic fertilizers with organic fertilizer could maintain and sustain soil productivity and improve crop productivity. This paper has reviewed the past research work carried out by various scientists. A comprehensive literature review revealed that integrated nutrient management enhances maize yield, nutrient uptake, and economic return compared with the sole application of organic and inorganic fertilizers.

Field experiment was conducted at the research farm of Regional Agriculture Research Station (RARS), Khajura to evaluate the influence of integrated nutrient management options that could enhance the properties of soil and yield of potato under the different climatic conditions of Khajura. The experiment was started in November 2016 in randomized complete block design with different seven treatments of nutrients using Farm yard manure (FYM), Poultry manure (PM) Vermicompost (VC). Available N, P and K status in the soil increased gradually due to the application of inorganic and organic fertilizers. The plots receiving 50 % RDNPK through inorganic fertilizers and remaining 50% RDN through PM registered the highest available N, P and K status in the soil. The highest pH (6.3) content in soil was found in plots treatments with poultry manure and inorganic fertilizers. Potato plots treated with FYM and inorganic fertilizers produced higher SOM content in soil after harvest (2.38%) as compared to control plots (2.09%). The treatments integrated with FYM show less bulk density than the control plot. Organic manures treated plots produce taller plants as compared plots receiving inorganic fertilizers only. Integrated use of 50 % recommended dose of NPK through inorganic fertilizers and remaining 50% RDN through PM produced higher numbers of tubers per plot (304 tubers per plot) and total tuber yield (22.86 tha-1). A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of integrated nutrient management modules on garlic yield, nutrient uptake, and pungency during 2011-12 and 2012-13. The experiment consisted of nine treatments that were performed in randomized block design with three replications. Integration of inorganic fertilizers, farm yard manure (FYM) and vermicompost (VC) or poultry manure (PM) or integration of inorganic fertilizers with FYM, VC and PM increased garlic yield by 6.5-7.9 per cent compared to inorganic fertilizers alone and 9.9-11.2 per cent compared to integrated use of single source of organic manure, biofertilizers, and inorganic fertilizers. Pyruvic acid content was higher in the plots received integrated use of inorganic fertilizers, organic manures, and biofertilizers increased soil organic carbon, and maintained soil fertility status compared to pre-planting soil test values. INM treatments had higher levels of nutrient uptake compared to the treatments received inorganic fertilizers alone. This result indicate that the farmers could save 25 per cent inorganic fertilizers and organic manures by integrating inorganic fertilizers, FYM with VC or PM, or by integrating inorganic fertilizers, FYM, VC, and PM.

A long term field experiment was started in 1989 on alluvial soil of Inceptisol at Agronomy Research Farm, Khumaltar, Lalitpur to evaluate the effects of organic and inorganic fertilizers on soil properties and yields of rice under ricewheat cropping sequence. Rice yield was monitored from 1998 to 2003. Chianung-242 rice variety was used as a test crop for all of the five years of experimentation. All the treatments manifested significant increase in rice yield over control. Results showed highest significant grain yield of 7.9 tons ha-1 from the sole application of farmyard manure (FYM) @ 10 tons ha-1. The long-term experiment exhibited that the balanced application of chemical fertilizers alone did not sustain soil productivity under continuous cropping system. Application of 100 kg N ha-1 alone produced the yield up to 7.2 tons ha-1 whereas phosphorus and potassium did not affect the yields in most of the years. None of the soil properties, soil pH, organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorus and potassium were affected by application of balanced fertilizers while with the application of 10 tons FYM ha-1, the total nitrogen, available phosphorus and organic carbon contents in the soil were improved as compared to other treatments. The efficiency of fertilizers and manure was influenced by the amount of rainfall received as reflected by the higher grain yield during the higher rainfall years. A field experiment on integrated nutrient management (INM) for Potato-Maize-T. Aman cropping pattern was conducted at BRRI RS farm, Rangpur (AEZ-3) during 2007-2010. The objectives were to examine the effect of Potato-Maize-T. Aman cropping on soil fertility and to develop appropriate fertilizer management practices for the above mentioned pattern. Inorganic and organic nutrient sources were tested in six different combinations in Rangpur region. Poultry manure (PM) @ 3.0 t ha-1 + IPNS based inorganic fertilizers for potato (N80, P0, K30, S0, Zn0, Mg4, B1) and maize (N136, P0, K40, S2, Zn1.8, Mg2, B1) crops, and STB dose for T. Aman crop (N65, P3, K27, S8) has been recommended for Potato-Maize-T. Aman cropping pattern in Rangpur region. In fertilized plots, there was an apparent negative balance for N and K. The balances for P and S were positive. Organic C, total N and available P in soil increased due to integration of chemical fertilizer with PM. Results indicate that it is necessary to apply organic manure in combination with chemical fertilizer for sustaining soil fertility. For maize and potato crops, fertilizer dose needs to be updated after every three years of successive crop cultivation under Potato-Maize-T. Aman cropping pattern.
