Purple Alfalfa is an inexpensive, abundant, readily available lignocellulosic material. This work was attempted to develop an efficient combination pretreatment by sequential HClO4–ethyl glycol–H2O (1.2:88.8:10, w/w/w) extraction at 130 °C in 0.5 h and urea/NaOH (urea 12 wt%, NaOH 7 wt%) soaking at −20 °C for 0.5 h for the pretreatment of purple alfalfa. The porosity, morphology, and crystallinity of pretreated purple alfalfa were characterized with SEM, FM, XRD, and FTIR. This combination pretreatment had a significant influence on hemicellulose removal and delignification. The above changes could enhance cellulose accessibility to enzymes and improve the enzymatic digestibility of cellulose. High yields of reducing sugars from pretreated purple alfalfa were obtained at 93.4%. In summary, this combination pretreatment has high potential application in the future.

: An efficient synthesis of 4-arylidene-3-alkylisoxazole-5(4H)-ones has been implemented via the three-component cyclocondensation of aryl(heteroaryl)aldehydes with hydroxylamine hydrochloride and β-ketoesters. The potassium 2,5-dioxoimidazolidin-1-ide has been introduced as the new organocatalyst to facilitate of this heterocyclization. In the current process, three starting materials, including substituted benzaldehydes/heterocyclic aromatic aldehydes, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, and ethyl acetoacetate/propyl acetoacetate/butyryl acetoacetate have been successfully used for the synthesize of the number of substituted isoxazole-5(4H)-ones in good to high yields in ethylene glycol as a green reaction medium at 80 ºC. The low catalyst loading is also a main advantage over the some reported catalysts.

In this paper, we successfully designed a pH-responsive micelles based on hybrid polypeptide copolymers of poly (L-lysine-4-Azepan-1-yl-butyric)-b-poly (ethylene glycol)-b-poly (L-lysine-Diisopropylamide)-b-poly (L-leucine) (PLL(A)-PEG-PLL(B)-PLLeu) for efficient drug delivery. This pH-responsive nanoparticles were able to response to different pH values (pH=6.8 and 5.5). In vitro, these nanoparticles exhibited a stable and evenly distributed approximately 51 nm, a slightly positive potential about 10.3 mv at pH 7.4, which were crucial for the circulation of drugs in blood. While size and potential were about 130 nm and 34.7 mv at pH 6.8, which were good for drugs in membrane. Furthermore, the loading capability of DOX was up to 11.3%, and the pH-responsive release efficiency reached to 68.3% at pH 5.5. The results indicated that these micelles had huge potential application in cancer delivery.

A multiple-layer microcoil is a promising candidate for micromagnetic sensors for probing cracks in pipes in power stations and plants. We proposed fabrication of multiple-layer microcoils combining Al anodic oxidation and photolithography, and conducted experiments with the following results: 1) Sputter-deposited Al was anodically oxidized and thickness of Al2O3 formed controlled by anodic-oxidation time. 2) A pattern with Al and Al2O3 was made by masking Al with photoresist to prevent anodic oxidation. 3) A multiple-layer Al and Al2O3 was fabricated by combining Al anodic oxidation and photolithography. 4) As these results shown, multiple-layer microcoils having both high inductance and low resistance were fabricated as proposed using a simple process and having a high potential application to smaller multiple-layer microcoils.

The influence of six boron treatments (0, 0.1, 0.5, 2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 ppm) on glucosinolates and reducing sugars was studied in tops and roots of hydroponically grown Snow Ball turnip (Brassica rapa L.). The glucosinolates were determined by quantifying their hydrolytic products, 5-vinyl-oxazolidine-2-thione (goitrin), volatile isothiocyanates, and thiocyanate ion. While growth of plants receiving no boron (0 ppm) was drastically impaired, that of plants receiving 0.1–5.0 ppm boron was equally vigorous; growth was slightly inhibited with 10.0 ppm boron. Mild boron deficiency was manifested as brown-heart in roots of fully-sized turnips from the 0.1 ppm boron treatment although there was no apparent effect on external root appearance or on foliage and plant growth. In roots of boron-deficient turnips, elevated yields of goitrin were found, accompanied by relatively high yields of thiocyanate ion and low contents of reducing sugars.

An efficient and convenient approach for the synthesis of thiazole derivatives from α-halo ketones, thiosemicarbazide, and o-hydroxybenzaldehydes in poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-400) is described. The preparation procedure presented is operationally simple and environmentally benign. Some of the major advantages of this procedure are high yields and ease of operation.
