In this paper, we report the use of magnesium alloy (AZ31B) as the matching material for PZT-5H ultrasonic transducers. The AZ31B has an acoustic impedance of 10.3 MRayl, which provides a good acoustic impedance match for PZT-5H ultrasonic transducers in water medium based on the double matching layer theory. Two PZT-5H transducers with different center frequencies were designed and fabricated using the AZ31B. The respective center frequencies of the two fabricated transducers were 4.6 MHz and 9.25 MHz. The 4.6 MHz transducer exhibits a −6 dB bandwidth of 79% and two-way insertion loss of −11.11 dB. The 9.25 MHz transducer also shows good performance: −6 dB bandwidth of 71% and two-way insertion loss of −14.43 dB. The properties of the two transducers are superior to those of transducers using a composite matching layer, indicating that the magnesium alloy may be a promising alternative for high-performance transducers.

This paper reported that, using the method of double layer composite successfully prepared high performance of electromagnetic wave absorption materials. Such a composite is composed of a cement matching layer filled with expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads and an absorbing cement layer made of EPS beads and carbon black. The samples were tested by arching method in the frequency range of 8~18GHz. The reflectivities were revealed to be excellent, the lowest being-17dB. The new material can be used for building indoor electromagnetic radiation protection.

The high performance diamond brazed saw was developed to cut efficiently AZ31 Magnesium Alloy. The Ti-coated diamond and the uncoated diamond were brazed with NiCr alloy by high-frequency induction under argon atmosphere at 1040°C within 20 seconds. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersion spectrometer (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to investigate the interfacial microstructures between brazed diamond and the filler alloy. The results show that Cr-carbides forms normally and compactly on the surface of Ti-coated diamond brazed, whereas Cr-carbide forms tangentially and loosely on the surface of uncoated diamond brazed. That is because Ti has changed the mechanism of Cr-carbides formed on the surface of diamond brazed. The test of cutting AZ31 magnesium alloy plate shows that the section cut by Ti-coated diamond saw is much smoother than that cut by uncoated diamond saw after a long time.
