This work is focused on creating an open-source software-based solution for monitoring traffic transmitted through gigabit passive optical network. In this case, the data are captured by the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) card and reassembled using parsing software from a passive optical network built on the International Telecommunication Unit telecommunication section (ITU-T) G.984 gigabit-capable passive optical network GPON recommendation. Then, the captured frames are converted by suitable software into GPON frames, which will be further processed for analysis. Due to the high transfer rate of GPON recommendations, the work describes the issue of writing to the Mongo database system. In order to achieve the best possible results and minimal loss of transmitted frames, a series of tests were performed. The proposed test scenarios are based on different database writing approaches and are implemented in the Python and C# programming languages. Based on our results, it has been shown that the high processing speed is too high for Python processing. Critical operations must be implemented in the C# programming language. Due to rapid application development, Python can only be used for noncritical time-consuming data processing operations.

Competition for delivering high-bandwidth "multi-play" services (video, voice, data) is on constant increase. Advanced service delivery requires a higher bandwidth pipe to the end user through passive optical network (PON) technologies. The two major PON standards GPON is an International Telecommunication Union - Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) and EPON is a standard developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). This project compares and looks at the choices and challenges service providers face as they bring new PON technology possibilities to their customers and analyze these two standards in terms of their performance, physical properties, implementation and testing requirements. It also discusses the evolution paths for each of the standards and the challenges for such evolution. The final chapter will include the conclusions, some final thoughts, suggestions and recommendations for new projects implementation.

The requirements of end users on the quality of Internet connection and services is forcing the Internet providersand technical community to propose and introduce new technologies which may react to this demand. The most promising solution in this regard seems to be a passive optical network. There are many standards and recommendations provided by the organizations IEEE and ITU-T, such as EPON, GEPON, G-PON, XG-PON, and newly added NG-PON2 described in the ITU-T G.989 recommendation. Due to the implementation of TWDM mechanism the recommendation describes additionalcontrol messages to manage the whole network. This leads us to a need for a visualization tool which clearly shows control message flows and events between ONU and OLT units for each state. The application, designed by the authors and developed in C# programming language, is mainly focused on education purposes, but could be also useful to skilled industry professionals and in general those who have read the standard but are not fully familiar with the sequence of data flow in NG-PON2.

The calculations required in project activities for engineering students are commonly performed in electronic spreadsheets. Practice has shown that utilizing those calculations could prove to be quite difficult for students of other fields. One of the causes for such situation (as well as partly for problems observed during Java and C programming languages courses) lies in the lack of a streamlined distribution structure for both the source data and the end results. A solution could be found in utilizing a shared approach for information structuring in spreadsheet and software environment, called “the Book Method”, which takes into account the engineering psychology issues regarding the user friendliness of working with electronic information. This method can be applied at different levels in academic institutions and at teacher training courses.

AbstractFor the effective bearer of P2P-type services, a P2P service bearer reorientation method for passive optical network for long-distance wide access based on P2P protocol message and wire-speed message identification is proposed. However, the reorientation method still has the possibility of relocation failure, so it is modified – that is, an improved P2P service bearer reorientation method based on optical line terminal (OLT) and optical network unit (ONU) cooperation. And the tool NS2 is used for network simulation analysis. Through simulation analysis, it is verified that the modified reorientation method improves the data traffic burden at the core network and at the OLT.
