The number of wheat ears is an essential indicator for wheat production and yield estimation, but accurately obtaining wheat ears requires expensive manual cost and labor time. Meanwhile, the characteristics of wheat ears provide less information, and the color is consistent with the background, which can be challenging to obtain the number of wheat ears required. In this paper, the performance of Faster regions with convolutional neural networks (Faster R-CNN) and RetinaNet to predict the number of wheat ears for wheat at different growth stages under different conditions is investigated. The results show that using the Global WHEAT dataset for recognition, the RetinaNet method, and the Faster R-CNN method achieve an average accuracy of 0.82 and 0.72, with the RetinaNet method obtaining the highest recognition accuracy. Secondly, using the collected image data for recognition, the R2 of RetinaNet and Faster R-CNN after transfer learning is 0.9722 and 0.8702, respectively, indicating that the recognition accuracy of the RetinaNet method is higher on different data sets. We also tested wheat ears at both the filling and maturity stages; our proposed method has proven to be very robust (the R2 is above 90). This study provides technical support and a reference for automatic wheat ear recognition and yield estimation.

Protest event analysis is an important method for the study of collective action and social movements and typically draws on traditional media reports as the data source. We introduce collective action from social media (CASM)—a system that uses convolutional neural networks on image data and recurrent neural networks with long short-term memory on text data in a two-stage classifier to identify social media posts about offline collective action. We implement CASM on Chinese social media data and identify more than 100,000 collective action events from 2010 to 2017 (CASM-China). We evaluate the performance of CASM through cross-validation, out-of-sample validation, and comparisons with other protest data sets. We assess the effect of online censorship and find it does not substantially limit our identification of events. Compared to other protest data sets, CASM-China identifies relatively more rural, land-related protests and relatively few collective action events related to ethnic and religious conflict.

Thyroid nodule is a clinical disorder with a high incidence rate, with large number of cases being detected every year globally. Early analysis of a benign or malignant thyroid nodule using ultrasound imaging is of great importance in the diagnosis of thyroid cancer. Although the b-mode ultrasound can be used to find the presence of a nodule in the thyroid, there is no existing method for an accurate and automatic diagnosis of the ultrasound image. In this pursuit, the present study envisaged the development of an ultrasound diagnosis method for the accurate and efficient identification of thyroid nodules, based on transfer learning and deep convolutional neural network. Initially, the Total Variation- (TV-) based self-adaptive image restoration method was adopted to preprocess the thyroid ultrasound image and remove the boarder and marks. With data augmentation as a training set, transfer learning with the trained GoogLeNet convolutional neural network was performed to extract image features. Finally, joint training and secondary transfer learning were performed to improve the classification accuracy, based on the thyroid images from open source data sets and the thyroid images collected from local hospitals. The GoogLeNet model was established for the experiments on thyroid ultrasound image data sets. Compared with the network established with LeNet5, VGG16, GoogLeNet, and GoogLeNet (Improved), the results showed that using GoogLeNet (Improved) model enhanced the accuracy for the nodule classification. The joint training of different data sets and the secondary transfer learning further improved its accuracy. The results of experiments on the medical image data sets of various types of diseased and normal thyroids showed that the accuracy rate of classification and diagnosis of this method was 96.04%, with a significant clinical application value.

Recently, convolutional neural networks have demonstrated excellent performance on various visual tasks, including the classification of common two-dimensional images. In this paper, deep convolutional neural networks are employed to classify hyperspectral images directly in spectral domain. More specifically, the architecture of the proposed classifier contains five layers with weights which are the input layer, the convolutional layer, the max pooling layer, the full connection layer, and the output layer. These five layers are implemented on each spectral signature to discriminate against others. Experimental results based on several hyperspectral image data sets demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve better classification performance than some traditional methods, such as support vector machines and the conventional deep learning-based methods.

Using x-rays in the medical field is a faster, easier and harmless method that can be utilized in many ways. One of the most frequently used methods in image classification is convolutional neural networks (CNN). CNN is a type of neural network that is often used in image data and is often used in detecting and recognizing objects in an image. The architectural model in the CNN method can also be developed with transfer learning which is the process of reusing pre-trained models that are trained on large datasets, usually on the task of classifying large-scale images. This literature review review is used to analyze the use of transfer learning on CNN as a method that can be used to detect covid-19 on chest x-ray images. Several kinds of pretrained convolutional neural networks (CNN) exist nowadays. Utilizing these networks with the new classification task requires the retraining with new data sets. With the small embedded device, large network cannot be implemented. The authors study the use of pretrained models and customizing them towards accuracy and size against face recognition tasks. The results show 1) the performance of existing pretrained networks (e.g., AlexNet, GoogLeNet, CaffeNet, SqueezeNet), as well as size, and 2) demonstrate the layers customization towards the model size and accuracy. The studied results show that among the various networks with different data sets, SqueezeNet can achieve the same accuracy (0.99) as others with small size (up to 25 times smaller). Secondly, the two customizations with layer skipping are presented. The experiments show the example of SqueezeNet layer customizing, reducing the network size while keeping the accuracy (i.e., reducing the size by 7% with the slower convergence time). The experiments are measured based on Caffe 0.15.14.

The present work aimed at the problems of less negative samples and more positive samples in rail fastener fault diagnosis and low detection accuracy of heavy manual patrol inspection tasks. Exploiting the capacity of a Convolution Neural Network (CNN) to process unbalanced data to solve tedious and inefficient manual processing, a fault diagnosis method based on a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) and a Residual Network (ResNet) was developed. First, GAN was used to track the distribution of rail fastener failure data. To study the noise distribution, the mapping relationship between image data was established. Additional real fault samples were then generated to balance and extend the existing data sets, and these data sets were used as input to ResNet for recognition and detection training. Finally, the average accuracy of multiple experiments was used as the evaluation index. The experimental results revealed that the fault diagnosis of rail fastener based on GAN and ResNet could improve the fault detection accuracy in the case of a serious shortage of fault data.

The advantage of adversarial domain adaptation is that it uses the idea of adversarial adaptation to confuse the feature distribution of two domains and solve the problem of domain transfer in transfer learning. However, although the discriminator completely confuses the two domains, adversarial domain adaptation still cannot guarantee the consistent feature distribution of the two domains, which may further deteriorate the recognition accuracy. Therefore, in this article, we propose a deep adversarial domain adaptation network, which optimises the feature distribution of the two confused domains by adding multi-kernel maximum mean discrepancy to the feature layer and designing a new loss function to ensure good recognition accuracy. In the last part, some simulation results based on the Office-31 and Underwater data sets show that the deep adversarial domain adaptation network can optimise the feature distribution and promote positive transfer, thus improving the classification accuracy.
