Relations among neighbors are a key indicator of the strength of a local social community, contribute to social cohesion and are an important factor in achieving a higher level of social sustainability. On the other hand, the environment in which people live plays an important role in encouraging social contacts and developing relationships between people. In order to establish social interactions between neighbors within a multifamily apartment building (MFAB), it is necessary to provide adequate spaces for communication between residents. This was especially emphasized during the mobility restrictions caused by COVID-19, although this necessity is permanent. This paper analyzes the influence of the physical characteristics of common spaces in MFABs on the quality and intensity of contacts among residents of MFABs in the City of Niš, Serbia. In order to determine the current quality of these spaces as a physical framework for interactions among residents and to identify the wishes of users regarding interactions with neighbors in these spaces before and during COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, a survey was conducted. The analysis of the survey results and numerous examples of housing design led to (1) the formation of guidelines for future designs of MFABs and (2) recommendations for redefining the standards regulating the field of housing construction in the region, both applicable during the period of the pandemic and after it.

In Bandung, Indonesia, urban expansion, rapid economic growth, and population increase present enormous challenges to the maintenance of a high quality of life (QOL) for its citizens. Moreover, income distribution in the city has become more unequal, thereby threatening social cohesion. Such situations led us to investigate the states and correlation of social cohesion and QOL in Bandung. In 2018, we conducted a questionnaire survey of social cohesion and QOL using 13 and 18 question items, respectively. We employed the Rasch model analysis to analyze the logit measures of 752 responses. The results revealed that the population of Bandung has high social cohesion and decent QOL. Our findings suggest that in Bandung QOL is significantly correlated with social cohesion, therefore strategies that seek to enhance social cohesion may be beneficial to improve the QOL.

As the world becomes increasingly urbanised, cities are forced to manage significant population increases. Jakarta, in Indonesia, has a significant population that is visibly living below the poverty line which suggests the city was not fully prepared to accommodate the radical growth. With such a large number of people living in poverty, and there being a lack of affordable housing Jakarta faces an issue where a significant number of these people are forced to live in informal settlements, which are spread throughout the city. These informal settlements, known as Kampungs are typically made up of dense clusters of single or two story residential structures packed together in communal areas. The erection of these houses often results in unplanned but functional networks of footpaths. These urban arrangements normally have a lack of sanitary infrastructure. The government’s current plans to mitigate this issue are by forced evictions, and moving the informal settlement residents into subsidised social housing apartment buildings. Generally, people are against these forced evictions and in many cases they are forced to leave, or simply rebuild on top of the rubble of their old homes. How can architecture support the existing social connections within the community, while improving the living conditions of the residents in the informal settlements of Jakarta? This research proposes a community centre design which is able to provide necessary facilities to the informal settlements. Although the residents are not in need of a new housing design, this research focuses on providing facilities to improve the quality of life. The research takes into account extensive site, literature, and precedent analysis; to develop a design criteria which aims to produce positive neighbourhood development. Traditional Indonesian architecture has a heavy influence on the form and construction material, with the intention to give the opportunity for the community to get involved in the construction and maintenance of the building. The final design result is a community centre with a large auditorium space for community gatherings, and support spaces which include emergency accommodation, teaching facilities, exhibition space, workshop space, sanitary facilities, recycling management centre, and retail spaces. This architectural intervention provides a place for the community to come together and to have a better quality of life while still being able to live in their personally constructed and designed homes.

– Within the last 20 years, there has been witnessed a significant increase of the urban population of Sarajevo, as a result of economic and social migrations. Consequently, this has caused an increasing demand for new housing which is mainly profit-oriented without any beneficial social, environmental or cultural implication. Primary objective of this research is to analyze the current situation and to assess the quality of the buildings not only as a housing solution, but as a complex that unites the community who inhabits it. This research will be conducted in a qualitative manner in analysis and statistical approach over the data related to the urbanization, building standards and positive effects of the building. Newly built parts of settlements Otoka and Stup will be used as case studies, since these parts of the city are most influenced by the mass production of the new housing solutions. This paper stresses out the correlation between high demand for the new housing and decreased quality of the housing without respecting minimum spatial and environmental standards, without basic amenities, social infrastructure and recreational and cultural activities. There is a need for improvements in contemporary housing design that will reflect with positive impacts on social, environmental, economic and cultural aspects of urban living.

The article examines the leisure patterns in Bulgaria in comparison with other EU countries, analyzing data from Eurostat, National Statistical Institute, European Quality of Life Survey, results from the project "Local festivals: A resource of local communities for coping with crises", etc. Bulgarians actively use the internet and social networks, but we have the difficulties to achieve a balance between work, family, and social contacts. Low incomes negatively affect leisure activities by limiting them in order to meet the basic needs of the households. Lockdown, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, led to an increase in leisure time, but the possibilities for its use have significantly decreased. The extensive use of telework blurs the boundaries between working time and leisure.

Binjai is one of the cities included in the Mebidangro development project which includes Medan City, Binjai City, Deli Serdang Regency, and Karo Regency. Strategic location located on the road cross Sumatera make Binjai City a prosperous city in its development. The economic condition of the city of Binjai in the previous few years continues to increase, in the sector of Large and Retail Trade. Based on survey results, the city of Binjai still needs a center of excellence and recreational facilities such as cinemas and eating places to improve the economic quality of the city. The adhesive of East Binjai Shopping and Recreation Center is expected to meet those needs. The hot temperature of the city of Binjai becomes the designer's choice of theme "Green Architecture" as the design theme. It is considered very suitable for heat temperature to the building. A design approach that carries the theme of Green Architecture can create environmentally friendly buildings. Implementation of this theme is also useful to save the operational costs of the building.
