Digital rock images may capture more detailed pore structure than the traditional laboratory methods. No explicit function can correlate permeability accurately for flow within the pore space. This has motivated researchers to predict permeability through the application of numerical techniques, e.g., using the finite difference method (FDM). However, in order to get better permeability calculation results, the grid refinement was needed for the traditional FDM and the accuracy of the traditional method decreased in pores with elongated cross sections. The goal of this study is to develop an improved FDM (IFDM) to calculate the permeabilities of digital rock images with complex pore space. An elliptical pore approximation method is invoked to describe the complex pore space. The permeabilities of four types of idealized porous media are calculated by IFDM. The calculated results are in sound agreement with the analytical solutions or semi-empirical solutions. What’s more, the permeabilities of the digital rock images after grid coarsening are calculated by IFDM in three orthogonal directions. These results are compared with the previously validated lattice-Boltzmann method (LBM), which indicates that the predicted permeabilities calculated by IFDM usually agree with permeabilities calculated by LBM. We conclude that the presented IFDM is suitable for complex pore space.

Currently, the forest biomass energy development is at an initial stage and the estimation method for the forest biomass energy resource reserve is to be unified and refined although there is a great value and potential in the development and utilization of forest biomass energy in China. Based on the existing studies, the present paper analyzes the origins and types of forest biomass energy resources in the perspective of sustainable forestry management, constructs the estimation model using a bottom-up approach, and estimates the total existing forest biomass energy resource reserve in China based on the data of the 7th Forest Resource Survey. The estimation method and the calculation results provide the important theoretical ground for promoting the rational development of forest biomass energy in China.

Spectroscopic properties of neodymium-doped yttrium lithium fluoride were measured at different temperatures from 35 K to 350 K in specimens with 1 at% Nd3+ concentration. The absorption spectrum was measured at room temperature from 400 to 900 nm. The decay dynamics of the 4F3/2 multiplet was investigated by measuring the fluorescence lifetime as a function of the sample temperature, and the radiative decay time was derived by extrapolation to 0 K. The stimulated-emission cross-sections of the transitions from the 4F3/2 to the 4I9/2, 4I11/2, and 4I13/2 levels were obtained from the fluorescence spectrum measured at different temperatures, using the Aull–Jenssen technique. The results show consistency with most results previously published at room temperature, extending them over a broader range of temperatures. A semi-empirical formula for the magnitude of the stimulated-emission cross-section as a function of temperature in the 250 K to 350 K temperature range, is presented for the most intense transitions to the 4I11/2 and 4I13/2 levels.

It is difficult to have enough samples to implement the full-scale life test on the loader drive axle due to high cost. But the extreme small sample size can hardly meet the statistical requirements of the traditional reliability analysis methods. In this work, the method of combining virtual sample expanding with Bootstrap is proposed to evaluate the fatigue reliability of the loader drive axle with extreme small sample. First, the sample size is expanded by virtual augmentation method to meet the requirement of Bootstrap method. Then, a modified Bootstrap method is used to evaluate the fatigue reliability of the expanded sample. Finally, the feasibility and reliability of the method are verified by comparing the results with the semi-empirical estimation method. Moreover, from the practical perspective, the promising result from this study indicates that the proposed method is more efficient than the semi-empirical method. The proposed method provides a new way for the reliability evaluation of costly and complex structures.

To investigate the microscopic second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) behavior of the 1-salicylidene-3-thio-semicarbazone Schiff base compound, the electric dipole moments (μ), linear static polarizabilities (α) and first static hyperpolarizabilites (β) have been calculated using finite field second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation (FF MP2) theory. The ab-initio results on (hyper)polarizabilities show that the investigated molecule might have microscopic NLO properties with non-zero values. To understand the NLO behavior in the context of molecular orbital structure, we have also examined the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and the HOMO-LUMO gap in the same theoretical framework as the (hyper)polarizability calculations. In addition to the NLO properties, the electronic transition spectra have been computed using a semi-empirical method (ZINDO). ZINDO calculation results show that the electronic transition wavelengths have been estimated to be shorter than 400 nm.

Knowledge of inner-shell ionization cross sections by electron impact is needed for quantitative procedures in electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) The common practice is to use semi-empirical formulas, based on the asymptotic limit of the Bethe theory, which sometimes are used beyond their domain of validity. Experimental measurements of ionization cross sections are scarce and affected by considerable uncertainties, thus a mere comparison with experimental data does not permit to draw a definite conclusion abou the accuracy of the various formulas. In this communication, we present new measurements o the relative variation of K- and L-shell ionization cross sections deduced from the counting rate of characteristic x-rays emitted by extremely thin films of Cr, Ni, Cu, Te, Au and Bi bombardec by keV electrons. The studied films were produced by thermal evaporation on backing self-supported 30 nm carbon films.

The land use limitations, especially for onshore applications, have led modern Wind Turbines (WTs) to be aggregated in wind parks under the scope of minimizing the necessary area required. Within this framework, the trustworthy prediction of the wind speed deficiency downstream the WTs' hub (known also as the “wake effect”) and the meticulous wind park micrositing are of uppermost importance for the optimized WTs siting across the available land area. In this context, substantial effort has been made by the academic and research community, contributing to the deployment of several analytical, numerical and semi-empirical wake models, attempting to estimate the wind speed values at different locations downstream a WT. The accuracy of several semi-empirical and analytical wake models, serving also as the basis for pertinent commercial software development, is investigated in the present work, by comparing their outcome with experimental data from a past research work that concerns the wake flow. The dimensionless streamwise distance (known also with the term “downstream distance”) from the WT's hub is used as benchmark in order to categorize and evaluate the calculation results. A dedicated comparison between the wind speed cases investigated is conducted, striving to properly assess the wake models' prediction accuracy. The notable findings obtained for the wake models examined designate the requirement for subsequent research to enlighten the wake effect dynamic behavior.

Summary With advancements in technology and computational capacity, the method of digital rock physics (DRP) for characterizing the storage and flow properties of a reservoir is gradually taking up the space that was once dominated by conventional methods such as routine core analysis (RCA) and special core analysis (SCAL). Unlike RCA and SCAL, the DRP method provides a nondestructive approach to deal with the core samples, which in a way is also more repeatable, economic, and is a clear improvement over the existing conventional methods in terms of its flexibility to experience the multiphysics of the rock and fluids. However, DRP still has some lacunae because the available algorithms have limitations in handling various challenges of complex lithology, such as grain/pore-boundary transition, soft/hard-matter transition, and imprints of intensity gradients of a 3D structure on 2D slices. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed a new approach to handle multiple issues by optimizing the segmentation algorithms and putting them together to standardize workflows (WFs) for reliable determination of the pore volume (PV), which could be verified with the field observation of porosity obtained using industry-standard laboratory methods and well logs. More emphasis was placed on the adaptability of the WF to deal with varying heterogeneity in the rocks. In this work, we proposed five WFs and compared them with the standard algorithms (including edge detections, watershed, and global thresholding) in terms of accuracy and computation time for a set of four homogeneous and four heterogeneous samples. We found that WF3 was the one that consistently performed better than all other WFs and some of the popular algorithms when compared one to one. We used a data-conditioning filter, contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE)—a practice used in medical imagery—for local contrast enhancement in the heterogeneous carbonates to increase the signal/noise ratio of the rock-sample images. It successfully handled the contrast variability caused by the pockets of low illumination in the heterogeneous samples. Its limitation has also been detailed in the paper.
