This article analyzes a system of virtual attendance, called “AVIP” (AudioVisual over Internet Protocol), at the Spanish Open University (UNED) in Spain. UNED, the largest open university in Europe, is the pioneer in distance education in Spain. It currently has more than 300,000 students, 1,300 teachers, and 6,000 tutors all over the world, besides Spain. This university is redefining, on the lines of other universities, many of its academic processes to meet the new requirements of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). Since its inception, more than 30 years ago, the methodology chosen by UNED has been blended learning. Today, this university combines face-to-face tutorial sessions with new methodological proposals, mediated by ICT. Through a quantitative methodology, the perception of students and tutors of the new model of virtual tutoring, called AVIP Classrooms, was analyzed. The results show that the new model greatly improves the orientation and teaching methodology of tutors. However, it requires training and new approaches to provide a more collaborative and participatory environment for students.

Multiple successful experiences in overcoming the challenges of offering urgent distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic have been reported in international literature. However, the use of distance learning in pharmaceutical education all over the world is both recent and limited to a supporting role in face-to-face classes. The migration of all pedagogical activities to the distance learning mode in Brazil raises particular worries. It is necessary to analyse the scenarios of the pandemic and of higher education in Brazil, as well as the scenario of pharmaceutical education, to understand the concerns of professors and students. This understanding is also key to glimpse ways of surmounting the numerous difficulties presented in these scenarios.

Group cohesion, defined simply as the feeling of camaraderie and shared goals among the members of a class, is a fundamental goal of language teachers in Japan and around the world. The body of work on group cohesion in face-to-face classes is fairly extensive, but as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the majority of university educators in Japan were forced to shift to some form of distance learning. This study considers the issue of how instructors were able to create and maintain group cohesion in online courses, and to what extent face-to-face classes could be replicated online. Twenty-seven university instructors responded to the survey, which consisted of several open-ended questions. The results of that survey are reported here, along with recommendations the researchers were able to assemble based on survey feedback.

The coronavirus pandemic is crippling the world, and is also shaking up standard university practice. Digital technology has made live distance learning and e-learning possible and feasible. This is an effective remedy to the major challenge of maintaining foreign language provision in the context of a pandemic. However, from face-to-face to distance learning, EFL teachers are suddenly faced with an unexpected shift. No doubt our teaching practices must finally evolve, in order to gradually lead our students towards autonomy. But long before this goal is reached, we must face a no less important challenge: to set up a distance assessment system so that our end-of-semester or end-of-year exams can take place. Which platforms and tools should we use? Which examination modes should be chosen for which courses? What training should be provided to teachers? How to guarantee and measure the objectivity, fairness, reliability and feasibility of the distance examination? These are some of the parameters to be considered while systematically looking at the changes that may occur in future assessments.
