Background. The interrelation of disorders in periodontal tissues with metabolic changes caused, in particular, by a violation of microcirculation, observed namely in smoking but the fact that the effect of smoking on the condition of periodontal tissues at a young age has been studied less than other risk factors deserves special attention. The aim of our study was to experimentally assess the effect of smoking on the morphofunctional state of periodontal tissues in young animals. Materials and methods. Simulation of smoking has been performed with ten-week-old WAG rats using the Boyarchuck chamber. Morphometric studies were performed in the gingival zone which was chosen for morphological interpretation of volumes of specific vascular density in microcirculatory bed, specific density of connective tissue in lamina propria and specific area of tissue with ischemia. The obtained digital data were processed by the methods of variation statistics. Results. Simulation of smoking for four weeks in experimental animals leads to pathological changes in the morphofunctional state of the periodontium with reducing vascular density from 19.44±1.97% to 11.03±1.38 %, increasing area of connective tissue from 18.33±2.71% to 26.49±1.24%, spreading area of tissue with ischemia from 1.14±0.70% to 6.35±1.67%. Conclusions. Morphofunctional changes in the periodontium with damage to the structure of the epithelial membrane and changes in its permeability, microcirculatory disorders, sclerotic changes are a manifestation of the initial inflammatory and dystrophic processes that can lead to persistent chronic pathology.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children who use spoken language face unique challenges when communicating with others who have typical hearing, particularly their peers. In such contexts, the social use of language has been recognized as an area of vulnerability among individuals in this population and has become a focus for research and intervention. The development of pragmatic skills intersects with many aspects of child development, including emotional intelligence and executive function, as well as social and emotional development. While all these areas are important, they are beyond the scope of this chapter, which highlights the impact of pragmatics on the specific area of cognition. Cognitive pragmatics is broadly defined as the study of the mental processes involved in the understanding of meaning in the context of a cooperative interaction. This chapter explores how DHH children and young people construe meaning in the context of conversations and expository interactions with their peers. The chapter aims to examine the role played by the cognitive processes of making inferences and comprehending implicature, within the overall display of pragmatic skills. Further, the authors use this lens in the analysis of interactions between DHH children and their peers in order to shed light on the development of pragmatic skills in children who are DHH.

AbstractNeural interfaces are bioelectronic devices capable of stimulating a population of neurons or nerve fascicles and recording electrical signals in a specific area. Despite their success in restoring sensory-motor functions in people with disabilities, their long-term exploitation is still limited by poor biocompatibility, mechanical mismatch between the device and neural tissue and the risk of a chronic inflammatory response upon implantation. In this context, the use of nature-derived materials can help address these issues. Examples of these materials, such as extracellular matrix proteins, peptides, lipids and polysaccharides, have been employed for decades in biomedical science. Their excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability in the absence of toxic compound release, physiochemical properties that are similar to those of human tissues and reduced immunogenicity make them outstanding candidates to improve neural interface biocompatibility and long-term implantation safety. The objective of this review is to highlight progress and challenges concerning the impact of nature-derived materials on neural interface design. The use of these materials as biocompatible coatings and as building blocks of insulation materials for use in implantable neural interfaces is discussed. Moreover, future perspectives are presented to show the increasingly important uses of these materials for neural interface fabrication and their possible use for other applications in the framework of neural engineering.

The periostin is a matricellular protein expressed in collagen-rich tissues including some dental and periodontal tissues where it is regulated by mechanical forces, growth factors and cytokines. Interestingly the expression of this protein has been found modified in different gingival pathologies although the expression of periostin in normal human gingiva was never investigated. Here we used Western blot and double immunofluorescence coupled to laser-confocal microscopy to investigated the occurrence and distribution of periostin in different segments of the human gingival in healthy subjects. By Western blot a protein band with an estimated molecular mass of 94 kDa was observed. Periostin was localized at the epithelial-connective tissue junction, or among the fibers of the periodontal ligament, and never co-localized with cytokeratin or vimentin thus suggesting it is an extracellular protein. These results demonstrate the occurrence of periostin in adult human gingiva; its localization suggests a role in the bidirectional interactions between the connective tissue and the epithelial cells, and therefore in the physiopathological conditions in which these interactions are altered.

An emerging literature has shown concerns about the impact of the pandemic on the proliferation of digital surveillance. Contributing to these debates, in this paper we demonstrate how the pandemic facilitates digital surveillance in three ways: (1) By shifting everyday communication to digital means it contributes to the generation of extensive amounts of data susceptible to surveillance. (2) It motivates the development of new digital surveillance tools. (3) The pandemic serves as a perfect justification for governments to prolong digital surveillance. We provide empirical anecdotes for these three effects by examining reports by the Global Digital Policy Incubator at Stanford University. Building on our argument, we conclude that we might be on the verge of a dangerous normalization of digital surveillance. Thus, we call on scholars to consider the full effects of public health crises on politics and suggest scrutinizing sources of digital data and the complex relationships between the state, corporate actors, and the sub-contractors behind digital surveillance.

Abstract. In connection with the spread of undifferentiated forms of connective tissue dysplasia (UCTD) in unfavorable climatogeographic and environmental conditions, it seems relevant to assess the impact of organogenesis disorders on physical development in schoolchildren living in the northern region. Based on the foregoing, the purpose of this study was to study the relationships and interdependencies of the components of physical development and somatometric indicators in children of the northern region with phenotypic signs of connective tissue dysplasia. Anthropometric indicators were revealed that can be used for express diagnostics of the level of physical development in children with UCTD these are the length of the legs, the thickness of the skin-fat fold on the front surface of the shoulder and the interorbital-circumferential index. When assessing covariants such as age and sex, there is a correlation of clusters of long-length values with age, the relationship of the thickness of the skin-fat folds with the floor, and the parameters assessing changes in the cerebral and facial skull, such as: face width, head circumference and interorbital-circumferential index are associated with both sex and with age. The influence of posture disorders on the studied components of physical development is manifested by higher growth in children with flat and round-curved backs, a decrease in the thickness of skin-fat folds and head size with a round and round-curved back. Thus, for a comparative analysis of gender and age differences in the level of physical development in children with UCTD, it is necessary to take into account the dynamics of interdependent anthropometric indicators and indices, taking into account postural disorders.

This review aims to provide a concise overview of the role of (digital) data and new data practices in schools. By focusing on the impact of data on pedagogical practices, it aims to shed light on how the everyday tasks of teachers and other pedagogical staff in schools are changing, particularly as a result of the generation and use of digital data. For this purpose, existing studies and previous theoretical debates on this topic are examined for their perspectives on data and data practices in schools. The pedagogical data practices of (improving) teaching and learning, assessment and counseling, (data-driven) decision-making, and cooperation and collaboration by “doing data” will be elaborated and discussed. Likewise, data practices that are missing from the studies are identified. We conclude with an overview of blind spots and further research needs.
