This study presents a sustainability competencies map (SCM) for Business Administration and Management (BAM) disciplines as a tool to support education in sustainability at the university level. The study describes in detail the design and elaboration of the map based on the competencies defined by the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE) and complemented with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) adopted by the United Nations. In addition, to externally evaluate the proposed SCM, we conducted a series of interviews with top managers and founders of five organizations that vary in size and industry. As the main contribution, the SCM for BAM studies is presented, containing 58 learning objectives. The qualitative research framework performed to obtain evidence from the interviewees showed that the holistic dimension of the proposed SCM is highly valued by the interviewed practitioners. Additionally, the SCM’s division of competencies into three levels of achievement was considered practical and helpful to measure them. Finally, the interviewees expressed concerns regarding the implementation of the SCM in real classroom, calling for the necessity of special training for teachers and flexibility of higher education system. Reinforced by the interviewees’ opinions, we believe that the SCM for BAM education presented here will facilitate the design of different methodologies by the teaching staff to guide students towards compliance with the 17 SDGs in 2030.

ObjectivesTo explore and reflect on the current anticoagulation therapy offered to patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), potential challenges and the future vision for oral anticoagulants for patients with AF and healthcare professionals in Ireland.DesignA multistakeholder focus group using a World Café approach.ParticipantsNine participants from academic, clinical and health backgrounds attended the focus group together with a facilitator.ResultsEnhanced patient empowerment; more effective use of technology and developing system-based medical care pathways would provide improved supports for AF management. The challenges in providing these include cost and access issues, the doctor–patient relationship and the provision of education. While consensus for developing evidence-based pathways to maximise efficiency and effectiveness of AF treatment was evident, it would require a shared vision between stakeholders of integrated care. The benefits of embracing technological advances for clinicians and patients were evident; however, clinicians indicate this can increase pressure on already stretched resources; coupled with institutional barriers (including scarce resources) arising from the complex nature of anticoagulation for patients with AF, which emerged strongly. Including the unpredictable nature of warfarin, hidden costs associated with monitoring, adverse clinical effects, different patient cohorts (including those prescribed anticoagulant for the first time vs those switching from warfarin to a new oral anticoagulant (NOAC)), non-adherence concerns and undesirable impacts on patients’ daily lives.ConclusionsWhile anticoagulation therapy for patients with AF using NOACs has been widely adopted and is diffusing into routine practice, significant operationalisation issues and barriers to effective treatment/management persist. The reflections reported in this study are a catalyst for future discussion and research.

In the context of dual innovation, the traditional business management personnel training model has been unable to adapt to the market demand in the new economic environment. It is increasingly important for universities to integrate the resources outside the school and gradually explore and form a new model for cultivating innovative and entrepreneurial talents. This paper explores this issue from the aspects of curriculum system construction, teaching staff construction and teaching mode reform, in order to provide reference for the cultivation of business management talents.

Mapping invites school members to be a part of identifying particular problem areas and times in their school. Mapping is another way to collect qualitative data, and the process takes places as part of a special type of focus group. Different groups represent the various members of the school community, such as students, teaching staff, and support staff. Several variations on the actual mapping process exist. School settings may decide to modify some details of the procedure while keeping the essential aspects in mind. The first step is obtaining a map of the school. The map should contain all internal school areas, including those surrounding the school and playground facilities. A sketch that is used for fire drills is detailed enough. In some communities where students walk or bike to the school— and where there are concerns about their safety— a simple map of the surrounding neighborhood can also be used with participants. The maps are essential because they focus the discussion on actual places and times and help avoid abstract and emotional discussions. It’s important for students and other participants to provide useful information, and the maps help to trigger concrete conversations. Figure 11.1 is an example of a map that shows where schools are located within a community and the areas around the schools where students are walking to and from school. Note that this, and all other figures in this chapter were originally in color, which helps to emphasize the content of the maps. Figures 11.2 and 11.3 are additional examples of maps that give students a simple way to identify those areas in the school that they view as safe and inviting and those that they would prefer to avoid. These maps also identify students by grade level so administrators can better understand patterns. Finally, Figure 11.4 is an additional example of a community map that includes schools and other locations where students spend time, such as a park. The streets highlighted are the most common routes that students take to school.

This chapter discusses key findings from three focus group discussions held with practitioners in a higher education institution about their experiences of using learning technologies to support student learning. Focus groups were organised in March 2004 to further explore staff responses to a 2003 campus-wide survey, which gave a general overview of learning technology use among teaching staff. The chapter will examine the key issues that staff raised during the focus group discussions, including the barriers to and implications of introducing and implementing learning technologies into different subject disciplines within a research-led institution. The question of whether or not the use of learning technologies enhances, or has the potential to enhance, the teaching and learning experience is also discussed, as well as the lessons that staff have learnt from this use.

PurposeThird-party arrangements where a university offers its degrees in collaboration with another institution are not a new phenomenon, particularly when the third-party arrangements occur in the form of a cross-border education (or widely known as transnational education). Drawing on a critical review of the literature available on quality assurance of domestic third-party arrangements and through the use of interviews with the sessional teaching staff, the paper offers theoretical as well as practical views on the domestic third-party arrangement and seeks to inform key stakeholders in the academic management of such collaboration.Design/methodology/approachThe study was undertaken with 40 sessional academics who are involved in teaching postgraduate courses at several third-party education providers and universities with metropolitan campuses in Australia. Focus group interviews were conducted with 8–10 participants in each group. The qualitative study included seven open-ended questions. Each focus group interview was between 45–60 minutes.FindingsThe study found 11 universities in Australia offering courses in third-party arrangement with a focus on international students. Online third-party arrangement is also gaining momentum. The study found the following areas that require attention: induction and professional development, quality assurance arrangements, maintenance of standards, adequacy of resources and infrastructure and risk related to academic quality.Research limitations/implicationsLimited study has been conducted on third-party arrangements where a university, usually located far from the city vicinity, works in a collaborative mode with another institution, primarily a private institution, to offer degrees at metropolitan city areas in the same country. Further research is needed with a large number of participants.Originality/valueThe study is undertaken for the first time in Australia. No research has been undertaken on the growth and quality assurance of a third-party arrangement in Australia and other developed countries. The study involves the engagement of the sessional academic staff.
