This study explores the opinions of life and earth sciences teachers about the obstacles related to their formative assessment practices and their suggestions and proposals susceptible to resolving the problem. As part of the skills-based approach, we also want to check the remediation practices - being a necessity - with teachers going through the devices used to reach the limits of this phase. We used a questionnaire addressed to one hundred and fifteen teachers of life and earth sciences working in high schools located in Casablanca and El Jadida Cities (Morocco). The major obstacles encountered by the teachers surveyed when setting up formative evaluations are the non-motivation of learners, the lack of computer equipment, and the heterogeneity of the classes, which pushes them to give proposals related to learners, Teachers, and assessment practices. As for remediation, although it is executed with various tools, it also remains limited by various constraints. Our survey, therefore, reflects the state of a teacher who is limited by obstacles either at the level of formative evaluation or of remediation.

Of all the considerations connected with the study of mathematics, and indeed with the study of any subject, the most important is the mastery of the art of study itself. No topic has been so generally overlooked and neglected heretofore. This neglect is the source of many of our difficulties in teaching, and of many of the criticisms that have been heaped upon the various studies. A supervisor of the high schools of one of our states recently made a general outline for the reorganization of the courses in mathematics for the state. The matter of teaching pupils how to study had been entirely overlooked. His attention was called to the matter, and, realizing its importance, he made it a part of the program. After all, this is the chief thing to be gained from our schools. The pupil must leam the “how.” The “what” is not of so great importance. The “what” frequently changes. The “how” is relatively constant. In other words, the pupil should learn how to attack a problem with economy of time and effort, and with the greatest efficiency. The information he gains in the process is incidental, and illustrative of what he ought to expect as a result of his efforts after he has been trained. It is this sort of training that gives the educated man a measure of his powers, and ability to use these powers in the most effective manner in the various problems which he meets in his daily living. If education fails in this it fails utterly; indeed, it is then not education at all, it is a farce, and the school is a failure. Yet this is the point at which the schools do fail most lamentably. No subject in the high school curriculum is equal to mathematics in its opportunit ies for teaching the art of study. Geometry is especially valuable for this purpose.

Formative assessment is essential for improving student learning. Formative assessment research has predominantly used cognitive learning theories. In this dissertation study, I used sociocultural learning perspectives to understand how formative assessment supported student learning during interaction and how it empowered students. This dissertation included three manuscripts. The first manuscript was a conceptual study. I developed a new formative assessment cycle that was built on sociocultural perspectives and prior formative assessment cycles. The model included four steps: building community, monitoring community, community mediation, and redefining goals. These steps were described in detail with examples, and the roles of the teacher, learners, and peers were discussed. Future researchers may potentially use the model to understand formative assessment practices. Practicing teachers and teacher educators may benefit from the provided examples for classroom implementation of the model. In the empirical part of the dissertation, Chapter Three and Chapter Four, the participant teacher, who was a high school physics teacher, was selected from teachers that had been actively using iPads in their classrooms. This study was conducted at a public high school in the Midwest United States that had a diverse student population. Data were collected across eighteen class sessions. Primary data sources included video recorded observation of class sections, iPad applications, and teacher interviews. Supporting secondary sources included pictures taken during observations, lesson plans, assessment examples, student-works, and student interviews. In the second manuscript, I examined a high school physics teacher's technology enhanced classroom to understand the impact of technology on the teacher's formative assessment practices, and how the iPad influenced the formative assessment process, by using sociocultural learning perspectives. The participant teacher's formative assessment practices were described (members, tools, and classroom norms). Results showed that influences of the iPad on the formative assessment process were: 1) transforming classroom community, 2) empowering students, and 3) facilitating evidence-based discussions. This study shed light on: the impact of technology use on the teacher's formative assessment practice, how the impact rebuilt the classroom norms, and how technology use impacted student identity development. In the third manuscript, I focused on the most important aspect of formative assessment - feedback. I examined how well iPad applications (apps) supported providing feedback. Then, I compared the app affordances with teacher practice. To enable analysis of data, I enhanced Hatzipanagos and Warburton's (2009) feedback dimensions. Analysis revealed app diversity in supporting different feedback dimensions, and the teacher, through additional discussion and interactions with students, was able to support dimensions that an app did not. The provided examples of app affordances and teacher practices may be beneficial to prospective and practicing teachers. Application designers may benefit from this study towards improving their apps to support effective feedback.

This article aims to present the current of formative assessment for the subject of database design for virtual environments where virtual platforms mentioned with conventional assessment strategies for areas related to engineering. Among the main issues focused review of the literature is Bloom's taxonomy, virtual environments, platforms, and educational assessment. From the theoretical point of view focuses on the design theme of the databases, assessment methodologies and the different alternatives for virtual environments, emphasizing resources and forms as encountered today. It also takes into account the role of the student and the teacher in the process of assessment and feedback of learning. After experimenting and evaluating from the point of view formative assessment, both standard platforms, as the projects developed by colleges and universities, it is concluded that the platforms do not even take into account this type of assessment and the results obtained for particular projects, not sufficient to cover actual and complete a process of this type of assessment. Keywords: Virtual Environment, formative evaluation, Designed data base

Formative assessment is ideal for improving teaching and learning processes. However, little is practiced systematically and a traditional approach still persists in many educational institutions that value the product rather than the process. The objective of this study is to determine the evaluative process associated with multiple intelligences in high school students from an Educational Unit in the city of Manta. Methodologically, this research project is of a mixed type with a qualitative-quantitative approach since it obtains real data that evaluates the results. To collect the information, information from primary sources will be used and will be carried out through a survey via Google to teachers and secondary information will be taken from accredited sources of virtual libraries, indexed magazines, and other academic Google publications. The results will be processed using statistical methods that will allow their analysis and interpretation. As a result of it, a set of formative evaluation activities underlying the pedagogical practice of the teacher was obtained, assessing the general process of formative evaluation of learning included in the teaching-learning processes. The process is useful for conducting a conscious and systematic formative assessment.

Background/Context From two decades of research on the grading practices of teachers in secondary schools, researchers discovered that teachers evaluated students on numerous factors that do not validly assess a student's achievement level in a specific content area. These consistent findings suggested that traditional grading practices evolved to meet the variety of educational stakeholder expectations for schools, teachers, and students. Purpose/Objective/Research Question/Focus of Study The purpose of this study was to examine the role of standards-based grading in a high school reform by assessing the relationships between differing grading approaches and standardized test achievement. Setting The study examined student performance from 11 high schools operating in a large metropolitan school district. Population/Participants/Subjects The sample of students included two cohorts of 1,163 and 1,256 11th grade students who completed an Algebra 2 course and the state standardized test. Intervention/Program/Practice Each of the high schools implemented a locally designed reform known as Project Proficiency. A key component of the reform included utilizing standards-based grading to assess student proficiency of the content. Research Design This study utilized a non-equivalent control group design and quantitative analyses to compare the association between classroom grades and standardized test scores. Data Collection and Analysis The data for the study included the students’ final grades, standardized test scores, and basic demographic information. Findings/Results Results indicated that the rate of students earning an A or B in a course and passing the state test approximately doubled when utilizing standards-based grading practices. In addition, results indicated that standards-based grading practices identified more predictive and valid assessment of at-risk students’ attainment of subject knowledge. Conclusions/Recommendations The article demonstrates the benefits of using standards-based grading in reforms attempting to improve the academic performance of secondary schools, but also notes how restriction of grades to mastery of standards will challenge educators’ perception of their abilities and students’ efforts. The article also notes the methodological limitations of prior grading research and suggests the need for more robust studies assessing grading practices, student achievement, and school performance.

The Israeli Jewish educational system offers mandatory religious and heritage education specially tailored to the specific needs of the state religious and state secular sectors of the Israeli population. In both state religious and state secular schools, study about Jewish religion, Jewish tradition, Jewish history, and Jewish culture falls under the category of religious and heritage education and, as such, addresses the normative societal values common to both sectors in Israeli Jewish society. In state religious schools religious and heritage education is both faith and knowledge based and is characterized by an emphasis on religious themes underlying societal values, whereas in state secular schools religious and heritage education is entirely knowledge based with emphasis on the secular character of societal values. In the present study a questionnaire designed to examine the values of Jewish identity, Jewish tradition, Jewish peoplehood, humanism and universalism was administered to 84 eleventh grade students in Israeli state religious and state secular high schools. Results of the study indicate that while students in the state religious high school hold significantly more intense attitudes toward Jewish identity, Jewish peoplehood and Jewish tradition, students in the state secular high school exhibited significantly more intense attitudes toward humanism and universalism. The results of the study were explained in light of the different emphases characterizing religious and heritage education studied in state religious and state secular high schools and the resulting differences in the intensity of the influence of religiosity or secularity on the formation of societal values of students in the two educational sectors.
