Slope stabilization is the one of important fundamental aspect for preventing landslides. For a safer design of the structure, slope stabilization is very important. There are various studies conducted on slope stabilization and landslide mitigation. Geotechnical Engineers and Structural Engineers play an important role in analyzing and designing slope stabilization and landslide mitigation and prevention. This study is also helpful for the design of slopes. The study also helps for quick assessment of slopes. This paper also explained stabilization methods and techniques for slope. This study is also helpful in improving the shear strength of the slope of soil. This paper helps to understand basic knowledge on slope stabilization and landslides for every Engineer easily.

Slides in soft marine clays frequently occur during construction of road embankments in Norway. This paper outlines the routine procedure used for a stability analysis of such embankments, based on a total stress concept. Using these procedures, eight slides were investigated, and it was found that the minimum factor of safety obtained could give a too conservative picture of the actual conditions. The minimum factor of safety, which is the one normally used, varied between 0.73 and 1.10. Taking all uncertainties into consideration, an analysis based on a total stress concept as outlined herein must be considered acceptable. The study gives no basis for evaluating the accuracy of the measured shear strength values.

Synopsis Deutsche Bahn AG (Deutsche Bahn hereafter) was the former German railroad monopolist until deregulation in 1996. It was a well-known company that operated in worldwide markets for transport and logistics at the time of the case (late 2013). The case “Deutsche Bahn AG: a former monopoly off track?” focuses on the opportunities and challenges faced by Deutsche Bahn with regard to its position in the German individual transportation market. On the one hand, Deutsche Bahn is facing external problems. Increasing competition in short- and long-distance traffic threatens its strong business position. The competition emerged from a growing long-distance bus market and the increase in private railway companies. During the last few years before 2013, Deutsche Bahn has lost several public tenders for individual passenger travel in Germany. On the other hand, Deutsche Bahn has internal problems that endanger its image as a service company. A lack of service quality and the technical condition of its trains has led to rising numbers of customer complaints. In addition, staffing and punctuality problems have exacerbated the situation. One of the main technical issues the company faces is that ordered trains have not been delivered on time. Given the focus on Deutsche Bahn’s domestic challenges, its international business activities are tackled only briefly. While regulatory and political events have an impact on Deutsche Bahn, these are not the main subjects of the case. Research methodology This case has been written from public sources. Consequently, no company release is provided. None of the information has been disguised in any way. Relevant courses and levels The case is intended for use in a 90-minute strategic management class attended by students at the end of their undergraduate studies or in postgraduate study. Although the case relates to issues in strategic management, the special regulatory environment and some of the issues covered could make the case a useful complement in other classes as well, such as classes in supply chain management (procurement) or the management of public companies. Therefore, students should have basic knowledge in developing strategies, management, marketing, human resource management, and finance. Abstract Purpose To show for which publication-citation arrays h-type indices are equal and to reconsider rational h-type indices. Results for these research questions fill some gaps in existing basic knowledge about h-type indices. Design/methodology/approach The results and introduction of new indicators are based on well-known definitions. Findings The research purpose has been reached: answers to the first questions are obtained and new indicators are defined. Research limitations h-type indices do not meet the Bouyssou-Marchant independence requirement. Practical implications On the one hand, more insight has been obtained for well-known indices such as the h- and the g-index and on the other hand, simple extensions of existing indicators have been added to the bibliometric toolbox. Relative rational h-type indices are more useful for individuals than the existing absolute ones. Originality/value Answers to basic questions such as “when are the values of two h-type indices equal” are provided. A new rational h-index is introduced.

The use of ultraviolet radiation (UV) technology for the crosslinking of acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) is the one of various crosslinking methods, being the alternative to the conventional crosslinking process of solvent-based acrylic systems. It also requires a photoinitiator to absorb the impinging UV and induce photocrosslinking. As previously mentioned, a photoinitiator is one of the important and necessary components in UV-inducted crosslinking of acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives. The activity of multifunctional conventional saturated photoinitiators of type I and type II, especially benzophenone-based in the photoreactive UV-crosslinkable acrylic PSA was described. The effect of the multifunctional type-II photoinitiators on the acrylic PSA, such as tack, peel adhesion and shear strength were summarized.

A rapid repair and retrofitting technique for reinforced concrete (rc) Chinese existing bridges damaged by a strong earthquake, is proposed and tested. These bridges were designed according to Chinese codes [1] [2] [3] but with insufficient transversal steel reinforcement. The damaged rebar and concrete parts were replaced by new bar systems and concrete cast respectively. Finally, a C-FRP wrapping was applied to increase the insufficient shear strength and to guarantee the necessary ductility in plastic hinge. This repair technique is an upgrade of the one tested with very good results during a previous experimental research [4] on bridge designed according to old Italian code [5] without proper seismic details. A new bar system assures that plastic dissipation is distributed in plastic hinge only. Some pier specimens (in scale 1:6) were built with and without the new bar systems. These specimens were tested by cyclic tests at Fuzhou University lab (China) to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention.

AbstractIbn Raḥīq is an 11th century scholar who compiled a book on popular astronomy. This work included a section in which he summarizes basic knowledge of the Milky Way as it was wide spread in the first centuries after the hejira. Ibn Raḥīq gives a comprehensive overview of the perception of the Milky Way that reaches from its use as a test for knowledge of the religious tradition and for agricultural purposes on the one hand to an exact astronomical description of its shape in the sky during the year and to theories of its nature and composition on the other hand. We use a comparison of his text to those of Ibn al-Haytham and others to investigate the role the Milky Way played in early Islamic civilization from its beginning until the 15th century.

This report discusses the one-dimensional freezing of dry snow/ wet snow systems for the condition first examined by Stefan: the problem of heat conduction with phase change. There are two systems of internal freezing: one is a closed system of temperature rise in a dry snow layer sandwiched between upper and lower wet snow layers; the other an open system of freezing of a thin wet layer provoked mainly by an upper dry snow layer facing the atmosphere at its surface. The latter negatively concerns the release of some avalanches, because the weak layers of surface avalanches in districts where the melt-freeze metamorphism prevails (as in the Horuriku district of Japan) may be the thin wet granular snow layers.Numerical results are given for different conditions of internal freezing. A comparison with field observations reveals the fundamental aspect of this phenomenon and the possibility of avalanche release.

Abstract A fundamental aspect of the study of N−electronic systems (systems containing N electrons) is to obtain information on the states in which these systems have minimal energy. In practice a numerical search of such states is impossible to carry out, so that alternative approaches have been developped, the one around which this work revolves being to consider electronic systems through their electronic density rather than their state. This approach, known today as Density Functional Theory (DFT), was formalised in Kohn and Sham’s seminal article [1] and its mathematical aspects were studied a few years later by Lieb [2]. Since then, the ideas leading to the construction of DFT have been adapted to the context of electronic systems with a fractionnal number of electrons (open systems), first through PPLB DFT[3] and more recently through the definition of N−centered DFT[4, 5]. In both cases it is unclear wherether the mathematical properties established for classical DFT can be expected to hold true. This question is the main problematic of our work, in which we shall study the analogy between N−centered and classical DFT, from their construction to the methods that are derived from them. This will lead us to construct a Kohn-Sham scheme for N−centered DFT, investigate the links between this theory and optimal transport and present the Hubbard Dimer in this particular situation.
