Aims: To determine rubella sero-prevalence (IgG, IgM) and to describe its relation to socio-demographic data among pregnant women in a tertiary institution in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state, South-South, Nigeria. Study Design:  This was a descriptive cross sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Federal Medical Centre in Yenegoa, Bayelsa State, in South-South Nigeria between May 2020 and August 2020. Methodology: We included 398 women at various stages of pregnancy. An interviewer administered questionnaire was used to obtain socio demographic data. Ten ml of venous blood was then collected for serological assays.  Analyses of samples were done using an in-vitro on-site rubella IgG/IgM rapid diagnostic assay. P value were kept at 0.05. Results: A total of 209 (53.0%) of the 398 women had a positive IgG antibodies. None (0.0%) of the women had positive IgM antibodies. There were no significant associations between respondents socio-demographic characteristics and rubella immunity as the probability values observed were greater than 0.05 (p>0.05). Conclusion: Our study shows a moderately high sero-prevalence of IgG antibodies amongst the participants studied. This indicates that rubella infection is endemic in Nigeria and requires further surveillance and control.

The aim is to assess how aware the dental students are about endodontic irrigants and the deleterious effect. Successful root canal therapy relies on the combination of proper instrumentation, irrigation, and obturation of the root canal. Of these three essential steps of root canal therapy, irrigation protocol is very important as it determines the healing of the periapical tissues. The primary endodontic treatment goal must thus be to optimize root canal disinfection and to prevent reinfection. Cytotoxicity of root canal irrigants is essential due to their close contact with host tissues. The study aimed to assess how aware the dental students are about the deleterious effects of endodontic irrigants. A cross-sectional study was conducted among dental students in January 2020. The survey was made on the app survey planet and a questionnaire was administered to 100 dental students about their awareness of cytotoxicity of irrigants in endodontics. The data was collected and put into bar charts in SPSS version 20 by IBM for statistical results. It is observed 38% were interns, 33% were final years and 29% were third years. 90% were aware of what irrigants are, 86% were aware of the types of irrigants, 76% were aware of the cytotoxicity of irrigants, 49% used sodium hypochlorite, 21% used chlorhexidine, 10% used MTAD, 8% used citric acid and 12% have used all of the above. 65% are aware of the duration of irrigants in canals. 59% think irrigants can be used in a previously treated tooth, 20% disagree and 21% are not sure. A p-value of 0.000 was obtained which is statistically significant as p<0.05. In vitro cytotoxicity tests are usually carried out for new materials before applying them clinically. These irrigating solutions should be used at lower concentrations to enhance cell viability and protect the tissues from toxicity damage, irrespective of their increased efficacy at higher concentrations. Through this study, it was evident that students are not fully aware of the deleterious effects of endodontic irrigants though they are used daily. The awareness of the concentration and type of irrigant to be used should be more emphasized during theory classes so that the same can be followed during clinical procedures.

Abstract Background: Infertility is an important health problem affecting the quality of life accompanied by significant emotional and psychological consequences. Infertile couples living with emotional disturbances face challenges with less success of infertility treatment. Purposes: This study aimed to investigate the quality of life of infertile couples who seek In-Vitro Fertilizations (IVFs) by gender in Gaza city, Palestinian. Methods and materials: A cross sectional study was conducted, from Feb 2018 to Nov 2018, among 383 infertile couples selected through convenient sampling. A valid and reliable Arabic version of the fertility quality of life questionnaire (FertiQoL) was used in data collection. One way ANOVA and independent t-test was applied to compare between males and females. P value less than 0.05% was considered statistical significance. Results: The mean age of males and females was 34.54±8.54 and 29.28±6.71 years respectively. More than half of them had university degree (64% and 60% respectively). The mean duration of infertility of couples was 5.66±3.54 years. The mean males' scores of FertiQoL and its subscales (emotion, mind/body, social, core, tolerability and treatment) were significantly higher than females' scores (p<0.05). Conclusion: The males' total scores of FertiQoL and its subscales were higher than females' scores. The mean total of FertiQoL increased with better education, however, decreased with increase of age, duration of marriage, duration of infertility and number of IVF attempts. Psychological assessment and Counseling are necessary for infertile women taking into considerations factors affecting their QoL.

Background: Implantation failure is determined when transferred embryos fail to implant following in vitro fertilization (IVF). In recent years, many studies suggest that implantation failure could be related to several genetic factors. In the current study, authors aimed to investigate the association of PKP3 rs10902158 (G>A) polymorphisms with the risk of implantation failure after ICSI treatment. Methods: 97 women, who underwent ICSI treatment owing to male factor infertility, were prospectively recruited in this cross-sectional study. Genomic DNA was prepared from peripheral blood samples in order to analyze the polymorphism (rs10902158) at the PKP3 gene by PCR-RFLP. The Results were presented as a genotype (GG, GA, and AA), and their relationship to IVF outcome was analyzed. Results: The patients were divided into two groups according to clinical pregnancy: the pregnant group included 51 patients (53%) and the non-pregnant group included 46 patients (47%). The clinical pregnancy outcome was significantly different between genotypes, which was 0%, 45.8% and 58.8% in the patients having the genotype AA, GA and GG respectively (p-value = 0.03).Conclusions: The presence of the allele A of the PKP3 SNP rs10902158 is associated with a reduced clinical pregnancy outcome in the patients undergoing ICSI treatment and may be helpful predictor for implantation failure.

Introduction: Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) children were shown to have higher neurological and musculoskeletal disorder. However, limited number of studies found concerning oral condition of ART children. This research aimed to determine oral condition between ART children and Natural Conceived (NC) children. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study consisted of 34 subjects, 17 ART children and 17 NC children. Intraoral examination and orthopantomogram (OPG) radiograph were done in these subjects. Any abnormalities of tooth development such as number and tooth structure was recorded. Caries experience of both groups were recorded using decayed, missing, filled tooth (dmft) index. Descriptive analysis and Mann-Whitney’s Test were used. Results: Most of the participants were female (58.8%) and majority aged 7 to 8 years old (47.1%). Of the patients, 70.6% of ART group were from intra-uterine insemination (IUI) technique while 29.4% were from in-vitro fertilization (IVF). One hypodontia case were found in each group. Caries experience in primary teeth were significantly lower in the ART group compared the NC group, with p value of 0.003. Conclusion: Children in ART group experience less dental caries in the primary teeth compared with NC children. However, there was a comparable case of tooth developmental defect in both groups.

Background: Infertility is a worldwide public health problem and affects psychological aspects of males’ and females’ life. However,  the problem has not been well investigated in Palestine. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine prevalence and predictors of depression among infertile men in the Gaza strip. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among three hundred eighty five infertile males from January to December 2019. Participants were selected from three main in-vitro fertilization (IVF) centers following simple random sampling. The Arabic version of Beck Depression Inventory was used. Descriptive and inferential analyses were performed using the SPSS V22. Binary analysis was done to determine independent variables and t-test and one-way ANOVA were conducted afterwards. Logistic regression was performed to determine independent factors associated with depression symptoms. The p-value of 0.05 or less was considered statistically significant. Results: Findings showed that 42.6% (164/385) of infertile men had at least one type of depression. Severe depression was presented in 16.6% (64/164) of participants, while 13.2% (51/164) and 12.7% (49/164) showed moderate and mild depression, respectively. Predictors for depression were duration of marriage (>8 years) (CI 95%: 1.099-2.615) and at least one IVF attempt (CI 95%: 0.373-0.873). Conclusion: It has been revealed that depression is prevalent among infertile men. Marriage of long duration and several failures in IVF attempts are predictors for depressions. Psychological counseling besides medical interventions seems to be an optimal strategy to alleviate psychological distress associated with infertility.

SummaryThe immediate postoperative biomechanical properties of an “underand-over” cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) replacement technique consisting of fascia lata and the lateral onethird of the patellar ligament, were compared with that of a modified intra- and extracapsular “under-and-over-the-top” (UOTT) method. The right CCL in twelve adult dogs was dissected out and replaced with an autograft. The contralateral, intact CCL served as the control. In group A, the graft was secured to the lateral femoral condyle with a spiked washer and screw. In group B the intracapsular graft was secured to the lateral femoro-fabellar ligament, and the remainder to the patellar tendon. Both CCL replacement techniques exhibited a 2.0 ± 0.5 mm anterior drawer immediately after the operation. After skeletonization of the stifles, the length and cross-sectional area of the intact CCL and CCL substitutes were determined. Each bone-ligament unit was tested in linear tension to failure at a fixed distraction rate of 15 mm/s with the stifle in 120° flexion. Data was processed to obtain the corresponding material parameters (modulus, stress and strain in the linear loading region, and energy absorption to maximum load). The immediate postoperative structural and material properties of the “under-and-over” cranial cruciate ligament replacement technique with autogenous fascia lata, were compared to that of a modified intra- and extracapsular “under-and-over-the-top” (UOTT) method. The combined UOT T technique was slightly stronger (6%), but allowed 2.8 ± 0.9 mm more cranial tibial displacement at maximum linear force.
