Poa maroccana is an annual Mediterranean species, which is recorded for the first time from Sicily and for the whole Italian territory. It usually occurs in synanthopic habitats, represented mainly by urban and suburban roadsides, where it is quite sporadic. Based on current knowledge, it has been hitherto reported only in a few localities of the Mediterranean area, particularly in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Syria and Crimea. Field observations and herbarium investigations have shown that this species is often mistaken for P. annua, mainly due to its morphological similarities, as well as for the same ecological needs, therefore its real geographical distribution has yet to be verified. Although the two species are both tetraploids (2n = 28), they clearly differ for numerous relevant features concerning the shape and size of ligules, inflorescence, spikelet, glumes, palea, lemma, anthers, lodicules and seed. In order to better clarify the relationships of P. maroccana with P. annua and the other annual species of this genus occurring in the Mediterranean, its carefull a morphological description and iconography is provided, as well as a comparative morphological table of all allied species and also their analytical key for easy identification.

AbstractThe first record of the ophiuroid family Ophiohelidae from the Mediterranean Sea is reported. It consists of the description of the new record of Ophiomyces grandis from the Mallorca Channel seamounts in the Balearic Islands, western Mediterranean, where it shows high abundances. We present both the morphological description of the individuals collected and, for the first time, the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) sequence of this species. The morphological traits of our specimens match the available descriptions of O. grandis. On the other hand, molecular analyses show a large genetic distance between O. grandis and Ophiomyces delata, the two species being very similar morphologically. Despite the high abundances of O. grandis reported here, previous surveys in the Mallorca Channel seamounts using ROV did not detect it, emphasizing the importance of beam trawl sampling to improving the biodiversity description of these geomorphological sea bottom features.

The stromatic ascomycete Camarops petersii was recorded for the first time in Eastern Europe. It was found growing on Quercus robur wood, on a fallen trunk of a lightning stuck tree in Bryansk Oblast, next to the western border of Russia. The morphological description, data on the distribution and habitat are provided. The modern distribution of C. petersii is confined mostly to the refugia of tertiary relict floras. All known European populations of Camarops petersii (including our own) are from north of the Alps, possibly established relatively recently due to post-glacial colonization of the broadleaf forests. Future C. petersii populations may be found in the Mediterranean area and the Caucasus.

The corticioid basidiomycete Jaapia ochroleuca (Bres.) Nannf. et J. Erikss. is recorded for the first time in the European Russia from the «Bryansky Les» Nature Reserve (Bryansk Region). The taxonomic position of the species is defined briefly. Its morphological description and data on distribution and ecology are provided. The details of microscopic structure of the collected specimen are illustrated.

Specimens of the sipunculan worm Phascolion (Phascolion) caupo Hendrix, 1975 have been collected for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea, thus increasing the number of known sipunculan species of up to 36 in this area. They were encountered on soft bottoms from the coast of San Pedro del Pinatar (Western Mediterranean). Thirty specimens were collected at a depth ranging from 32.6 to 37.2 m, mainly in sandy substrata with high load of silt and clays. 80% of the individuals were found inhabiting empty shells of gastropods or empty tubes of serpulid polychaetes.

Naso vlamingii (Valenciennes, 1835) is reported from Korea for the first time and a morphological description is provided. A single specimen of N. vlamingii was collected from the southeastern coast of Jeju Island, Korea in September 2017. This species is characterized by the presence of 2 bony plates on the middle of the caudal peduncle, 6 dorsal and 2 anal fin spines, and a rounded, convex, swollen snout. This species is the fifth species of the genus Naso Lacepède, 1801 in the Korean fish fauna, and the newly proposed Korean name for the species is “Keun-ko-pyo-mun-jwi-chi”.

We report two new forms of cirolanid isopods ascribed to <em>Palaega</em> sp. and <em>P. steatopigia</em> n. sp. (Cirolanidae) from the Middle Pliocene of Campore (Salsomaggiore Terme, Parma) and Monticelli di Quattro Castella (Reggio Emilia), Emilia Romagna, N Italy. This is the first record of <em>Palaega</em> Woodward, 1870, reported from the Middle Pliocene of Emilia Romagna and in the paleo-Adriatic Gulf. <em>Palaega</em> <em>steatopigia</em> n. sp. represents the third species described in Italy and in the Mediterranean area

A pinnotheroid pea crab (Pinnotheridae De Haan, 1833), is here reported from the Zanclean (early Pliocene) clays of a quarry located S-SW of Cassine (Alessandria, Piemonte, NW Italy). Though the studied specimen cannot be assigned to any genus within the Pinnotherinae (Pinnotheridae De Haan, 1833), it is the first record from the Pliocene of Italy and paleo-Adriatic Gulf, increasing the knowledge of the presence and fossil distribution of this family in the Mediterranean area.

Extensive documentation is available on plant essential oils as a potential source of antimicrobials, including natural drugs against Candida spp. Yeasts of the genus Candida are responsible for various clinical manifestations, from mucocutaneous overgrowth to bloodstream infections, whose incidence and mortality rates are increasing because of the expanding population of immunocompromised patients. In the last decade, although C. albicans is still regarded as the most common species, epidemiological data reveal that the global distribution of Candida spp. has changed, and non-albicans species of Candida are being increasingly isolated worldwide. The present study aimed to review the anti-Candida activity of essential oils collected from 100 species of the Lamiaceae family growing in the Mediterranean area and the Middle East. An overview is given on the most promising essential oils and constituents inhibiting Candida spp. growth, with a particular focus for those natural products able to reduce the expression of virulence factors, such as yeast-hyphal transition and biofilm formation. Based on current knowledge on members of the Lamiaceae family, future recommendations to strengthen the value of these essential oils as antimicrobial agents include pathogen selection, with an extension towards the new emerging Candida spp. and toxicological screening, as it cannot be taken for granted that plant-derived products are void of potential toxic and/or carcinogenic properties.

We present new data on the poorly known rodent Prionomys batesi Dollman, 1910. Recently, five specimens of this species were collected in Odzala National Park, which represent the first record of this species in Republic of Congo. These new captures, combined with the preparation of 15 specimens from Central African Republic allowed us to complete the morphological description of the species as well as, for the first time, to document intraspecific variability. This species is actually known from three countries (Cameroon, Central African Republic and Republic of Congo) and four localities (Bitye, Obala, La Maboké and Odzala). It seems to be restricted to areas of forest-savannah mosaic where the forest is actually colonising the savannah.

Iris setosa is one of the widespread Iris species in Northeast Asia and North America. In 2018, it was found for the first time in Europe, on Kildin Island (Murmansk Oblast, Russian Federation). The presence of this plant on the island and its disjunct range are discussed. To facilitate further detection and identification, a general morphological description, information about the original material of the name I. setosa, and supporting illustrations are here provided.
