The avian nasal mites are a group of Mesostigmata, belonging to the family Rhinonyssidae, Trouessart, 1895, obligate endoparasites of the respiratory system of birds. In Brazil, seven of the eight genera of this family have been recorded. After examining the Acarological Collection of the Instituto Butantan, the species Rallinyssus gallinulae Fain, 1960 and Rhinoecius bisetosus Strandtmann, 1952 were identified from Gallinula galeata (Lichtenstein, 1818) (Gruiformes: Rallidae) and an unidentified owl, respectively. In this study, we are recording for the first time R. gallinulae from Brazil (Rio de Janeiro State), while R. bisetosus is recorded for the second time to this country (São Paulo State), however from a different specific locality.

Two new species of Neomarica (Trimezieae, Iridoideae, Iridaceae) from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, Southeast Brazil, are described and illustrated: Neomarica mauroi, endemic to the municipality of Mangaratiba, Rio de Janeiro State; and Neomarica sancti-vicentei, endemic to the municipality of São Vicente, São Paulo State.

Collecting expeditions carried out in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro states have led to the rediscovery of Adenocalymma bullatum, known previously only by three collections made 70 years ago.New records of Adenocalymma bullatum from São Paulo and A. cinereum from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are reported. In addition, A. macrophyllum is rediscovered in Rio de Janeiro State after the type collections made 180 years ago by Friedrich Sellow. In this paper, we provide descriptions, comments on the affinities among closely related species, and conservation assessments, as well as illustrations.

We provide a list of the Pimplinae from the Estação Ecológica dos Caetetus, São Paulo state, Brazil. A total of 286 specimens belonging to 17 species in 10 genera were collected from December 2002 to May 2004. Pimpla and Neotheronia were the most abundant genera with 45% and 10% specimens respectively. Fourteen species of Pimplinae were recorded for the first time from São Paulo state and 3 of them, Neotheronia charli, N. cherfasi and N. lizzae, were recorded for the first time from Brazil. We also provide diagnosis and images of the species.

ABSTRACT This survey presents the first species list of the poroid fungi (Polyporales and related genera) from Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar, Núcleo Santa Virgínia, the largest area of the Atlantic forest in Brazil. A total of 68 species, 38 genera and ten families were found in the studied area. Antrodiella luteocontexta, Ceriporiopsis flavilutea, Diplomitoporus navisporus, Flaviporus venustus, Grammothele fuligo, Oxyporus latemarginatus, Perenniporia cremeopora, Postia subcaesia and Postia tephroleuca are recorded for the first time to São Paulo State and Dichomitus campestris and Postia undosa represent the first records in Brazil. Full description of the new records in Brazil, comments about the new records in São Paulo State, as well as pictures and an identification key are provided.

 This report provides the new record of the sponge Radiospongilla inesi and the slug Omalonyx matheroni for the Vale do Paraiba, State of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil, besides the symbiosis among R. inesi and individuals of some benthic macroinvertebrates. Monthly collections were carried out in the Ribeirão dos Mottas, with a 0.5 cm sieve in the edge vegetation, as well as collections by hand. Three specimens of R. inesi were found, from a lotic environment under pebbles. In addition, individuals of four insect families, Sisyridae, Hydropsychidae, Chironomidae e Simuliidae, were found on the sponge aquiferous system. Six individuals of the semi-aquatic slug O. matheroni were also caught under rocks and cans. Despite the sponges are commonly found in the most of the environments, the freshwater species represents one of the most unknown animal groups of the world.  R. inesi was report at first time in Brazil in Pernambuco State, northeastern Brazil region, and this report represents just the second record of this species in Brazil, and the first time to the southeastern region. The presence of individuals of four insect families pointing out the importance of R. inesi on the life history of these animals. Despite some records of Omalonix sp. to the São Paulo State, this report seems to be the first record of the O. matheroni to the Vale do Paraíba, northern of the São Paulo State.

The genus Echinoporia is characterized by the presence of chlamydospores originating from hairs in the pileus and margin, or the dissepiment edges. Two species of Echinoporia are found in America, i.e., E. aculeifera and E. inermis. In a study of Neotropical polypores, several specimens of Echinoporia were collected in the Atlantic rainforest, São Paulo state. Echinoporia inermis is recorded for the second time in Brazil. Echinoporia aculeifera is recorded for the first time in São Paulo state. A distribution map of the genus in the Neotropics is presented.

Passiflora L. belongs to the family Passifloraceaesensu stricto, and comprises 700–750 species. There are approximately 161 known species of the family in Brazil, of which 153 belong to Passiflora, 89 are endemic, 83 occur in the region of the Atlantic Domain; 40 occur in Rio de Janeiro State (RJ). Using field samplings techniques and scientific collection analyses, we present here new geographic records for Passiflora deidamioides Harms, P. imbeana Sacco, P. junqueirae Imig & Cervi, and P. truncata Regel for RJ, principally in the Serra dos Órgãos National Park (PARNASO). Geographic distribution data was used to calculate the Extension of Occurrence (EOO) and Area of Occupancy (AOO) of the species. Passiflora junqueirae, previously considered endemic to Espírito Santo State, now has new records for RJ. Passiflora imbeana and P. truncata are extended into RJ, being recorded there for the first time in the municipality of Teresópolis. The four species are cited for the first time in PARNASO, occurring between 1,000 and 1,700 m.a.s.l. in Montane and Upper Montane Atlantic Rainforest. We provide taxonomic information, distribution maps, and the conservation status of the species.

Sodreaninae is reviewed and all ten species are combined under its type genus, Sodreana Mello-Leitão, 1922, according to a cladistic analysis of morphological characters, which revealed a pectinate pattern of clades. The subfamily is endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest from Santa Catarina state to Rio de Janeiro state. Sodreana is herein considered a senior synonym of Stygnobates Mello-Leitão, 1927, Zortalia Mello-Leitão, 1936, Gertia B. Soares & H. Soares, 1946 and Annampheres H. Soares, 1979. The following new combinations are proposed: Sodreana barbiellinii (Mello-Leitão, 1927), Sodreana hatschbachi (B. Soares & H. Soares, 1946), Sodreana inscripta (Mello-Leitão, 1939), Sodreana leprevosti (B. Soares & H. Soares, 1947b), Sodreana bicalcarata (Mello-Leitão, 1936). Sodreana granulata (Mello-Leitão, 1937) is revalidated from the synonymy of Sodreana sodreana Mello-Leitão, 1922. Three new species are described: Sodreana glaucoi from Ilhabela and Boraceia, São Paulo state; S. curupira from Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos, Rio de Janeiro state, and S. caipora from Ubatuba, São Paulo state. Sodreaninae species are restricted to forested areas and most occur in the southern part of the coastal Atlantic rainforest, one species occurs in interior Atlantic rainforest. The biogeographical analysis (Brooks Parsimony Analysis) resulted in a single and fully resolved most parsimonious tree with three main: components: northern (Bahia and Serra do Espinhaço), southern (Santa Catarina, Paraná, Serra do Mar of São Paulo), and central (Espírito Santo, Serra da Bocaina, southern state of Rio de Janeiro, Serra dos Órgãos, Serra da Mantiqueira, Serra do Mar of São Paulo).

Two Neotropical species, one of them divided into two subspecies, are currently ascribed to the genus Dinocrytops Crabill, 1953, and are revised here. Dinocryptops puruensis (Bücherl, 1941) and D. miersii guaraniticus (Coscarón, 1955) are synonymized with Dinocryptops miersii (Newport, 1845). A specimen from São Paulo State, Southeastern Brazil, is designated as neotype for D. miersii (Newport, 1845). Dinocryptops miersii is recorded for the first time for the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Distrito Federal, and Santa Catarina.
