Skylight polarization pattern is used as an important navigation clue for desert ant and bees. The paper will present a new solar direction extracting method based on the polarization degree measurement. Two kinds of solar direction calculation model will be derived, one is by the polarization degree measurement of two observation directions, the other one is by the polarization degree and polarization E-vector direction measurement of the same observation direction.

Polarized light (PL) sensitivity is relatively well studied in a large number of invertebrates and some fish species, but in most other vertebrate classes, including birds, the behavioural and physiological mechanism of PL sensitivity remains one of the big mysteries in sensory biology. Many organisms use the skylight polarization pattern as part of a sun compass for orientation, navigation and in spatial orientation tasks. In birds, the available evidence for an involvement of the skylight polarization pattern in sun-compass orientation is very weak. Instead, cue-conflict and cue-calibration experiments have shown that the skylight polarization pattern near the horizon at sunrise and sunset provides birds with a seasonally and latitudinally independent compass calibration reference. Despite convincing evidence that birds use PL cues for orientation, direct experimental evidence for PL sensitivity is still lacking. Avian double cones have been proposed as putative PL receptors, but detailed anatomical and physiological evidence will be needed to conclusively describe the avian PL receptor. Intriguing parallels between the functional and physiological properties of PL reception and light-dependent magnetoreception could point to a common receptor system.

Researchers have found that some animals can use the skylight polarization pattern for navigation. It is also expected to use the skylight polarization pattern for human navigating in the near future. However, the challenge is that the need for a more accurate and efficient model of the imaging of skylight polarization is always felt. In this paper, three improved models of imaging of skylight polarization are proposed. The proposed models utilize the analysis of the distribution of the skylight polarization pattern after the polarization imaging system. Given that the skylight polarization pattern after the polarization imaging system is distorted, the focus of this paper is on the degree of distortion of the skylight polarization pattern in these imaging models. Experiments in clear weather conditions demonstrate that the proposed model operates close to the actual acquired skylight polarization pattern.
