The Planned and Materialized Implementation of an Information System

The object of this case study is a marketing and sales information system in two local offices of a regional telephone company. A unified, advanced client/server system was needed due to the merging of three companies into a bigger regional company, keener competition, and the growing complexity of the services provided. The system is tailormade to meet the needs of the industry and it was developed by a software vendor in close cooperation with the nationwide alliance of regional telephone companies. This study illustrates the difficulties in simultaneously aligning an organization and implementing a new information system. Views on the skills and competence needed in using the system vary, and lead to the negligence of education and training. The consequent lack of skills and knowledge of some users, especially of those not using the system regularly, create profound problems in the whole work process and in productivity as the first, obvious work practices become the dominant mode of operation bypassing the desired integrated workflow. The findings are discussed and reflected to concepts of institutionalization, positive reinforcement, and productivity paradox. This case emphasizes the importance of the organizational implementation and adaptation process which ought to begin after the implementation of the technical system.

<p><span>This paper introduces and proposes an approach in goal-oriented requirements elicitation process that using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), in information system enhancement process. KPIs can be used to control and reduce user requirements problems caused by personal interests of users in requirements elicitation process. An information system enhancement project for a distribution company has been used as a case study to demonstrate this approach. The case study shows that the requirements can be elicited from the organization goals and current information system condition rather than from user requirements. This approach also showed that KPIs have been able to control some user requirements that have difference point of view with high level stakeholder requirements. Compared with the previous research, IT goals and KPIs are more easily identified in the enhancement process rather than through development of a brand new information system.</span></p>

This paper presents a case study of how one academic library provides services and support for the Geographic Information System (GIS) needs of students and faculty. The case study involves an American university library that has provided GIS services to meet the needs of students and faculty while lacking the formal position of a dedicated GIS Librarian. The library’s variety of GIS-related support is described in the paper, and an overview of resources for librarians to develop their GIS skills is also shared. The paper offers insights and lessons learned about the level of services that can be offered by academic libraries in GIS-related research and training for students, faculty, and staff.

For the last two years, all Philippine educational institutions had to adapt flexible learning. All personnel and students underwent orientation and training to their institution’s Management Information System (MIS). These institutions are utilizing either MIS mandated by the Department of Education, subscribed to or created by the institution itself. Challenges and concerns have been noted on the use of these MIS worldwide. Hence, this study elucidated the experiences and challenges of admistrators, faculty and students with their existing MIS among public and private educational institutions in the Philippines. Using a qualitative comparative case study design, the researchers draw the experiences of the participants on their existing MIS. The findings of the study revealed three main themes on the experiences of the participants with their existing MIS: excellent way to systematize and organize, a work in progress and encompassing of all institutional services. On the resolution of concerns and challenges with their MIS, prevailing themes were: having an efficient and expert Information Technology (IT) team, continuous feedback and improvement, and unresolved due to poor internet connectivity. As to how these challenges affected their performance, themes clustered on: improved and more efficient, negatively affected output and efficiency, and unaffected. This study highlighted the importance of proper orientation and training of all personnel and students, for an effective MIS which must be managed by an expert IT team. Despite the challenges encountered, the use of the MIS led to the better performance of the participants’ duties and responsibilities.

This chapter addresses a problem that is often experienced when ICT systems are being implemented in a work practice. Posed as a question, it might be formulated like this: What does it take to replace an old functioning information system with a new one? Findings are grounded on a long-term case study at a community elder care. This chapter used the Development Work Research (DWR) approach that is an interventionist methodology comprising ethnography as well as design experiment. During the case study, a new digital case book for the community wound care was developed. However, as it turned out, the nurses´ established practice favored the old-fashioned mobile information system. First conclusion of this chapter is that an old-fashioned information system within health care work will not successfully be replaced by a new one, unless the new is better “as a whole”, that is, better supports work practices of a range of occupational and professional workers. Second conclusion is that when designing information system for the public sector, system designers will almost always face dilemmas based on a contradiction between central, high level interest and local level work-practice perspectives. The third conclusion is that in order to succeed in the design of new information and communication system, the distinctive features of the work activities in question have to be delineated by ethnographic studies, and taken into consideration in the design process.

In order to facility data of ex-graduate maintaining and career information distribution to all of member of STMIK Insan Pembangunan especially Information System, information system is made to handle that. It is an application that named Career Development Center. In processing that aplication, the writer do examination  by interview, observation and from books or literatures and then continue to model it with UML diagrams. Along with this system, it is hoped that recapitulaton of ex-graduate and career information spreading about job vacancy, tips and training/workshop can help user to maintain it.

Abstract—The need for information system development in a company is a basic requirement that must be met by each company in order to run its business processes properly. This is the basic key in a company in order to provide maximum results to find as many profits or profits. Application development or requirements in the application also provide speed for employees to carry out their activities to work properly and optimally. The development of the era requires that companies must be productive and have innovations so that the business wheel of the company can run well. This is based on the development of technology that is so fast that it requires special expertise in its application. This research is expected to be able to help some problems that exist in a company. Where its application can make it easier for employees to carry out their respective duties and roles in order to maximize their potential.
